Spring Practice Info and Tidbits (starts 3/31)

I don't think Braxton gets the start week 1. However, I do see him getting more PT than the rest of the QB's in the first 5 weeks and will still get some time situationally when Pryor is back. Too much ability to keep off the field.

Could just be me but I almost think it'd make more sense to RS Braxton if he doesn't win the competition outright.. now whether that's the staff's plan is another thing, with Cardale coming in next year and perhaps another

Miller has a shot, imho, because we have often lost focus and needed TP to bail us out with the run. I don't see that tendency changing, especially with three new players on the OL. If Miller can pick up enough to run the early season vanilla offense and can avoid turnovers, he can be the guy until TP comes back.

Spring Game Primer
theBuckeyeBattleCry.com

With spring practice well underway and the spring game quickly approaching, it is time to move from "way too early looks" at each position into some more informed analysis based on practice reports.

...

My attitude this offseason has always been that no matter what happens, when the Buckeyes take care of business on the field everything else will fade into the background.

Redemption through wins.

Off field BS be damned.

Here is a look at how each position is looking heading into the spring game.

As of Saturday there were 2 more weeks of Spring practice not to mention the entire summer camp. Any starting quarterback for the season opener is just speculation at this point. Needless to say, a lot can happen between now and September 3.

In my opinion, the key to winning the starting job will be able to understand the offense, recognize the defense, and make the "right decisions" very quicky. I wonder how many hours each of the quarterback candidates are spending in the film room.

I'm of the mindset that a lot of PT for 5 weeks and some meaningful snaps thereafter could be bigger for Brax's development than a redshirt. He will have been here since spring, which will help his understanding of the offense. He is a fantastic athlete that can contribute now at the very least with his feet. He has the respect of the upperclassmen already. Finally, as korchicki pointed out, JT was never going to RS Braxton, even before the Pryor suspension. You have Cardale coming in next year and possibly Dillon as well, so I would prefer some separation apart from the points above.

The fall will be the tail of the tape. The spring gives the coaches a gauge of where the ranking is now. IMO Miller hasd the highest ceiling for imrpovement from now till the season because of his youth. If Miller is 1st or 2nd going into fall he will probably be the starter. He has alot of time to improve and get his timing down with the WR's. Also alot of time for tape watching and schooling.

Then how do you get him ready for next season when Pryor's gone?

I was just looking at it from a standpoint of winning games this year. I think JT will pick the QB that will have us better prepared to win the five games TP is out. Now if that QB is Braxton then it's two birds with one stone with the development and winning.. I simply threw out the notion of a redshirt because i'm greedy and would like Braxton around as long as possible

RB, I agree.. separation is most definitely necessary, especially if Dillon decides to come on down

Miller could get some time in the beginning of the season(Tress has a history of playing young players in the early season), if he's ready.
Then you find out if TP is good to go or you need to make changes.
It's a weird, 2-3 season kind of year and a lot could happen.

Everyone seems to be forgetting that our oline is going to be green. Three new starters without much experience until Adams comes back and only 10 total olineman. We have shown a tendency in the JT years of having average Oline play. We can have all the talent in the world running the ball but we are thin and young in some places on the oline. This doesnt include JB Shugarts foot thing that is one of those injuries that doesnt seem to go away. Imho we will need a qb to win at least two games(MSU and Miami).

Another big area of concern is a young defense that really hasnt been tested much. We cant simply just beat teams because our defense is ranked top 5 in the country again. I think by the last 1/3 of the season our D will be great, but there will be some growing pains.

I for one hope that with that large of a stable of QB`s that we have one that can do great things. I am expecting great things from the starter for our 1st 5 games.

If our oline play is suspect, then imho Miller has to play. The staff will use his legs to do the things TP does. Go Bucks

Last season Norwell played in 11 games (including the Sugar Bowl), Mewhort played in 10 (including the Sugar Bowl), Linsley played in 6, and Hall played in 9 games including 1 start two years ago. They aren't grizzled veterans (Brewster and Shugarts are), but they do know what it takes to compete in games.

Cardale Jones is signed LOI for QB in class of 2012

Not to nit pick - and I agree Cardale has indicated his intent to come to OSU - but an LOI only commits a player for the next academic year. Even if Cardale has signed an LOI (and I don't know why he would have bothered) it would not be binding for 2012.
