I've never been one of those people that thinks we get picked on in terms of national coverage. For one, I think ESPN is an internet troll writ large, and you should never take them seriously. For another, it's not like USC hasn't been getting hammered pretty hard in the media the last couple years after their scandal. And in 3 years, when Nick Saban "retires" amid a storm of potential NCAA violations, I'm sure Alabama will be hit pretty hard, too. That's what happens when you're a heavyweight and you drive the media needle.

But I am pretty alarmed at the relative lack of coverage of this thing. This is an actual thing. It's not NCAA benefit nonsense. A young woman was clearly wronged (I guess it's debatable to what degree she was wronged, but still, wronged, by multiple people on the football team.) And it doesn't seem debatable that the response by the football team and the university was and is completely unacceptable. This should be a bigger deal than it is.

Short of the victim, or whatever you want to call her, killing herself over the ordeal this is essentially Lizzy Seeberg 2.0.

We all remember just how sorry ND ended up being for their mishandling of that....oh wait.

Speaking for myself only, I'm not going to criminalize Gibbons over this article. I AM going to criminalize him for going to scUM though......

But that's just me.
Ok, I get it with the whole "Women are exploited blah, blah, blah" stuff. But let's get real. When a woman is assaulted who does it affect? Her, close family members and a couple of friends. And if she just sucks it up (no pun intended) she'll get over it sooner than you might think. Maybe it will affect her relationship with men for a while, but the right guy - a gentle namby-pamby type - can help her work things through. Getting a little weepy? Find something in the kitchen to keep you busy and you will be just fine.

Besides, how many women get to have sex with a football player even if they want to? And they all want to. Sure, he was just a kicker, but they still have to work out.

On the other hand, when a prestigious football program is involved in a scandal the impact is huge. It's mot just the player who might be suspended after his eligibility is through. But coaches, teammates and fans are harmed. Recruiting is impacted. Revenues dry up. Season ticket sales decline. Other than a bump in hits to ESPN.com the impact is entirely negative and can be felt for years.

And let's not forget the University Administration. These people have to be protected - it's not just about the football program.

What happened at UM and ND and perhaps FSU may seem troublesome to left wing women's libbers, but ladies with a more measured philosophy (Phyllis Schlafly and Ann Coulter come to mind) would understand and approve.
