Top juniors in Georgia
By Michael Carvell
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

1. Deshaun Watson, QB, Gainesville, 6-foot-4, 200 pounds. Committed to Clemson, but plans visits to Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon, Auburn, Tennessee, LSU, Florida State and USC.

2. Lorenzo Carter, DE, Norcross, 6-6, 230. Compared with former Norcross standout Adrian Hubbard, who now plays at Alabama. Carter has 22 offers, including Georgia Tech and Georgia.

3. Raekwon McMillan, LB, Liberty County, 6-3, 240. He?s already ranked as a five-star by Rivals and has more than 40 offers, with Ohio State as his early leader.

4. Dontavius Russell, DT, Carrollton, 6-3, 300. Early offers from Tech, Alabama, Florida and South Carolina.

5. Cortez McDowell, DB, Locust Grove, 6-2, 203. The speedy safety has 10 offers and got his most recent at Alabama?s Junior Day.

6. Nick Chubb, RB, Cedartown, 5-11, 210. Put up eye-popping numbers as junior, but no one knew he was legit until he starred in junior all-star game. Dozen offers, including Tech and Georgia.

7. Demarre Kitt, WR, Sandy Creek, 6-1, 180. Former UGA commit lists his leaders as Clemson, Auburn, Ohio State and Oregon.

8. Milan Richard, TE, Savannah Calvary Day, 6-3, 190. Herschel Walker?s nephew has offers from Tech and Georgia, and was visited by Yellow Jackets coach Paul Johnson last week.

9. Christian Harris, OL, Collins Hill, 6-5, 266. Has only a few small offers, but things will heat up this spring.

10. Bryson Allen-Williams, DE, Cedar Grove, 6-1, 215. Pass rusher has more than 20 offers, including Tech and Georgia.

Top 20 Posted on Georgia's Dawg Bark message boards.
Author does freelance scouting for Rivals and 24/7 and is hit on about 70% of his predictions on NSD this year. Leaders and Leans are Listed:

#1 - DE/OLB - Lorenzo Carter ? 6'5 235 ? He is still raw but has the highest upside of any player in the state. It will be a UGA v. Alabama battle until the end.

#2 - DL - Elisha Shaw ? 6'5 295 ? He is a monster of a young man just scratching the surface of what he can do. It will be a UGA, Ole Miss and Bama battle.

#3 ? QB ? Deshaun Watson ? 6'3 190 ? Great young QB with a lot of potential. Committed to Clemson and don't see him changing his mind.

#4 ? ILB ? Raekwon McMillan ? 6'2 235 ? Stud MLB who wants to get away from home. I see an Ohio State v. Clemson battle at this point.

#5 ? RB ? Nick Chubb ? 5'11 220 ? Best RB in the state of Georgia. Committed to UGA and don't see him wavering.

#6 ? CB ? Kalvarez Bessent ? 6'0 170 ? Another in the line of great CBs in GA this year. Solid commit to Alabama.

#7 ? CB - Malkom Parrish ? 5'9 186 ? Looks like a young Brandon Boykin. Solid commit to UGA.

#8 ? ILB ? Korie Rogers ? 6'2 220 ? Very talented MLB great football instincts. Committed to Clemson but UGA won't stop recruiting.

#9 ? DL ? Dontavius Russell ? 6'3 300 ? Was a monster as a junior and I only see him getting better. Solid UGA commit.

#10 ? OLB ? Bryson Allen-Williams ? 6'2 220 ? Good athlete, great motor. Solid commit to South Carolina.

#11 ? CB ? D.J. Smith ? 6'0 190 ? Solid corner prospect. Seems to want to get out of state and looks like a Tennessee v. South Carolina battle.

#12 ? CB ? Nick Ruffin ? 6'0 175 ? Great man-to-man coverage ability. Solid commit to Auburn.

