Split: Will NIL give schools an advantage over OSU?

Does anything prevent Nike from basically sponsoring him at this point if he were to go to oregon?
This is my only concern with the rule changes. Does Nike promise him a ton of money? If not, then I believe we will have the bookend wrecking crew with him and Jack demolishing QBs across the country. I don't want to jinx us, but should we at least warm up the nanners?

I could be mistaken but I don't think NIL is at the point yet where companies can just start sponsoring recruits. Even when we get to that point I highly doubt Nike is going to throw money at recruits to go to one school and risk pissing off some of their other big school e.g. OSU.

Sounds like everyone’s super concerned about Nike. Last I saw, we still rock the swoosh on every jersey. Whatever revenue Oregon could reel in for him, you best believe OSU can find him an equal if not greater amount of opportunities. I’m more concerned about proximity playing into a tight knit family like that than I am with Nike tbh

Nike pays tens of millions of dollars annually to scores of schools for marketing partnerships and invaluable exposure. Getting involved in NIL with one institution explicitly would be a slippery conflict of interest slope.

I'm definitely not saying they couldn't survive long term alienating some of their biggest school partnership (UT-A, Ohio St, scUM, etc) if it got ugly, but I'd see that being something that they'd want to avoid altogether.

Not sure of the worries over Nike, I don't see them hitching their wagons to just one school. Especially a school who doesn't dominate their conference like OSU, Bama, OU, Clemson. And it's a company who supplies so many colleges. And even if Nike did want to throw their eggs in the Oregon basket, most of these schools could turn to Adidas anyway and not miss a beat. Especially since this generation of teenagers thinks the 3 stripes is cooler than the swoosh. And btw @jakenick06 , I believe that scUM(along with UNC, Florida and Oklahoma among others) is sponsored by Jordan, not Nike which throws another shoe company hat in the ring. If Nike wants to continue to maximize their revenue, then they'd stay out of favoring one school.
But when it comes to JTT, I see the position he plays, comfort with position coach and coaching staff in general, and ability to make him ready for the NFL are most important. NIL is nice, but the best kids at the end of the day know that millions are waiting for them in the NFL. And OSU has shown that not only can it prepare kids(especially DL) for the NFL, but most of our players have earned generous endorsements, whether nationally or on a regional level. And it also helps that wherever he may be drafted to, will have a large OSU alumni base in that city. and they will always look out for you off of the field and that will help with business interests.

Just a friendly FYI for anyone who cares...Jordan (and Converse) are brands that roll under the Nike umbrella. (Sorry - This kind of stuff puts a roof over my head and I can't help it).

Thanks for that. But wouldn't it matter if a school is a Jordan vs Nike vs a Converse school? Jordan doesn't provide clothing to OSU, Nike does, just like UNC wears Jordan and not Converse

Just saw the news. Obviously the tea leaves are looking good. JTT, Sawyer, Hall & Williams is a ridiculous DL haul. Can't believe Day is recruiting at this level, higher than Urban.

Not only would it be ridiculously talented, but also ridiculously balanced. The top two DEs in the nation, a top 100 overall ranked fairly polished DT in Hall that I project at 3-tech, and Williams is a 4 star massive 1-tech DT with massive upside. Checks every box you could in a DL class.

Phil Knight has never worried about what other schools think in the past, why would it matter in the future. He bends over backwards for his alma matter with support that no other school in the country comes close to receiving. I can't imagine that Oregon doesn't sell the crap out of their relationship with Nike and have for the past twenty years to recruits, and now with the rule changes coming, they have to be pitching it just like OSU is making their pitches.

NCAA NIL guidelines are not in place, but are expected to state that athletes can be compensated "at market value". Good luck defining exactly what that means per each athlete, but it should limit the ability of any booster to simply dump cash in a kids gym bag.

In any case, market value of a Buckeye is virtually by definition greater than market value of a Duck.

So what? He can't make more somewhere else. Ohio State football isn't going to be out spent[/B]. And they can 100% offer more in the way of long term success. Oregon feels like the latest boogey man that we're supposed to get all riled up over. If he picks them, it's not going to be because of Nike and NIL.
Absolutely agree. Other than Texas we don't have to worry about that really.
