Damn.

I had a long post written up about the Razorback offensive line and my browser crashed before I could hit 'post'.

Damn you Al Gore! If you hadn't invented the internets, this would not have happened!!111+!1ELEVENTY!!1

<Please note: the Al Gore reference is humor, not politics. Al Gore fans should get a sense of humor already. Also, I love Al Gore. That is all.>

Well, I've said a lot already on this board, and I'll have more to say over the next few days.

And I'm not saying anything your man has to say is completely off-base, just that to someone who follows the Razorbacks as closely as I do, he's missing some things that you won't get from watching highlight clips and reading blog posts.

One of the things I wrote about in the lost browser crashed post is that no one seems to be picking up on the Razorbacks offensive line alignment.

The Hogs use a strong side/weak side alignment instead of the almost universal left side/right side alignment - for those who are unfamiliar with the alignment, the guards and tackles switch sides depending on which side of the hash mark they are closest to. It's not that it is any kind of huge advantage, but it is something that has to be accounted for by opposing defenses and can create matchup problems.

The same five players have started every game on the offensive line. It's a unit that has improved significantly over the year. They have gelled into a strong and cohesive unit. If one looks at the Bama and Auburn games as a benchmark for what to expect in the Sugar Bowl, they are likely to be surprised at just how good they have become.

There is more, but it's tired and I'm late.

I wondered why they broke up.

Your man wrote:

Arkansas does a nice job out-flanking defenses with stretch: by running it to the boundary; by running weakside; and by using pre-snap motion to change strength. Stretch is Arkansas' favorite play for several reasons. First, it gets Knile Davis, their leading rusher, to the outside. He has good top-end speed, but is a very angular runner, so he is more effective where he can stick his foot in the ground and try to gain the edge, rather then cutting off blocks between the tackles. Second, it negates the relative weakness of Arkansas' offensive line (as a unit). Arkansas' talent is at the skill positions. With the exception of perhaps tackle DeMarcus Love, Arkansas does not have the offensive line that is going to win games in the trenches. Stretch allows Arkansas' line to neutralize the opposing defense while allowing Davis to get the edge.

I don't think this is a very deep understanding of the Arkansas running game or the offensive line, and isn't altogether accurate.

Consider:

Credit to another post from the same blog but a different author

What that graphic shows is the run/pass ratio of the Razorback offense. The common perception is that the Petrino offense is a pass-happy one, which isn't really the case. It is more balanced than what is commonly thought. For the season it is 48% run and 52% pass. Of note, with the emergence of Knile Davis, the last 4 games of the season The Razorbacks favored the run by a pretty good margin.

And to say that the Razorbacks can't run between the tackles isn't really accurate either. In the Razorbacks last game of the season vs. LSU, the Razorbacks ran the ball 9 consecutive times in the 4th quarter. The Hog offensive line manhandled the Tiger defensive line to the point that they had to call a time out because they were gassed - despite the fact that time was running out and they were down by two scores.

The #5 defense in the nation (at that point) gave up 464 yards - 144 of it on the ground - and 31 points to the Arkansas offense.

After the Auburn game, the lights came on for the offensive line and the running game, making the Arkansas offense a much more dangerous team.

I get disagreeing with his conclusion about the Arkansas OL, but Knile did a large chunk of his damage off-tackle or outside when I watched. He can run inside, but is more of a slasher.

Oh, there is no doubt about that. But running between the tackles isn't as rare or unsuccessful as your man made it seem in his article.

Or perhaps I'm a bit touchy about the subject.

Arkansas? offense has personified balance this season. The Hogs are the only team in the country with a 3,000-yard passer (Mallett), a 1,000-yard rusher (Davis) and five 500-yard receivers (Joe Adams, Jarius Wright, Cobi Hamilton, D.J. Williams and Childs).

?When one?s not working, you can always go to the other,? Davis said. ?But the whole key to it has been our offensive line. They?ve been together all 12 games this year, and to have that kind of chemistry opens up a lot of things for you on offense.?