#13 ? OT/DT ? Kendall Baker ? 6'6 285 ? Has tons of potential at Offensive Tackle on the college level. UGA is the certain favorite

#14 ? WR - Demarre Kitt ? 6'1 195 ? Solid WR but does not have the ?WOW? factor. Solid to Clemson.

#15 ? SS - Cortez McDowell ? 6'1 200 ? Good looking safety prospect. His recruitment is considered pretty wide open.

#16 ? DE - Dante Sawyer ? 6'3 245 ? One of the best pass rushers in the state. Good motor. Really likes UGA, Alabama and Auburn.

#17 ? ATH ? Myles Autry ? 5'9 175 ? Playmaker with the ball in his hands. Florida State looks to be in strong position with him.

#18 ? DL ? Johnny Dwight ? 6'3 300 ? Big body in the middle with solid strength. Solid commit to Bama.

#19 ? SS ? Nick Glass ? 6'2 205 ? A safety that might grow into a MLB?a trend at UGA. Solid commit to UGA.

#20 - CB ? Kendarius Webster ? 6'1 185 ? Has tons of potential, just needs technique. Considered a strong UGA lean.

All that early talk about how Ohio State was going to dip into the state of GA and snag 3 or 4 of their upper-tier recruits. It is looking more like we may get 1 and that 1 doesn't even look as solid as it did a few months ago....lol

It's a pity that UGA is unable to do a better job of locking up the home territory. Having that much trouble with Clemson is like the Buckeyes regularly getting out recruited in Ohio by WVU.

You need to be a bit more patient IMO, this transition wasn't going to take place instantly.
You face the same challenges that Spurrier, Richt or Muschamp would face if they decided to target kids from Glenville, St. Ignatius, St. X, Moeller....etc

Historical trends and regional connections are tough to buck. It'll be a multi-year process to consistently pull kids out of Metro Atlanta.

I think Clemson is a better program than Ohio... Something like Michigan State... Which still makes your first sentence true.

While I think that's a good comparison and that there is a small contingent of the UGA fanbase that is not satisfied with in-state recruiting, the state of Georgia poses different challenges for the home state schools.

The biggest and most obvious hurdle is the proximity of other major football programs. Within a days trip you can easily get to Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, and Clemson from metro Atlanta (GA's hottest recruiting ground). The other side affect which we've seen play out big over the past 2 years is the relationships with college staff's and high school coaches. Many of the program's listed above have football alumni as high school coaches all over the Atlanta area and Georgia. Add in the fact that Alabama continues to win and (basically) has 2 games in Atlanta every year and you're going to see some swing of talent to other programs.

As long as UGA continues to pull in their piece of the GA talent pool and recruit well nationally, you're not going to see anyone in Athens upset over this. After all, many of their headline players over the past 5 years haven't even come from the state of GA: Matt Stafford, Aaron Murray, Knowshon Moreno, AJ Green, John Jenkins, Todd Gurley, Keith Marshall.

They can't lock it down because the program is a chronic underachiever.

We can go back and forth about the underachieving label, but you are chronically under rating how deep the state is.

That's Scout's 2014 list of every four star recruit in the state.
Just four stars now, not five. There are 42 of them.

You can debate the how valid the rankings are and how reputable Scout.com is - but how the hell are we supposed to get everyone?
Last year we signed 32 kids, this year we only have 18 scholarships available.

The nations top program is 3.5 hours away.
Every school in the region is pouring into the state offering starting spots.
Can you grasp how competitive it is? If not, ask your coaches - they're getting a lesson right now.

The Bobcats have zero relevance to anything I wrote.

TSUN, ND & PSU are all within a days trip of Columbus.

I'm not saying that schools like Alabama & FSU aren't going to steal their share of GA kids (just like the schools mentioned above do in OH); I'm saying that if you are the uncontested top program in your state (apologies to your alma mater) and you are regularly struggling to keep large numbers of the top 10-15 in state kids from a school like Clemson, then there's a problem.
