Sparty vs. Ohio State, Sunday, 4:30 PM, CBS

Amazing what losing cancers like Loving and Lyle can do.
matta's teams were consistently solid defenders. the year-by-year efficiency numbers (points allowed per possession) usually shined. until lyle and loving, that is. as you note, loving's graduation and lyle's ouster immediately upgraded the defense. if forced to choose, give me a player who can defend over one who can score every single time. guys who defend and enjoy playing defense almost always "buy in" and are rarely problem-players. guys who get after it on defense rarely have out-sized egos.

They almost won a title with a bunch of guys described in the bold.

i wouldn't be so certain about that. last year's team got blown out in only one game: wisconsin. and then they gave that same wisconsin team a double-digit loss when everyone and his brother was expecting a poor turnout from the bucks. the frustrating thing about last season was not that we were thoroughly out-played. it was that we played to the level of our competition -- good or bad -- and didn't close out games. i mean, 12 of the 18 regular season conference games were decided by no more than 6 points. of the 12 losses to conference teams, 10 were decided by no more than 10 points.
For some reason I thought there were a couple more blowouts than that. Then again I blocked most of that season from my memory. Either way Holtmann has worked miracles with a roster held together by duct tape.
