Swine flu outbreak forces Texas officials to cancel competitions

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Texas officials postponed all public high school athletic and academic competitions on Wednesday until May 11 because of the swine flu outbreak.

The move suspends the baseball and softball seasons and eliminates the regional track championships that were to start Friday, said Charles Breithaupt, executive director of the University Interscholastic League. He said league officials acted on the recommendation of public health officials.

"The health and safety of our student activity participants is of the utmost importance," Breithaupt said. "Taking every possible precaution to prevent the further spreading of this disease is an important contribution to the welfare of our great state, and altering the schedule of our events is a way to keep our participants safe."

GENEVA - The World Health Organization has raised its pandemic alert for
swine flu to the second highest level, meaning that it believes a global
outbreak of the disease is imminent.

WHO says the phase 5 alert means there is sustained human to human
spread in at least two countries. It also signals that efforts to produce a
vaccine will be ramped up.

WHO has confirmed human cases of swine flu in Mexico, the United
States, Canada, Britain, Israel, New Zealand and Spain. Mexico and the
U.S. have reported deaths.

WHO Director-General Margaret Chan made the decision Wednesday to
raise the alert level from phase 4 - signifying transmission in only one
country - after reviewing the latest scientific evidence on the outbreak.

If the pace of the transmission of the H1N1 virus continues at its current
rate, the WHO could raise the threat level to phase 6, the highest level,
signifying that even large men and women with limited social skills could
conceivably participate in sexual trysts with the more attractive human
population, given the high stress and panic levels of a world wide pandemic
involving the collapse of the world economies, food distribution networks,
and health care. One such individual, Miss Emily Bodenheimer of Ann Arbor,
Michigan, spoke for many when she said, "There is a little silver lining in
everything...even the bad things. Maybe a boy will finally call me....or I
might meet a dead swine flu boy turned into a handsome vampire like in
Twilight...who'll appreciate a good girl that knows things, like how to
knit, not like the tattooed sluts on floor three... "

Well crafted. I look forward to the feature film, several sequals and/or HBO mini-series. Well, minus the ugly TSUN whore, or course.

Swine.com;

The world hog association today says that they are innocent of charges that they manfactured this illness.
They claim that it is a farce perpetrated by the Bovine association of America, along with the legal firm of Lolcats,Lolcats, and Bigpusy to undermine the production and use of pigs as a food staple.
The WHA plans to file legal briefs claiming discrimination against them by the above groups who they claim denied them equal access to food, defamed their character, and treated them as second class animals.

Maybe I can work this into an excuse to stay home tomorrow.

message FROM Joe Alutto and Larry Lewellen
The Ohio State University Medical Center is releasing the following statement this evening (4/29). We want to make sure you received this before it is released to the local news.

The Ohio State University Medical Center provided treatment to a patient who was diagnosed with probable swine influenza A (H1N1) virus, which is pending confirmation at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The patient is an employee of the Medical Center who contracted the virus outside the workplace. The patient responded well to treatment and is being discharged this evening.

OSU Medical Center staff followed all recommended precautions to prevent the spread of the illness to others. Individuals who had contact with the patient prior to admission are being notified. The Medical Center is providing prophylactic/preventive medication to those individuals, in accordance with standard CDC recommendations.

The Medical Center’s normal patient visitation schedule remains unchanged. The hospital continues to urge all visitors and staff to follow infection control steps including covering your mouth and nose if you have a cough or sneeze, and not visit patients if you are ill. Frequent use of waterless hand sanitizers is also recommended.

OSU Medical Center is working in collaboration with the CDC, Ohio Department of Health, and Columbus Public Health and following all appropriate guidelines.

For more information on swine influenza, go to CDC - Influenza (Flu) | Swine Influenza (Flu).

We will provide updates in the following days through e-mail and the university emergency web site Business and Finance :: default.
