No, it certainly doesn't these days. Do you really think the "n-word" carries the same connotation regardless of who uses it and how? There are virtually no words, especially taboo ones, that mean only one thing always. Usage is meaning.

From "my buddies" to "anyone with an African ethic background" to "African Americans who are from an poor, urban background who demonstrate a certain set of beliefs and/or behavior (i.e., a thug lifestyle) and generally identified with violence, high crime, high illegitimate birth rate/absent father and welfare upbringing generally associated with lower socio-economic conditions", it has more than one meaning to more than one speaker.

While I am not "endorsing" such a word or any of its usages, I can tell you with a high degree of certainty that the word is indeed not a universal. I have heard is used by blacks as a term of endearment and by blacks higher on the socio-economic scale to describe blacks who did not share their respect for education and "traditional values" path to success.

I have heard it morph into a slightly more refined version of prior racist usage, with whites now saying "I'm not talking about my black or African American friends and co-workers, but those n*****s who don't want to work."

While still disturbing, it is not anything like a singular meaning.

Face it , the only reason you refrain from swearing at times is because you are afraid of offending someone and I bet that if a total starnger walked up to you and said F you you would take offense.
What is the reason you wouldn't say F michigan at michigan surrounded by michigan fans. fear ,.
so don't give me any talk about how you swear anytime you want.
the main reason most of you swear here is to prop yourself up because you think it makes you a big man to do it on the internet and all the time it makes you a little man. JMO.

Eh, martin pretty much said everything I would say.

Except this, if you don't think I'd yell, at the top of my lungs, "FUCK MICHIGAN" surrounded by Michigan fans...then you don't fucking know me very well.

I would take just as much offense if said stranger would walk up to me and say "I do not like you".

I guess it must be an "age thing" as the younger generation is much less offended by things like swear/curse words and use them much more in talk then "older" folk.

Uh, yeah. That's the point of the thread. I wasn't asking people when and where they think saying 'fuck' is ok, I asked why people are offended by certain words. Again, if I called you a motherfucker, I'd expect you to get offended. Saying "what the fuck" isn't meant to be an offensive statement, yet if I said it in front of a customer, I'd probably get fired.
and I bet that if a total starnger walked up to you and said F you you would take offense.
You'd lose that bet. I'd be confused, but not offended.

Swear words only have stronger meaning because people allow them to have stronger meaning. Ignore them as nothing, and they lose all their punch. That is what is so ironic about making them taboo. The more taboo you make them, the stronger they get. Eliminate the taboo meaning, and you eliminate swear words. One less thing to worry about.

Fuck Fear. I'm going to Denver in a friggin Red Wings jersey for pete's sake

I don't fear one man over another (well except Mili when he's pissed) but other than that...well yeah....

so don't give me any talk about how you swear anytime you want.

There's nothing like sitting someone in front of a computer with a keyboard to get them to type crazy things.

The reason I refrain from swearing sometimes is because society has placed a mystery negativity on certain words. I'm still waiting on an answer to my question regarding why these words are so bad. Why is "shit" bad, but "poo" not? They mean exactly the same thing. Only one is for kids, the other would send a kid to the principal's office.

I've said fuck Michigan around Michigan fans, just like they've said fuck Ohio State to me. If someone wants to fight about that, then they already wanted to fight in the first place.

The main reason I swear on here is because they're words. I've never said or even thought that it makes me look like a big man. I'm not trying to impress anyone, it's the internet. I don't care whether or not internet people like me.

Please, stop making such broad generalizations. I find it ironic that you have a problem with profanity, yet have no problems belittling peoples' intelligence or whatever.

I didn't care for Best's response either, but that's been well covered by now

Then why don't you say poo? Tell me you wouldn't laugh if someone called you a poo-head, I would (assuming he couldn't end me with one swing).
I don't care whether or not internet people like me.
Well that's good :p

There are words, at least to me personally, that carry far more weight than swear words.

For instance, if someone, to my face, calls me stupid, we're fighting. They can say all the fucks they want, doesn't really get me too riled.
