TE Gee Scott Jr. (Official Thread)

ON AND OFF THE FIELD, OHIO STATE TIGHT END GEE SCOTT FEELS HE'S “THE BEST VERSION OF HIMSELF”

Hardships are inevitable in life.

That’s one of the things that makes sports such a microcosm of the real world. Every person is going to experience times that are difficult, that seem unbearable, that feel impossible to push through.
It’s for that reason that Gee Scott Jr. felt he needed to ground himself in his faith and improve as a person holistically to become the best football player he could be.
“When you approach this game, there’s many hardships that you’re going to go through,” Scott said. “There’s difficulties you go through. Same with your day job, I’m sure there’s days you come in there and don’t want to (work) — things can be frustrating. When you’re in alignment with your soul and yourself, I think you just have a better understanding of — when those hard days come — ‘I’m going through this and I understand it’s for a bigger purpose.’”
Entering his fourth season at Ohio State, Scott will attempt to bring that well-roundedness to the tight end position as a backup for Cade Stover.
“He’s the best version of himself right now,” Ryan Day said Monday. “He’s practicing well, he’s out there. Cade’s the starter, Cade has been solid in there. He’s had a really good camp. He’s someone that’s very, very important to our offense. But Gee’s really shown that we can trust him in certain things.”

This guy could definitely be a what if candidate. What if he puts it together and gets his blocking as good as his catching. We all knew it was going to take a few years before we saw a competent TE version of Scott. Last year he was still figuring it out, and also needed to mature. If he can put it together with Stover, and the WRs, whomever Day picks at QB will have a top 3 offense as far as skill positions go.

Freaking AWESOME!!

What an accomplishment!
I unabashedly love Gee Scott. Gee shows all of us what hard work and drive can do. Easily one of my favorite Buckeyes with how he's attacked learning the TE position, in addition to his academic exploits

Rooting really hard for him to tear it up on the field this season like he's been tearing it up in the classroom. Big opportunity for him to do big things this year tag-teaming with Cade

The bolded for sure. Gee is a very talented athlete, but the transition to TE was going to be lengthy from a body composition perspective and also just learning the position. There were moments last year it seemed to be coming together, but really this is the year I would expect/hope to see the adaptation. Apparently he is a senior, so it has gotta be this year I suppose, really rooting for him.

WITH GEE SCOTT JR.’S EVOLUTION, OHIO STATE IS RELYING MORE ON TWO-TIGHT-END SETS

Ohio State leaned heavily on two-tight end sets against Maryland.

Gee Scott Jr. played a career-high 37 of Ohio State’s 63 offensive snaps against the Terrapins, with most of those plays coming alongside or opposite top Buckeye tight end Cade Stover.

“Coach Day said it at the beginning of the season, this offense is trending toward having versatility,” tight ends coach Keenan Bailey said. “I think we played, what, 60 percent 12 personnel (two tight ends, one running back), not counting third downs and red zone but base down and distance. It’s just a credit to our guys.”

Scott’s evolution as a blocker in addition to his background as a receiver have given the Buckeyes a dependable option to toy with and create mismatches defensively.

“Just with our tight end room, we’ve got, really, three or four guys that can do really good things in the pass game, getting out and running routes, and then also guys that can go in there and block,” quarterback Kyle McCord said. “So I think that creates a mismatch. If they want to put a linebacker on them, I like that matchup, and then if they want to keep an extra DB on the field, we’ll do a good job running the ball.”

Scott’s been on an upward trajectory in 2023.

Agreed, agreed, and agreed. His family (mostly his dad) has been a fan favorite. Glad to see his perseverance, and that his hard work has paid off. Enjoy his play, and would like to see the two TE sets develop into some catches, rather than being additional blocking linemen. But that seems to be what the Buckeyes need. Stove has given the Buckeyes a lift, as the opponents DBs strain to cover our elite WRs, him slipping into an open spot provides McCord with an outlet for some nice gains. Scott also provides that opportunity if the OC opens it up. As good as the opponents DBs are, we got better receivers (and more) than they got DBs. Yeah, I get that a LB would cover the TE(s) doing a late release. Go Bucks!

“I think he's had a really good offseason, I think he's gonna have a really good spring, I think he's right where he needs to be,” Ryan Day said last week. “He’s had the right offseason, he's got the right approach. His leadership and just demeanor has been excellent, attitude’s been off the charts. I think he's poised to have a really good year. Has to go do it.”

Ohio State tight ends coach Keenan Bailey said Scott has emerged as a leader of his unit.

“I think he sets the tone for the unit,” Bailey said Tuesday. “He's been here for quite a while. He knows what it takes, right? So he sets the tone as far as details and preparation and effort and toughness. And everyone's got to follow.”

Now going into his fifth year as a Buckeye, Scott is the most veteran tight end on Ohio State’s roster. That said, the Buckeyes brought in another experienced tight end to compete for the starting job this offseason in Will Kacmarek, who played 935 snaps for the Ohio Bobcats over the past two seasons, per Pro Football Focus.

Jelani Thurman is also a candidate to earn a bigger role this season after redshirting as a true freshman, while Bennett Christian looks to earn his way into the tight end rotation as well after he was suspended for testing positive for a banned substance last season.

Day indicated last week, though, that Scott was a step ahead of the rest of Ohio State’s tight ends.

“I think Jelani, Will, Bennett, those guys are gonna have to really step up the next couple of weeks to figure out who's going to be able to play,” Day said. “But we got enough talent in the room. It's not like we look in the room and say ‘There's not enough guys, we gotta go find somebody in the portal.’ That's not the case. I think we've got to go develop them, but we’ll probably know more here again in a couple weeks.”

If one has a weak OL, then adding one or two TEs to the mix at least gives the QB time to develop the WR routes. So there's that. I very much enjoy (Buckeyes doing, not others), a opening smack on a DLman, then slipping into the D, for an 8-10 yard reception. Cade took that to an extreme, gaining 15-20 yards at a clip. I, too, have a soft spot for Gee. Voluntarily went from a WR to a TE, bulking up in the process, and having to block big guys, instead of a WR block on a play. Big difference. Plus, he's 'played the game' and not whined or wailed about not enough playing time, but has always been the #2 or #3 TE on the team. He's waited his turn, and I hope he makes the best of it. Another great Buckeye story.
