When her son first discussed playing football for Ohio State, Charlotte Heyward-Blackwell was, "totally against it."

"That's too far away," she told Cameron Heyward, who was a junior at Peachtree Ridge High School in Suwanee, Ga. "I don't want you to go that far."

"We were coming up for a game and I was kind of going with the mind-set of, 'We'll go visit just to erase (OSU) off the list,' Charlotte recalls. "Instead, we got there and I just fell in love with everything about it."

Cameron, a defensive lineman, played immediately as a true freshman in 2007, and this past season he earned a starting role. His experience is just another slice of the Buckeyes' recent history of success in recruiting Georgia kids.

Heyward was not the first Georgia recruit of the Jim Tressel era -- safety Brandon Mitchell was a member of the 2002 recruiting class. Eventually, Mitchell begat Anderson Russell, who begat Antonio Henton, who begat Heyward, who begat Keith Wells.

And the coaching staff is trying to add more peaches from Georgia to its upcoming classes.

It makes sense. Although many people think of Florida as the gold standard of Southern football talent, Georgia by some accounts is just as fertile.

"I read something the other day that said that for our size, we produce the most Division I talent (to out-of-state colleges) because we only have two major universities (Georgia and Georgia Tech)," said Todd Wofford, assistant coach at Gainesville (Ga.) High School, Wells' alma mater. "The in-state schools can only sign so many; the kids have to go somewhere, and colleges across the country know that."

Bill Kurelic, recruiting analyst for Bucknuts.com, said, "Everybody thinks of Florida, but Georgia is a great state for talent, and there's not as much (recruiting) competition as there is in Florida."

kurelic should look at the top talent in Georgia for the last few years through, those recruiting rankings, which I think are a joke but, Bama, Florida, FSU and LSU hit hard as heck and get some of the top talent from Georgia. If GA ever locked up Georgia they would be scary tough.

Ohio State loves recruiting peaches

Fans wondering where Ohio State coaches are spending their recruiting time when they're not scouring the Buckeye State would be wise to look south -- in Georgia.

A hotbed for football, Georgia has become somewhat of a focal point for Urban Meyer during his time with the Buckeyes.

While he has yet to land a prospect from the Peach State as coach at Ohio State, it?s not for lack of trying, as the recruiting classes of 2012-14 have 29 Georgians with offers from Meyer.

Incidentally, of the 29, there are 18 who appear or have appeared in the ESPN 150.

Meyer could get his first Georgian this season, with linebacker Trey Johnson (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Vonn Bell (Rossville, Ga./Ridgeland) in the mix.

The "Big Three" (Texas, Florida, and California) and the rest. Had always considered Ohio as #4 in the quest for top-flight D-I talent. However, methinks that Georgia has overtaken Ohio for the #4 position. And if what I see for 2014 recruiting class is somewhat correct (in Dec 2012), then Louisiana might supplant Ohio as #5....

We don't have the scholarships or resources to 100% lock up the state.
Alone there are Four Million People in Metro Atlanta and it's four main counties. No way we could ever get every single 4* and 5* recruit.

You have to also consider that south of Macon (Lowndes Co, Valdosta, Savannah...etc) is essentially North Florida territory. All those kids grew up begin geographically closer to UF/FSU.

I live in north Atlanta, and the area is too big to say there is a pipeline. They don't have the high schools Ohio does that are known to pump out D1 kids year in and year out. They have a hundred schools, any of which could be the school to have the best player in the state that year, so it's not like Ohio, where if you have good ties with one school, you can build a pipeline. At the end of the day, Georgia is like Florida, there are so many colleges here getting talent, a good dozen can say they have a Georgia pipeline. That said, it's always good to get top kids from this state, which we all know.

I say we get at least 3 from the Peach State in McMillan, Autry, and one other. If I go with my gut I say we also get Orlando Brown, Watson, and Kitt to make 5 Georgians. McMillan is the equivalent of what Brewster was to our '08 class and he is selling OSU to guys who already have a great interest in OSU and love UFM.

That's my thought too. If we can get at least 3-4 of these Georgia kids in the 2014 class, it would be a great haul. We are on those kids hard!

24/7 Free - Buckeyes Feeling Peachy

ATLANTA, Ga. -- One thing has become abundantly clear at the Rising Seniors Georgia Junior Bowl -- Ohio State is making its presence known in the Peach State.

Consider the following:
-Both five-star inside linebacker Raekwon McMillan and four-star athlete Myles Autry call the Buckeyes their leader. McMillan, the state's No. 2-ranked player for 2014, went so far as to say Ohio State had a pretty good edge over his No. 2 team, Clemson.

-Four-star receiver Demarre Kitt, a one-time Georgia commit who until recently was thought to be a strong Clemson lean, said the Buckeyes now are tied at the top with the Tigers.

-Four-star Clemson quarterback commit Deshaun Watson, a Tigers commit since last February, lists Ohio State as his No. 2 but admits the Buckeyes are giving him much to think about.

-According to numerous players on hand at this event, several of them -- Autry, Georgia safety commit Nick Glass, Kitt, McMillan, defensive back Nicholas Ruffin and Watson included -- intend to visit the Buckeyes together this spring.
