I know I've seen alot of animostiy toward soccer around here in the past. I love the game very much, but I am not one of those soccer evangelists who is trying to convert everyone into loving soccer. I think though the time has come though, for the people of the Columbus area to step up and show huge support for the Columbus Crew. They are on a league record 16-game unbeaten streak (8-0-8), and with tonight's 1-0 win in Chicago, they locked up the Eastern Conference title and home field advantage throughout the postseason.

I know they will never be as big a deal as the Buckeyes or Blue Jackets or even the Clippers, but the Crew are on a special run right now, and it'd be a downright shame for them to not have the crowd support they deserve when the playoffs arrive. I went to their home playoff match last year against the Revs, and even though the crowd that was there was ok, I think Columbus can do much better. Their first playoff game will be either October 30 or 31 (There is no doubt in my mind that it will be scheduled around the Buckeye football game), and I plan on driving up from Dayton to lend my support. I hope to see a ton of people there!

I personally love the sport of soccer, and enjoyed watching the Crew when I was in grad school and they were playing at Ohio Stadium. It's great to see them return to the form they had back then, even without arguably the two best players to play in MLS that they once had (Friedel and McBride). There's a lot of promise there, and the Crew looks like a franchise that can attract people now (sanneh comes to mind). Hopefully this is a dynasty in the making, or at least an extended return to the glory days.

I may not be speaking for everyone else, but I think soccer is about as exciting as watching a cow eat grass. I'm sure it is just my own ignorance in relation to the sport that keeps it from being exciting, but I just can't watch it. Same thing with hockey, I hate watching it and I hate hearing 1460 wasting my time to talk about it every Wednesday. I'd say to nearly everyone here, Buckeye Football is #1 and everything else falls a distant second. My time, personally, is divided this way.

1. Buckeye Football - 80%
2. Browns Football - 13%
3. Buckeye Basketball - 5%
4. Reds Baseball - 1%
5. Cavs Basketball - 1%

I've paid attention to Crew scores in the past but didn't even know they were good this year. I just think that soccer is overlooked because it's not nearly as common here and people don't understand the fine points enough to appreciate the talent, because we haven't played. Just my opinion...

Hockey, at its best, is a pretty awesome sport. But, I can completely see why you'd have a hard time getting into the Columbus expansion team (the SilverBacks, or whatever their name is).

I used to be a huge hockey fan till about the age of 20. It was easily up there with my other favorite sports. Since then, I hardly watch or follow it anymore. The NHL has completely ruined its product. And that's not an exclusive knock on them, because the NBA and NFL are as useless as they come too. Pro sports have completely entered the dark times. They expand, expand, expand for more money, the product on the court/field/ice is destroyed, and the games become boring to watch.

Back off, Oiler. Hockey rules. You just need to go to a game. I never had one ounce of interest in hockey until I went to a Blue Jackets game, but now I try to watch every game I can....although with this lockout, the sport is taking one hell of a nosedive.

As for soccer, I agree with Oiler, not all that interested. I've gone to several games, but there just isn't the same excitement or appeal for me.

I'm still trying to figure out why baseball isn't useless, all 162 regular season games worth. Unless I'm actually at a game I seriously can't sit through a 9 inning baseball game.

It will be interesting to see how many people come out to see the Crew after the success they've had on the field. If they don't get the fans in the seats now you wonder if they ever will.

Its just my opinion, Nutty. I still like baseball, and get very into it come playoff time. I think its tough to sit through a 9 inning regular season game too, but the other sports I could care less about.

I actually still like the NBA, but the on-court product is awful. I'll follow my team pretty closely, but I can't sit through a game. An 86-82 NBA game is as boring as watching a Thirtysomething marathon. The teams can't crack 100 points anymore.

And the NFL is the worst, IMO. Maybe because its the day after the College games, but I have 0 interest in anything that happens in the pro games. They're as boring as they come, and the 100 pre and post game (analysis of nothing) shows make it even worse.

I think the last two home games were sell outs.

anyway... jlb- DOn;t listen to them-- Soccer is awesome if you understand the game... Like anything else, if you don't spend time with it you won't appreciate it... much like Europeans trying to like baseball... most of them don't get it... and don't care... and that's fine.

Just as a side note... Michael Jordan (With assists from Dominique Wilkins and Clyde Drexler) single handedly ruined the NBA.

Can anyone make a damn 15 foot jumper?

Can't agree with you there...if today's players would play half as hard, have half the heart or talent, or be half of the role models these guys were, the NBA would be a different world.

They played all-around games with absolute effort...not that bullshit they prance on the court nowadays

The point is they don't have half the damn talent... (thats' not their fault, MJ was a freak) and there are still some guys who play with plenty of intensity... the problem is that "Everyone wants to be like Mike"

Guess what?

Everyone ain't Mike. Everyone else has to know how to knock down open jumpers, Everyone Else needs to know how to play Defense (MJ was a great defender too, but they don't have that contest right before the slam dunk contest) Everyone else needs to know how to run a pick and roll.

This isn't the all the kids fault either... we also need to blame the NBA execs who put their teams together in an attempt to catch lightning in a bottle by drafting kids that aren't ready- and may never be-, instead of drafting kids who can actually play.

Gotta agree with the grad here. MJ, 'Nique, and Drex may have played above the rim, but they played the game the right way.

Today's players have talent, but they don't go to college to develop their game or add any substance to it. Plus, they never need to because (with the salary cap & expansion), they only play a 1-4 offense or a 2 man game in the NBA, anyway.

The NBA was in its heyday in the 80's. It'll never approach that level again.

Okay- Maybe you two aren't getting my point. I'm not Blaming these guys. I'm saying that the phenomena of how they palyed ruined the NBA. (To be quite honest, I never really thought 'nique was that good of a player... but he could do some crazy shit)

No, I get your point, I just disagree. Lets take the perfect case example of "today's player" who you're referring to. For argument's sake, lets take Stephon Marbury (you can insert any one of a number of players into this example: Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady, Allen Iverson, etc.), but I'm taking Marbury.

Yes, you're correct that Marbury tries to emulate flashy players like 'Nique and Drexler. However, those players had flash but also spent three to four years playing in college and developed the skills you referred to: defense, 15 foot jumper, free throw shooting, solid footwork, and team basketball.

Nowadays, Stephon Marbury goes to Georgia Tech for one year (at most), never has a humbling period, never has a coach with the authority to make him learn the fundamentals, never learns how to play with people of lesser talent, and hence, never learns them.

Marbury now goes to the T-Wolves, has the authority and the paycheck to make the coach do what HE wants to do, not the other way around. He never learned the fundamentals, and never will. The coach can never teach him, because if the coach pisses him off, he'll bitch to the owner, sulk, or play uninspired basketball and the coach is gone the next day. So, what we have is a kid who has the talent to do flashy things "Like MiKe," but never learns to play the game the right way. He has all the talent to become a great defender, a winner, and a HOF'er, but never gets there.

So, I get your point, but I blame a different cause. These kids have the talent to play like those guys, but they never are put in a position to learn the game. I can't blame that on the Human Highlight Reel, or players like him.
