Spring Practice Info and Tidbits (starts 3/31)

Last season Norwell played in 11 games (including the Sugar Bowl), Mewhort played in 10 (including the Sugar Bowl), Linsley played in 6, and Hall played in 9 games including 1 start two years ago. They aren't grizzled veterans (Brewster and Shugarts are), but they do know what it takes to compete in games.

Believe me I hope this oline blows me away and stays healthy....but only one start between all those guys and a bit of mop up duty means growing pains and plenty of missed assignments.

In hindsight it does seem that the oline issues have been much better and trending towards solid. Fingers crossed but I still believe it will be Miller time if the oline doesnt play well or stay healthy. Go Bucks

Those are encouraging numbers Buckeye86, thanks!

It's not like every team in college football brings back 2-3 year starters at every position across the board year in and year out. The staff will coach up the talent on the roster and the o-line (just like every other position) will be just fine. After all, we are talking about The Ohio State coaching staff, if you want to panic try being a diehard football fan of schools like Indiana or Minnesota. You don't win the conference every year (well, maybe not every year) with dumb luck.

Practice view: Of QBs, Pryor and things

By TIM MAY
As Ohio State staged yet another spring practice indoors this afternoon, it had the appearance of a main event with a curious sideshow.
Because while the various position groups were going about their drills at the beginning of the 30-minute viewing window for the media, quarterback Terrelle Pryor was on the far sideline throwing the ball. Under the supervision of coach Jim Tressel, in fact, Pryor threw for a while kneeling on one knee, and then some more while sitting on his rear.
It wasn't punishment for the three-year starter, who is destined to spend the first five games of the 2011 season on suspension along with four other players for their role in receiving improper benefits from a tattoo parlor owner. He was going to be held out of the primary drills this spring anyway, since he is still recovering from a right foot injuy suffered in the Sugar Bowl win over Arkansas that required surgery.
The drills were designed to give him throwing time, even as Joe Bauserman, Taylor Graham, Kenny Guiton and freshman Braxton Miller compete to earn the starting job for at least the first five games this season. Pryor got into it, too, firiing usually crisp spirals to backup punter Derek Irwin about 15 yards away.
As for the rest of the team, it was difficult to tell whether there were any shakeups in the pecking order at most positions in the wake of the extended scrimmage the team staged in Ohio Stadium on Saturday.

Spring Practice Insider: New Look Buckeyes?
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? The Ohio State coaching staff visited a number of places this spring in hopes of learning something new they could use on the football field.

That included the University of Oklahoma, LSU and even the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the biggest wrinkles may have actually come to them.

Tuesday?s spring practice featured some new-look screen plays that seemed oddly familiar, familiar because they were being run by new wide receivers coach Stan Drayton.

Now in his first spring with the Buckeyes, Drayton came to Columbus by way of Florida where he helped former Gators? head coach Urban Meyer put together one of the most unique offenses in college football.

Drayton actually coached the running backs in Gainesville, but in that offense it was often hard to tell the difference between a tailback and a guy like Percy Harvin.

Tressel Updates Spring Injuries
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? The 2010 season was a rough onefor defensive backs at Ohio State.

It seemed like every week another player in the secondary was going down with an injury, and unfortunately, the change in calendar year has not done much to reverse curse that seems to be plaguing the Buckeyes? defensive backfield.

?In Saturday's practice, Christian Bryant and Adam Griffin had minor injuries that may keep them for practicing,? OSU Head Coach Jim Tressel said Tuesday.

Tressel added that their recovery is expected to be ?full and fairly quick,? but the same cannot be said for fifth-year senior Donnie Evege.

?Unfortunately, we lost Donnie Evege for the season with an early spring injury,? Tressel said.

Ohio State football practice: Four videos featuring Braxton Miller, Terrelle Pryor, Dan Herron, Nathan Williams and others
Published: Tuesday, April 12, 2011
By Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer

COLUMBUS, Ohio - For the third time this spring, reporters were allowed to watch 30 minutes of an Ohio State practice. We also watched Saturday's scrimmage, though cameras weren't allowed for that. The Buckeyes are more than halfway through the 15 practices of spring, with the spring game coming up Saturday, April 23, at 1:30 p.m. at Ohio Stadium.

Here are some videos from Tuesday's practice window, which once again was forced indoors by rain. The players were in helmets, shells and shorts, not full pads, but that didn't stop defensive end Nathan Williams from leveling running back Dan Herron, as you can see in this first video.

