USC will probably lose two games this year. One to a team that people would possibly expect like Cal, OrSU, or WSU. They will also lose one to a team that no one expects like UCLA, Hawaii, ASU, Oregon, or Washington.

What I saw was not a very good football team. I saw a very talented football team with a lot of pieces but not a very good team. The are vulnerable to the run, (VaTech had some success despite a weak O-line, and inexperienced backs. There zone had some huge holes in it that if VaTech's recievers could have caught the ball would have made the PI call irrelevant. Play Action also worked well, think how well it would have worked if the team had a GOOD running game. Overall I was pleased with the VT gameplan, but there execution was horrible.

Offensively USC is too impatient. They should have kept running the ball to #21, that was really the best thing they had. If it were not for Reggie Bush they would have lost the game on the offensive side of the ball. VT's DLine looked very slow to allow Leinhat (whom I understand has average speed at best) to easily scramble outside of the pocket.

I do not think we saw the #1 Team in the country last night. Next Saturday night on ESPN I think you will see who really should be ranked #1.

Its difficult to judge after the first game especially considering the turmoil USC has endured over the past 2 weeks. VT had a good game plan for USC...and USC made some great adjustments at half to contain Randall. USC will be ok in the long run but are probably not as dominate as anticipated.

Exactly. It will take a few games to know just how good/bad that VT team was, if you are USC.

All in all if I'm USC I look at the positive and say we put a bunch of freshman on a plane, flew to the east coast played mediocre at best versus a legit 1A team and still managed to scrape out a win. We have a lot of work to do but its better than a loss.

I would however be very concerned that we couldn't just line up and out play what will probably be a mid-tier ACC school. Being objective as possible, I would also remind myself we needed help from VT to win and ultimately it all came down to us exploiting the one glaring mismatch they could not handle.

As an OSU fan it reminded me of 1999 when we played UC at home. They were beating us early but we eventually won the game by a score that made everything look "ok". In truth all we did was send KenYon Rambo deep time after time and hit bombs to him because he was the one guy they just couldn't cover. We couldn't just line up and whip UC, we had to exploit the one athlete we had they simply couldn't match. Last night was very similar to that imo.

I don't think USC is in for anything near the nightmare we had in '99 but I do think they just gave hope to any team that they play this year because they showed they are just as vulnerable as anyone else. I guarantee the book on USC is already to make the freshman WR's beat you and take away Reggie Bush. They will play teams that have the athletes/scheme to do this to varying degrees.

As far as their schedule goes I know the Pac10 is weak and all but if last night wasn't a fluke and that's about all they really have, someone will get them.

Went to the Game

Yeah I went to the game, and I must say that Virginia Tech outplayed this team. There is no way USC shouldv'e won. Another thing is USC plays only one damn song from there band? Are they not that talented? Also I have a new hate for their fans as well. I was very surprised IMO about Tech's Defense. Yes they blew it against Reggie Bush but who wouldn't you know? Another thing is Tech lost not only cuz of those mistakes but because of the refs. You shouldv'e seen that place guys it was rocking with tech fans. Loud as hell and I'll give those fans credit. However when those calls would happen the air was jus It was electric and USC scored from 20 yards out each time they scored so they never really sustained a drive like Va Tech did. Tech took it to their defense and thats what impressed me because Tech's recievers are more inexperienced than USC. They only had 22 combines catches between them all. I just feel sickened about how Va Tech lost and USC IMO doesn't deserve to be ranked in the top 5. I'd like to See USC play Oklahoma or our Buckeyes if they can barely beat VA TECH.

How about playing a bowl game away from home? USC and UCLA have had the luxury for over a half century of playing the Rose Bowl in their home town. Try playing Michigan in Ann Arbor or Ohio State in Columbus in January.

I just read through this thread, and didn't see any mention of the blatant rub off by the USC receiver on their last TD pass. He practically threw his leg out to trip the guy, an obvious pick play and way worse than the call against VA Tech. All I know is we get OSU football in 5 days fellas - I can't wait!!!!

Someone else mentioned... sloppy game... yep... I thought both teams could have played a lot better... Reggie Bush Stepped up and took care of business, and that's what great teams will do in the crunch... have one guy beat you.

To be quite honest... Va Tech Lost because they couldn't execute int he 2nd half... Petie put a spy on Randall and made him throw.... and it was pretty ugly obviously. The USC O-line seemed iffy to me... they are going to see much more experience D-lines later on, so they better get everyone on the same page... Their D-Line looked liket hey Missed Udezi.... but got better once they kept Randall in the pocket.

If I were playing 'SC next week, I would put a spy on Bush, sell out to stop the run and make those WR's beat me... (I'm sure the WR's will get better, but that's what i would do If I were playing them tomorrow)

I don't know, it hasn't done much good for ucla.

Hawaii doesn't play USC this year

What's amazing is that USC looked very beatable and only lost 1 first place vote in the AP poll. I really hope this is because they haven't seen anybody else play yet. When other teams are more impressive, they need to go around the teams that aren't that great. The voter polls are 2/3 of the BCS now.

Voters have to adjust the rankings based on year-to-date performance each week. What happened last year should be meaningless. What the preseason rankings were should be meaningless. People bitch about the computer rankings, but they understand both of those concepts. Most of the media morons in the AP poll only move somebody down when they lose, and then whoever lost first ends up being the highest ranked 1-loss team.

They look at scores, don't see enough games, and then they're more worried about the NFL injury reports on Sunday mornings than in putting together an accurate college football poll.
I think the NCAA needs to send instructions to the voters.
