Observations on several statements that have been made here:

1. Eric Green (VA Tech #1) is an excellent DB & any team would be more than happy to have him on their roster.

2. Green was not matched up with Bush.

3. Randall was not a threat in the 2nd Half because USC used a spy on him, & a lot of the 2nd half sacks were plays where he had a run/pass option, but couldn't do either.

4. The PI call was stupid, as was the no-call facemask on the next play, but good teams don't lose based on one or two calls. Sure the momentum changed, but in my opinion Randall started losing his composure and throwing wild after that point.

5. The ACC is going to be good this year. I would not be suprised if neither Miami, nor FSU wins it.

6. USC should have no problem in the Pac-10, since they get Cal at home.

well we have both

Tressel miight throw in an option play to mess w/ everyone's head once in a while-scUM 02'-but he will never use it anywhere near the scale VT does.

Also, I was impressed with Jimmy Davis, the V-Tech d-lineman we recruited a few years back and almost got.

As for everyone screaming and crowing about USC's demise-it's the 1st game. Tibor is right. Leinart needs to get on the same page w/ his receivers and USCs o will improve. Their secondary does suck tho....that will hurt them in at least 1 Pac 10 game this year.

They're undefeated...

The saddest part of the whole experience for me last night was seeing the graphic on USC's schedule for the rest of the year. Pathetic. Playing in the Pac Ten is like having 10 Indiana games in a row.

It looks to me as if they probably will win out from here. Perhaps an inspired Notre Lame team can bite them on the butt toward the end of the season (but I highly doubt it). Otherwise, I think it's smooth sailing for these impostors.

The good news from this is that, after 10 games against cupcakes, they will crumble like a stale cookie when they face a tough team in a BCS Bowl Game. Unfortunately, I'm afraid we'll have to wait the whole season to see it.

Please!!! JT, don't lose this year, so you can have the honor of emasculating Petey and his prima donnas in front of the whole country, the way you did Coker, Winslow Jr. and McGahee.

My observations, for whatever they're worth:

USC was not as good as advertised, but they are still pretty damn good. Nonetheless, I still think they were lucky to win as comfortably as they did. With their schedule, I don't see anybody challenging them unless USC gives a game away.

Is Reggie Bush a stud? Yes. Did he do anything yesterday to impress me? Not really. Let's review. He rushed for 27 yards on 9 carries. Decidedely not impressive. I know he was splitting carries, but that's still only 3 ypc. Yes, he had 100+ receiving yards and 3 TDs, and on the surface that's impressive, but think about it some more. The first TD was that screen play. Roshown Parker may have been able to score on that play - that was Norm Chow's TD, it was a great call with VT bringing the kitchen sink. The second one was a product of some of the most awful coverage I've ever seen. I believe it was zone coverage, and there was one other guy who ran a fly besides Bush, and he was freakin' wide open too! Outside of that Green guy, their secondary is awful. On the third TD, the LB "covering" Bush fell down. I have no doubt that Bush is an excellent player, but yesterday was a great linescore, not a great performance. He doesn't have that kind of day against a top-40 defense.

Va. Tech is in real trouble. The team that played yesterday is not a team that can beat NC State, Miami, Maryland, Virginia, or possibly even West Virginia. If they slip up against any of their cupcakes, they won't even make it to the Whogivesacrap.com Bowl. They're lucky they don't have to play Free Shoes. Their secondary is weak, and will get torched regularly. They have to blitz to much to get even token pressure, and that only hurts their pass coverage further. Their main positive plays on offense were either broken plays, misdirection or draw plays, or passes to the TEs. A more disciplined defense, especially among the LBs, will put a stop to all of those. USC made the proper adjustment in that area in the 2nd half, and I'd bet taht their ACC foes have already made that adjustment.

USC on the other hand, will be a better team than they were yesterday. Combine that with their ridiculously easy schedule the rest of the way (Wazzu is the only team I think is within miracle-shot of playing with USC, and only because the game's in Pullman), and I'm gonna have to believe that USC will be the team the Buckeyes' end up facing in the Orange Bowl:wink2: .

Good reviews so far.....I thought the game was sloppy and that Leinart was not on the same page as well with his receivers. IT was the first game so I will give them some slack. BTW Leinart throws the fade as well as anyone I can remember...he seems to have great timing and really put just enough air under it to a receiver in stride so they can take it to the house. I thought Bush was great out of the backfield and it is tough for the backs as they split time and run a lot of one back sets as well. I think they wil be alright and I wouldn't count out Cal, Oregon or ND against them although they will be favored in every game.

USC defense was suspect on the edges with bootleg and playaction passing and the option at times. When Tech ran inside or led the the backs between the tackles the USC DL and LB's were all over them. They looked very strong keeping things inside but not as laterlally fast outside in pursuit. Grooetegood (spelling) and the other DE AA candidate are as good as advertised.

Tech's tackling was very poor to say the least. I think White ran a counter to the left and broke it for a first down. I counted SIX mistackles behind the line of scrimmage and then USC moved the chains when it was 2nd and 6 or something. Tech's Defense is really poor with the exception of the corner #1 who could start anywhere in the COUNTRY!

All in all USC is not the same team they were last year but we weren't either and were a Michiagn win away from the Sugar Bowl.

From what I saw last night Norm Chow used the "NCAA College football 2005" game plan. 4 Big Plays (3 by Bush and 1 by the referees) is all that they had last night. I saw little consistency with their offense, and a good defense will be in the backfield all night long against Leinhart (on a quick side note, did you all know that he had bad vision as a kid :bonk: :sleep2: ESPN only made note of it 1100 times). They seemed to have a "when all else fails, send Bush deep" offensive scheme. This will not work down the road. Jarrett has shown alligator arms syndrome up to this point, but keep in mind this is just off of one game.

Secondly, they had better work on protecting the middle of the field against the pass. Va Tech could have passed the ball all night long right down the middle if they wanted to, unfortunately they had some terrible passes and dropped catches.

I will acknowledge that USC is young, but at this moment they seem a tad overrated. Time will tell if they can run the *ahem* gauntlet.