Senior quarterback Joe Bauserman continues to work with the first team for the most part, though freshman Braxton Miller, who should still be in high school, continues to show that he has the arm and the legs to make a difference.

Buckeyes need to find answers at receiver

I will still be surprised if Miller is the starter for the first game of the season, but I certainly expect Miller to play, and maybe play a lot and start some later games, during Terrelle Pryor's five-game suspension. Here first Bauserman and then Miller throw swing passes during a drill.

Keep your eyes on these guys

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Just more than halfway through Ohio State's spring practices, some interesting story lines are emerging that don't involve quarterbacks.

Hard to believe, isn't it, with all the focus seemingly on who will replace Terrelle Pryor for the first five games this fall? But there are plenty of other intriguing players.

Now that reporters have been able to view about four hours of practice time since drills began March31, and with 10 days remaining before the spring game, we take a look at six players of particular interest.

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel on the quarterback battle and a player in the doghouse

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Jim Tressel would love it if one of the four quarterbacks looking to replace the suspended Terrelle Pryor for the first five games of the 2011 season jumped up and seized the job this spring. That hasn't happened yet.

NEWSOME LIMITED: Jon Newsome, who figured to be in the mix to start at strongside linebacker, hasn't participated in much of the practice time that reporters have been able to watch, and Tressel confirmed today that Newsome's reps have been limited. It's not because he's injured, but because he's in Tressel's doghouse.
"I've been known to have a doghouse, and Jonathan is in and out of it simply because we're not 100 percent sure he's been doing everything he needs to do to the best of his abilities," Tressel said. "I don't expect him to be in it long, but sometimes we have do what we think will help a young person learn."

Play of the Scrimmage
Braxton feels the rush, scrambles outside to his left.

Throws a bullet across his body 12 yds upfield to Verlon Reed.

Cash detonates Reed a moment later, sending the ball flying.

Bell snags the line drive on the fly and heads upfield.

Braxton races over to his convoy of blockers and jacks up Bell, ending the play.

The crowd went wild about 4 different times in one sequence.
The scrimmage was just ended when a monsoon briefly stopped by. They paused a few min to wait it out, then the lightning sent them racing home.

Be checking in this afternoon. The reporters should be getting back to their offices about now. Merih was also in attendance and will chime in with his observations. I'll have some as well once I get out of these wet clothes

Defense was truly dominant.

  • Baldwin had a huge day (2 TFL, 1 sack), and Hankins (many big stops and 3rd and short, 1 sack, 1 TFL).
  • Howard looked great again, Wood had some big hits but popped his shoulder out apparently and sat out the rest of the practice.
  • On offense, Graham looked good again but the receivers couldn't hold onto the ball...the receiving is starting to look troubling.
  • Braxton's hit on Bell was unreal. Cash had arguably the best day of anybody though...forced fumble, many impressive tackles and looked great in coverage.
  • Dionte Allen absolutely UNLOADED on Berry on a swing pass...brutal hit. Allen had a solid day.
  • Ohrian Johnson's coverage is improving...alot.
  • The defense just looked like silver bullets...lots of passion and lots of speed. I love what I am seeing from these guys so far. The DL was very active today, everybody got in on the action.
  • I am really like JT Moore off the edge...he has been pretty consistent in getting pressure.
  • That's all off the top of my head, I will hopefully have my recap up on The Lantern soon

http://www.elevenwarriors.com/2011/...port-ii-the-revenge-of-spring-practice-report

[ Still, his day was about par for the course for the QBs and WRs as a whole; the wide receivers dropped way more passes than anyone would find acceptable, couldn't find separation from any of the defensive backs, and guys like T.Y. Williams and Philly Brown did little to reassure the small crowd of gathered Buckeye fans that the team will be able to make do without the talents of DeVier Posey for the first five games of the year. I hate to sound like a broken record, but the TEs and the RBs are going to be critical components of the passing game, even if it's more out of necessity than any innate desire to get the ball to them through the air.]

Kind of scary that Chris Fields is not even getting mentioned.
[The defense played extremely well across the board, and the competition between Bradley Roby, Nate Oliver, and Dionte Allen for the second corner spot opposite Travis Howard is going to be something to keep tabs on as the season gets closer.]

Thought Dominic Clark was likely 2nd corner?
