Ohio State football: Nicol has learned to focus on team
Tight end accepts that he won't be piling up catches

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Every Friday, on the eve of a game, Ohio State offensive coordinator Jim Bollman mentions a favorite quote to his players: "He talks about, 'Forgetting yourself in the service to others,' " tight end Rory Nicol said. "Basically, he's saying to forget about yourself and do what's best for the team."
It's not easy to adopt that point of view. Like many young players, Nicol came into the program hoping to play a starring role, which in his mind meant catching passes and scoring touchdowns.
That hasn't happened at Ohio State in recent years. Not since 2003, when Ben Hartsock had 33 catches, has a Buckeyes tight end been heavily involved as a receiver.
Since then, the high-water mark for an Ohio State tight end is 16 catches. This season, the tight ends have caught 10 passes -- six by Nicol and four by Jake Ballard.
With one game remaining in his career, Nicol has 38 receptions in 46 games.
At some point toward the tail end of his five years in Columbus, Nicol realized that if he wasn't going to beat the system, he might as well join it.

There were 20 Buckeyes on hand for Pro Day, with 29 NFL teams represented - everyone but Denver, Kansas City and Oakland. Tight end Rory Nicol had a pulled hamstring and didn't work out, but the other 19 went through the drills.
Nicol gets a shot
Tight end Rory Nicol will try out with the Washington Redskins this weekend in hopes of signing a free-agent contract.
Nicol likely would have already signed a deal, but he was hampered by a hamstring injury he suffered while working out this winter, and it was not recovered in time for him to participate in OSU's pro day March 13.
That really hurt him. But now, he gets a chance to impress. That's all you can ask for.

The Washington Redskins are giving former Ohio State tight end Rory Nicol a chance to play pro football.
Nicol is a graduate of Beaver High School.
Shelly Poe, the Ohio State sports information director, said that Nicol has been invited by the Redskins to take part in a tryout this weekend.
The Redskins hold their mini-camp on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
If Nicol impresses the Redskins, he may be asked to sign a contract as an undrafted free agent.
That is cool.....but the bride is his assistant. That is so cool that coach would attend the wedding of a former Buckeye he never even coached. Congrats Rory!
