Defensive dominance in latest scrimmage

The defense redeemed itself today for a poor ending to last week?s scrimmage in Ohio Stadium.

Either that, or the Ohio State offense is in DEEEEEEP trouble.

The Buckeyes defense dominated the scrimmage, which lasted about 60 plays before being shortened by a brief but fierce thunderstorm. Unofficially, the defense outscored the offense, 42-16.

Last Saturday, the offense staged a late comeback to record a 56-45 victory in about 80 plays.
The highlights _ or lowlights, depending on your point of view _ were four turnovers and a safety. Cornerback Bradley Roby had two interceptions and lineman John Simon had a ?triple crown? _ a sack, forced fumble and fumble recovery on the same play.

In addition to the two interceptions and Simon?s fumble recovery, there was a fourth turnover that could have been ruled either an interception or fumble. Verlon Reed caught a Braxton Miller and took a step before being drilled by safety Jeremy Cash, which knocked the ball loose and right into the arms of linebacker Dorian Bell.

In any case, it symbolized a miserable day for the OSU offense.

Spring Practice Insider: Defense Dominates Scrimmage
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Thunderstorms washed away the end of Ohio State?s scrimmage Saturday at Ohio Stadium, but not before the defense had its way with the offense.

Picking up where last week?s scrimmage left off, the final scoreboard read 87-72 when the first bolt of lightning sent everyone running for the locker rooms, but even Jim Tressel would have had a hard time evening things up with the way the Buckeyes looked offensively.

With Terrelle Pryor watching closely, Ohio State rotated all four scholarship quarterbacks Saturday hoping to get a good look at whoever will be their opening-day starter in the fall.

Instead, no one completed a pass during the scrimmage portion of practice until the fourth series when Braxton Miller connected with Corey ?Philly? Brown on a 5-yard slant pass. Prior to that, Brown had dropped a pass from Kenny Guiton that was intercepted by cornerback Bradley Roby.

Notes from an Ohio State scrimmage controlled by the defense, with video
Published: Saturday, April 16, 2011
By Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer

Notes from today's Ohio State scrimmage:

* The defense definitely ruled the day, which isn't unusual for Ohio State at this time of the spring. But this wasn't experienced players having an off day. This was some young guys who need to play well in order for the Buckeyes to succeed having some rough moments when we haven't seen a lot of good moments from them before. Center Mike Brewster said the offense had a good week of practice, but this was probably the worst day of the spring for the offense. It looked like it. The offense did not get into the endzone at all.

* Bradley Roby, fighting for the starting cornerback job opposite Travis Howard, had two interceptions, both off tipped balls. One was a short pass from Kenny Guiton that was tipped into the air by receiver Corey Brown and grabbed by Roby. The other was a 25-yard pass over the middle by Joe Bauserman that hit running back Jaamal Berry in the chest and popped up, allowing Roby to snag it.

[ Still, his day was about par for the course for the QBs and WRs as a whole; the wide receivers dropped way more passes than anyone would find acceptable, couldn't find separation from any of the defensive backs, and guys like T.Y. Williams and Philly Brown did little to reassure the small crowd of gathered Buckeye fans that the team will be able to make do without the talents of DeVier Posey for the first five games of the year. I hate to sound like a broken record, but the TEs and the RBs are going to be critical components of the passing game, even if it's more out of necessity than any innate desire to get the ball to them through the air.]

Kind of scary that Chris Fields is not even getting mentioned.

[The defense played extremely well across the board, and the competition between Bradley Roby, Nate Oliver, and Dionte Allen for the second corner spot opposite Travis Howard is going to be something to keep tabs on as the season gets closer.]

Thought Dominic Clark was likely 2nd corner?

Is it too soon to talk about moving Roby back to WR? He has phenomenal hands! He was catching the ball better than the WRs today! :shake:

Worked out alright for Teddy Ginn. :wink2:

It worked out OK for Ohio State, however, in the final analysis for Teddy Ginn maybe and maybe not. Possibly Ginn could be having a much better NFL career as a "shutdown cornerback". Who knows?

After I have had time to sit down and review the scrimmage, I think this was just a good day for the defense more than anything. They were playing with a chip on their shoulder...they were jacked like it was Michigan week. Keep in mind this was a defense without Barnett, Moeller, Domicone, Bryant and Corey "Pittsburgh" Brown in the secondary.

After reviewing the Spring Scrimmage "tape" the overall effect is a more positive outlook for the coming season. But, it should be obvious that we need a mobile QB for this team to reach it's previous heights of excellence.
The defense will be excellent, again.
The offense has tremendous running backs. And the WRs are starting to come along so they don't look like quite the liability they had been looking earlier.
Special teams will be good although I still worry about kickoff return coverage.
We still have the best talent in the Big Ten! Guys just need to step up.

It should be noted that we will have 2 games to work on things before going to Miami. Miami only has one game before they play us so that's an advantage for us. And Miami is going to a completely different coaching staff and will need adjustment time. It won't be an easy game by any stretch but I'm more hopeful we can squeek out a win, now.

I don't know how bad Bauserman has to play to lose the starting job, but he was horrendous yesterday. I believe Braxton was the only one who had what it takes to run our o-line depleted offense: outstanding mobility, a quick release, and good decision making. I can understand him being redshirted but if we play Bauserman we may just start 0-5...

We may start 0-5? Do you really believe that or are you just trying to prove how much you hate one of the Buckeye football players?
