Sparty +9.5 at tOSU (ov/un 127.5) Sat 6 ET, ESPN

The real sad thing is, Minny up in their barn isn't a gimme.

But if this sort of shooting carries over, Harvard could give the Buckeyes a game.

Sometimes I just wish the rotation had more players in it, but Coach Matta has his reasons.

I'm going to say this as politely as possible. Please get Smith out of the game. He's too small for what MSU is bringing to the table. He just got rebounded over because he didn't even jump for the ball, despite being in the paint (IN PERFECT POSITION FOR THE REBOUND)...

Smith is a GUARD! 6'4 with long arms, second best rebounder on the team.

DT and WB should be hitting the boards, they had 3 combined! You would think with all the missed shot's, they would have a heck of a lot more.

MSU played bad, except for Payne. We were just awful except for Craft.

A great philosopher once said "There's nothing that cleanses your soul like getting the hell kicked out of you." OK, maybe not a great philosopher but Woody Hayes' words ring true here. Matta, his assistants and his players have PLENTY of tape to watch in this one. It's a rarity when a team can shoot 25% and win... and tonight was not that once in a blue moon night.

Side note... Izzo's teams sure do cover up some of their deficiencies with hustle. They didn't shoot the best either (40%) and actually had more turnovers than Ohio State (17-16) but their hustle and physical play in the paint was the difference in this one.

Side note #2... I'll take Ed Hightower over "Primetime Teddy" any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Loved the ESPN announcers subtly calling him out and the Big Ten for their officiating antics.

Unlike recent past years, I think this team can lay an egg like this on any given night. There just aren't enough scorers on this team to overcome a bad night by one or more of the starters. that does not bode well in a single elimination tourney, if you know what I mean.

I'll ask again... How are we supposed to know if the team isn't filled with enough scorers?!

Did you watch today? I think that question was soundly answered.
That was UGLY. wow.

They played what? 7 people, maybe 8? And that was after the offense was already "broken".

IMO, the first sign of struggles from the starters, and they sit the bench for a while. Even if it is with 12 minutes to go in the 1st half, sit em... Hopefully then, they'll start to get a killer instinct in them. Right now, I'm just not seeing it.

Well all my channels are down...Along with me not being able to view page 21 in this thread

Matta has to realize this isn't last years team. We can't throw the starters out there & have them dominate . He's gonna have to mix it up a little bit and play to players strength

Let Shannon , Sam & Spoon get in off the bench and push the tempo & run for a few minutes. Add size to the front line and start Amir at the 5 , I thought he played pretty damn good at Kanas. I'm puzzled with him not getting any real minutes since then.

LAQUINTON ROSS

How long has he been with the team? It's time to get this kid on the on the floor playing big minutes , 6'8 on the perimeter that can create his shot for himself and others. Plus he's money from the 3 line , Something the team has been lacking all season long.

All this is a lot more dire with the play of Buford. Not sure what's going on with him , I'm hoping he gets all these kind of games out his system for the tourny but I'm not so sure

I agree, but that's never been Matta's style unfortunately...

I just don't understand Matta's style then. Does he want to win a title with all this talent? Or wear out down the stretch, win the B1G Title, then lose in the Sweet 16?

I'd prefer the first option, but it'll never happen without using the depth that he has.

The downside of not using the bench'..is the starters aren't afraid of losing PT for not hustling or Playing D..entitlement mentality..I'm assuming Dallas, David and Jon policed the practices and team last year. Thad is like me waiting for someone to step-up and LEAD..

Note how Izzo who is always in the final four was rotating players in and out like a hockey game

Lord have mercy.. THIS is how bad it's gotten in basketball? We refer to the normal rotation of players as "like a hockey game"?

It's worse than we thought. :ohwell:

I love what Matta has done and is doing at Osu overall, but does his style hold him back at times like this or is this just our youth showing through? This is just 1 loss in what is still a very good year so far, but with the showings lately I'm kinda wondering which is the bigger issue this year?
