World govts race to contain swine flu outbreak.

WASHINGTON ? The world's governments raced to avoid both a pandemic and global hysteria Sunday as more possible swine flu cases surfaced from Canada to New Zealand and the United States declared a public health emergency. "It's not a time to panic," the White House said.
Mexico, the outbreak's epicenter with up to 86 suspected deaths, canceled some church services and closed markets and restaurants. Few people ventured onto the streets, and some wore face masks. Canada became the third country to confirm cases, in six people, including some students who ? like some New York City spring-breakers ? got mildly ill in Mexico. Countries across Asia promised to quarantine feverish travelers returning from flu-affected areas.
The U.S. declared the health emergency so it could ship roughly 12 million doses of flu-fighting medications from a federal stockpile to states in case they eventually need them ? although, with 20 confirmed cases of people recovering easily, they don't appear to for now.
Make no mistake: There is not a global pandemic ? at least not yet. It's not clear how many people truly have this particular strain, or why all countries but Mexico are seeing mild disease. Nor is it clear if the new virus spreads easily, one milestone that distinguishes a bad flu from a global crisis. But waiting to take protective steps until after a pandemic is declared would be too late.

GENEVA ? Canada became the third country to confirm human cases of swine flu Sunday as global health officials considered whether to raise the global pandemic alert level.
Nations from New Zealand to Spain also reported suspected cases, and some warned citizens against travel to North America while others planned quarantines, tightened rules on pork imports and tested airline passengers for fevers.
The six Canadian cases in Nova Scotia and British Columbia all had links to people who had traveled to Mexico, and all are the same swine flu strain. The six people have recovered, said Dr. David Butler-Jones, Canada's chief public health officer.
But "these are probably not the last cases we'll see in Canada," he said.
The news follows the World Health Organization's decision Saturday to declare the outbreak first detected in Mexico and the United States a "public health emergency of international concern."

There's some bullshit going on. Yesterday and since the story broke, Mexico has claimed 80 or so cases of it. Now, according to CNN, there are 73 TOTAL cases worldwide with 40 coming from the U.S.

Sounds like Mexico's gonna try and pin this on us.

73 cases of swine flu confirmed; hundreds more feared - CNN.com
No BS - just the distinction between confirmed and suspected.

Expect the confirmed # to grow and (possibly) the tally as of today of "hundreds" suspected to shrink, unless new suspect cases are added.

For instance ...
Hundreds more cases are suspected, especially in Mexico, where as many as 103 deaths are thought to have been caused by the virus, the country's health minister said. More than 2,000 cases have been reported but not confirmed in the country.

All this talk about swine makes me want to eat a Carnitas burrito!!!

On another note, would it be surprising that an epidemic would start in Mexico? You can't even drink their water without spending 7 days on the porcelain.

Yeah, 'cause I sure trust Mexico to take an accurate count.

It's just strange that it went from 81 "suspected" cases to 20 confirmed. What the fuck did the other 61 die of? Regular Flu? That would still be pretty serious. I guess they all just died of natural causes.

I think border patrol agents should have pigs infected with the swine virus on leashes and train them to attack illegals as they are crossing the border. Who needs German Shepards when you can have infected swine on your side?
