You have to realize that 10 years of those statistics are under the infamous Houston Nutt, who is historically bad in bowl games. Regardless, past stats don't matter. Isn't tOSU 0-9 vs. SEC teams in bowls or something like that? I honestly don't think that holds any water in the sugar bowl THIS season, as it was the past and just that.

If the Razorbacks get a pass for Houston Nutt, the Buckeyes get a pass for John Cooper.

Agree that past results posted by past teams are irrelevant

I can't think of a bowl game the Buckeyes have played in that has been a more intriguing matchup. Always fun to play someone for the first time. I agree that this will be a terrific game, though I'm at a loss to understand how anyone can think the Buckeye D will give up 40-plus. Hell, the Razorbacks are unlikely to have enough possessions for that to happen.

I agree that pass rush is critical, given Mallett's statuesque pocket presence. But I'm not optimistic that we will find one, since it's been AWOL all season. I think pass rush is the weakest part of our D, to be honest.

Another concern: that Tressel will not be as scared of the Hogs O as he was of Oregon's last season. I really believe it will be important to score as many points as we can against Arkansas, which means taking a few more chances.

Welcome to the Hog fans. I believe Youngstown OH native Ron Calcagni (Chaney High School) continues to hold the record for most wins by a starting QB at Arkansas including the huge upset over Billy "Boomer Sooner" Sim's Sooners in the 1978 Orange Bowl. As a Buckeye fan I am looking forward to the matchup by the OSU D against Mallet.

Look at the strength of schedule, if Arkansas would have played OSU schedule and OSU played Arkansas's schedule, I think you would see these number shift dramatically in the HOG's favor. OSU has a good offense, but no sane OSU fan can honestly say there offense is as good the HOG's.

If we have any Hogs out there willing, I would like to ask some questions. I am a Buckeye, but I love college football and it's history as well.

Who do most Hog fans consider their main rival? Is it LSU/somebody else in the SEC or do you consider Texas or another team from the old SWC your rival still? You're still scheduling them when possible, no?

Where do you do your recruiting? Does Arkansas have the blue chippers you need or do you raid Texas, Florida etc.?

What are your thoughts about the SWC and your move to the SEC? Do you wish for the "good ole days"? Or were the "good ole days" not so good?

Do you feel like you're an SEC team or do you still feel more aligned and have more things in common with the Texas schools?

Just interested in your thoughts about the college football landscape considering this last off season and with Nebraska now moving to join the Big Ten+2. Also, there were lots of rumors about Jerry Jones trying to build some momentum to lure the Hogs back to the Big XII. Is that something Hog fans would ever want to do or is it not even a consideration? Are you "all in" with the SEC or would you consider a move if the price and timing was right?

These are just questions from a curious mind. Will be interested in any responses and to see how younger and older fans feel about some of these questions.

I'll take a swing at this one.

We don't have a real rival.

In the old SWC days, we considered Texass (spit) our rival, but they considered us #3 behind Texas A&M and Oklahoma.

We have renewed our second rival from the old SWC days with a ten year deal with Texas A&M (we played the second game this year), played each year in JerryWorld stadium in Dallas. We owned them in the SWC and will continue to do so.

LSU is setting up to become a real rivalry. There is a trophy, some history beyond our joining the SEC and they don't really have a real rival - being sort of in the same boat that Arkansas was in the SWC as the teams they consider rivals rank LSU #2 or #3 on their list. Add the fact that we are playing real competitively against one another over since joining the SEC and you have a budding rivalry game. It does have a bit of manufactured rival quality to it, but setting it up as the last game of the season each year, it has often had implications toward the SEC Championship standings.

The game with Mississippi has gotten real hot. We have a long history with them, playing annually for many years before joining the SEC. But the real reason is that Houston Nutt coaches there now. Many Arkansas fans HATE the man.

