I figure SC will "sell out" to prevent Pryor from running because the perception is that running is his primary weapon whereas his skills as a passer are his weakness. As a consequence, I'd expect designed runs to fail to produce much of anything. Now, that said, I agree with you that Pryor has the skills to gain yards even when the D knows what's coming, and the better the blocking the better the chances (as you mention). But, the point I'm making is that SC is probably thinking "Lets make him beat us with his arm" and if Pryor runs in to a buzz saw that's specifically looking for him all day long, OSU is in trouble.

I think if USC "sells out" to stop Pryor's running they're in for a long night, provided our blocking give Pryor some time to throw...completing his first few passes will be key in keeping USC defenders from wholesale blitzes. If he can burn their first blitz with a long screen or a completion to--you guessed it--a TE, then they'll be more reluctant to "sell out".

But as for some folks' insinuation that USC's defensive speed negates Pryor's running, that's way off the mark.

WeareSC reports they lost a freshman linebacker due to a heart condition today.
* There was some unfortunate news out of the Trojan football office today as a genetic heart condition will end the playing career of incoming freshman linebacker Frankie Telfort:

It's all in the Telfort thread...

Reminds me of a story... good buddy of mine was coaching in NE Ohio... His team lost to a team with an outrageously fast and big RB... afterwards I was walking back to the locker with him.. and a parent screams "we would have won if you would have stopped him".. he turns to me and quietly says "why didn't I think of that... I had a ton of 210 lb backs with 4.3 speed to practice against this week"

Wonder how many 6'6" 235 lb QBs with 4.3 speed USC has on their scout team?

I would guess the closest thing they have is Mays? Alson, reports have Terrelle listed at 240 now; must have opted for the Freshman 5 instead of the 15.

Just watching the Rose Bowl replay on ESPNU. I hope USC's defense is nowhere near as good as they were last year. I mean, seriously. They lost a ton of starters and hopefully they won't be able to cover every inch of the field AND pressure the QB like they did in the Rose Bowl.

The biggest difference between USC and their opponents is execution. I'm sure part of it is mental, but USC seems to always have the right route, the right block, the right hold, and the right timing. I guess some of it is really good coaching. They execute.

Or they cheat . (Had to.)

EDIT: Taylor Mays is a walking helmet to helmet penalty. He obviously learns from the best (Rey Maualuga).

Gotta love it! After all, football is a CONTACT SPORT. As a fan, I will take those penalties every game!

This game may be a coming out party for Jake Stoneburner.:)

Over the course of the last three days I have watched three USC games from last year.

Oregon
Oregon State
Penn State

Count me as UNDERWHELMED by Taylor Mays.

There's a reason he's still at USC. Don't get me wrong, he would have been drafted in a heartbeat, but he's got some stuff to work on. You actually have to provide support in coverage rather than just looking for the kill shot.

Plus, those cost you $50,000 a pop in the League. In college, you get dumbass fans like, eh hem, and ESPN celebrating it. Win at all costs, right Troy?

I wish the players could carry guns. If someone tries to tackle you, BOOM!, blow their fuckin' brains out of the back of their helmet. Like in The Last Boyscout. It could be a penalty if the guy doesn't die on the field or some shit.

Seriously? I hope you know how selfish that sounds. There's a reason it's a penalty: player safety. Especially with a guy like Mays. His size, speed, and recklessness could get someone seriously injured.

Including himself with a neck injury. [sarcasm] But what the heck, football is a contact sport. I guess they will take those injuries as well. [sarcasm]
