Catch him if they can: Colts face tough task corralling Hester

MICHAEL MAROT

Associated Press

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The mere thought of trying to corral Devin Hester kept Indianapolis' special teams coach wide awake last week.
Russ Purnell isn't getting much rest in South Florida, either.
"I slept about four hours for four nights," Purnell said. "He's extremely talented and his blockers are outstanding. That's what really gets lost in this is how good his blockers are."

Rashied's story: He's the Best Buy for the Bears

RICK GANO

Associated Press

MIAMI - From the ArenaBowl to the Super Bowl, Rashied Davis' improbable journey causes Bears teammates to shake their heads.
"It's a great story," fellow wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad said.
Davis escaped a violent neighborhood in South Central Los Angeles, where his father was shot to death.
Davis didn't even play organized football until he walked on at West Los Angeles Community College. Later, he landed at San Jose State.

Bears try to emerge from '85 team's shadow

STEVEN WINE

Associated Press

MIAMI - Now a 300-pound guard for the Chicago Bears, Ruben Brown was big even as a 13-year-old Pee Wee League lineman in 1985.
The Bears were big then, too. They had Walter Payton, Jim McMahon and William "The Refrigerator" Perry, a 375-pound defensive tackle who occasionally doubled as a ball carrier and became a folk hero.
That's why Brown's Pee Wee teammates wanted him to switch positions.

MIAMI ? Peyton Manning can be frustrating to watch, because he rarely takes a snap from center when you expect it.

He?ll back off, point left, point right, look here and there, approach the center again, back off into the shotgun formation, bark out some impossible-to-decipher signals, fake like he?s taking a snap, run through another series of gesticulations and then, finally, the play may begin.

?I have no idea what all that stuff means,? Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher said on Wednesday.

?I?m looking forward to playing him because I want to see for myself how he does the things that he does. I haven?t played against anyone who does that,? said rookie defensive end Mark Anderson

Polian trying to fill gap in NFL resume

2/1/2007, 12:54 a.m. ETBy DAVE GOLDBERG
The Associated Press MIAMI (AP) ? Bears general manager Jerry Angelo has a much shorter resume than his Colts counterpart, Bill Polian. He also owns the one thing Polian still hungers for ? a Super Bowl ring.
That shiny piece of hardware on his hand ? he scouted for the 1986 New York Giants ? may be why Angelo seems more relaxed about Sunday's Super Bowl, even joking when asked about the quarterback matchup between his erratic Rex Grossman and the acclaimed Peyton Manning....

Column: Where's Jim McMahon partying?

2/1/2007, 4:50 a.m. ETBy JIM LITKE
The Associated Press
MIAMI (AP) ? If it wasn't for the scantily clad models promoting liquor companies, men's magazines and the occasional Spanish-language TV network, you'd think an Amway convention was on tap this weekend instead of the most overhyped sporting event on the planet...

[FONT=arial,sans-serif]SPORTS: Urlacher's strength is a beautiful mind
By Bud Shaw

MIAMI ? Brian Urlacher talks of playing fast, not angry.

Within the legacy of Bears football, he knows how that sounds. It?s like preaching vegetarianism at a pig roast.

?Butkus was mean,? Chicago?s middle linebacker said this week. ?He was violent and he could do whatever he wanted to on the field and get away with it. Back then, you could do whatever you wanted to somebody and you didn?t get fined, wouldn?t get suspended.

Colts' defense fixed on the run

Friday, February 02, 2007 Tony Grossi

Plain Dealer Reporter
Miami- The biggest mismatch of Super Bowl XLI on paper isn't the quarterback matchup of Peyton Manning and Rex Grossman.
It's the Chicago running game against the Indianapolis run defense.

Numbers tell story of XLI YEARS
It?s not gospel, but clich?s come close to the truth in the end

RUSTY KENNEDY ASSOCIATED PRESS A total of 14 turnovers in two Super Bowl losses were a source of great pain for Buffalo quarterback Jim Kelly and his Bills, who lost four championship games overall.

The Super Bowl is all about numbers, and not just those pretentious Roman numerals marking each game played on our nation?s version of a Roman holiday.
Numbers suggest the first Super Bowl, then known as the AFL-NFL World Championship Game, wasn?t a success. More than 31,000 tickets went unsold (even though they cost just $6, $10 and $12) as Green Bay beat Kansas City on Jan. 15, 1967, in Los Angeles.

Bears linebacker in middle of debate
Some say Urlacher is the best player in NFL; other say he?s overrated

Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher doesn?t have one sack this season.

MIAMI ? The face looks as it should, hard and plain. The hair is buzzed to the scalp, and the eyes suggest contact might be at your peril.

Super Bowl forecast: wet, windy February 3, 2007

MIAMI (AP) -- The Super Bowl may be wetter -- and windier -- than players and fans might like.
Brisk winds of 10 mph to 20 mph and a temperatures in the mid- to upper-60s are forecast for Sunday along with scattered showers throughout the day. "It's going to make it feel cooler than it will actually turn out to be," Dan Dixon, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, said Saturday. The weather will certainly be a lot more accommodating than in Indianapolis or Chicago, where hometown fans of the Colts and Bears are bracing for subzero wind chills.

Clutch kickers await Super Bowl clash

BARRY WILNER

Associated Press

MIAMI - Robbie Gould knows who he wants lining up for the biggest kick in the biggest game. It isn't him. Well, he sure wouldn't mind if he gets the call. But the Chicago Bears' outstanding placekicker, an All-Pro this season, recognizes who is the best clutch kicker in the game: his mentor, Adam Vinatieri.

Urlacher keeps bruising tradition alive

JIM LITKE

Associated Press

MIAMI - Teams keep score in different ways. The Chicago Bears will not always beat you. But they will always beat you up.
Few stories illustrate that better than the tale former linebacker Doug Buffone told on the eve of the Super Bowl.
"We'd just lost a close game to Detroit one year and I was really steamed. I'm throwing pieces of my uniform around the locker room and suddenly Abe," Buffone said, referring to former coach Abe Gibron, "shows up next to my stool and says, 'What are you so mad about?'