Without getting too deep into the reasons for that hatred, I'll give the highlights:

1. Houston Nutt was ran out of Arkansas with a golden parachute buyout, and two (three?) days later was announced as the coach of Mississippi - a division opponent/rival.
2. Houston Nutt divided the fanbase against one another. Some accepted him as 'the best we could get' and accepted his mediocrity as the best we could ever hope for.
3. Houston Nutt was dug into the program like a chigger. Dislodging him was a painful, ugly process that consisted of putting former coach and athletic director Frank Broyles out to pasture. Broyles had led the program for 50 odd years, is beloved and had done some really great things for Arkansas.

Arkansas and Texas are our traditional recruiting grounds, with occasional kids from OK, MO, TN and MS. Bobby Petrino has expanded that far and wide. Kids, especially on the offensive side of the ball, seem to want to play in his system. With his reputation as an offensive mastermind, we are pulling in kids from everywhere it seems. Arkansas doesn't produce a lot of 5 star talent - we are a small state. We have to recruit well outside our borders. Bobby Petrino is doing a great job of that where Houston Nutt could not.

The 'good ol' days' of the SWC were pretty good. We were clearly the #2 team in the conference behind Texass (spit), won a NC in 1964 and won lots of conference championships. We were a national power in the 60's and 70's, and had some significant success in the 80's.

However, moving to the SEC was one of the best things that former AD Broyles ever did for us. It's taken a while, but we finally and truly belong. There are some old school fans that think moving to the Big 12 is a good idea, because they miss our annual beat down at the hands of Texass (spit), but they are dying off. I don't ever see a scenario where we would make that move. We kicked the Texass (spit) dust off our heels once, and to get back into bed with them, and the completely dysfunctional Big 12, would be a huge mistake.

We are 'all in' in the SEC.

Maybe I'm wrong about attendance. I'm interested to see how it turns out.

After watching all of Arkansas's games this year, I just really expect Arkansas to score around 4 TDs. Also, if I was a betting man, I would bet that Arksnsas scores on their first possession. In the three years I've watched Petrino coached teams, no one is better at scripting the first plays of the game.

I don't know if y'all had a chance to watch the Arkansas/LSU game last week, but I would expect our game to play out very similar to that one.

LSU has a very good defense. It may be the most talented defense in the nation. It may also be the most undisciplined defense in the nation. Arkansas gained 464 yards against LSU. 185 yards of this was on 2 plays. The likelyhood of Arkansas getting 2 plays like that against the Ohio State defense is up there with snowballs in hell. It's something that doesn't happen.

Someone else here has done the work already. I believe Ohio State has given up two plays this season between 38-42 yards with nothing longer and the number of plays they've given up between 20-37 yards is very low. It's a defense that makes you move the chains and paly mistake free football. It's also a defense that gives up 250 yards a gain on average.

A first drive score by Arkansas wouldn't worry me at all. Ohio State has a tendency to come out base and give up some points early and then adjust. Penn State had 56 yards in the second half after gaining over 200 in the first half. Iowa had a similar result. MIchigan got some yards in the 4th quarter but still ended up with less than 100 yards of offense in the second half. In other words, if you're going to get them then get them early.

So, I don't see it playing out like LSU. LSU has given up a ton of huge plays this season. Ohio State has given up zero. You're going to have to earn your points. Perhaps the Hogs are up to the task. :highfive:

Passing wise - no
Rushing wise - yes.

That makes it clear. Sounds like that was a pretty shitty time in Hog land...

Pretty stout.

We didn't play Florida this year, but last year we did pretty well against them. We would have killed them this year, but that's more of a statement about how awful they were than one about us.

This year vs. LSU, we absolutely man-handled a very good LSU Dline. Late in the 4th, we made them our women and were running at will on them.

Your comment about treating them like your women, brought to mind my favorite joke about an Arkansas alum:

Question; What's the only think John Daley hits farther than a golf ball?

Answer; His wife:biggrin:

It was awful.

And still, despite what Bobby Petrino has done - going from a bare cupboard outhouse, to a fully stocked penthouse in three short years - there are some folks here in Arkansas that would take Houston Nutt back in a heartbeat.

It truly defies a rational explanation.
