in their defense though, I imagine 3/4 of their fan base consists of bandwagon jumpers who don't know [censored] about college football, so I don't really mind too much that they aren't showing up in large numbers

But until the season rolls around, the news is good enough for me. There are Dodger games to go to, beaches to relax on, oceans to swim in, etc. And of course lurking message boards at 4am when I should be sleeping.

Welcome, its nice to see a fan who doesn't think that the next guys are going to be immediately better than the All-Americans they replaced.Well fortunately a lot of the guys aren't entirely green... quite a few of them played in at least one game last year, and many started a few games as well. I think the big one that people are hoping for big results out of is Everson Griffen. Supposedly he's had a great spring camp and has been training pretty well. He was starting at defensive end last year for a few games, but I think they pulled him after the Oregon St. loss. The guy has a lot of promise but has had some motivation/discipline problems, we'll see how that goes.
As for the rest of it, we're getting some guys back from injuries, like Shareece Wright, who is incredible at CB and hopefully will be able to play the entire season. There's a lot of talk about how good Galippo is at middle LB, which is Maualuga's old spot. Supposedly he's got the talent to be just as good, but I'm doubting we get somebody who hits like Rey used to. Hopefully Galippo wraps up better to make up for it We'll see how Smith and Morgan pan out... they both had playing time last year but of course that all changes when they're THE guys at linebacker. Main reason I'm excited about them is they're even faster than last year's LBs, and they weren't too shabby.
Anyway, there's lots to say and lots that I've read or seen, we'll have to see how it all comes together in the fall. It's been a bit quiet for the summer so far, hoping to get some more news soon. Spring was looking very good though.
I was just messing around. It's not like it's the first time I've heard that. And I wasn't saying it like I needed pity
I don't know, man... you sure? The beaches here are pretty nice! I will admit that I do check scores and stuff on my phone at the beach though.
I won't say this is an unusual story for out here, because it's not. I won't disagree even for a second -- college football is not part of the culture out here. I wish it was, but it's obviously not. I've been lucky to find a lot of fans around here and I never have any trouble finding people to watch games with or talk to about sports. But yeah, it's not like you can just turn to the guy next to you and start talking about the game yesterday, or anything like that. You definitely have to find the people who are interested. It's a shame you had such a hard time. But I'm not surprised.

BUCKYLE;1500425; said:Eh, I like the beach and all, but I'm glad I was born in a place that places a higher value on CFB than they do out there. I'm sure I'd have grown up differently had I been born on the west coast...and I'm glad I wasn't.
As we all know, its all up to the DL this season. We got pushed around pretty good by USC younger OL last year. If the DL can play even better than it did at the end of the year last year that will go a long way in keeping Mr. McKnight at bay.MD Buckeye;1497001; said:You all are forgetting stopping Joe McKnight.....12 for 105 (8.8 avg). If we cant slow him down, we may be in for another long night.
DaddyBigBucks;1500359; said:Methomps hates when I bring this up. He insists that my experience is a sample size of one. But everyone I know who is a fan of another school but has lived in SoCal has had a similar experience.
I left SoCal the same month the Buckeyes won the National Championship. I lived there for 5 years, and I only found a college football fan in my last month there. Coincidentally (or not), that was the end of Pete Carroll's first good year there; and it was only one guy.
This wasn't for lack of trying to find someone to discuss football with. I had a job where I was travelling all over SoCal from Santa Barbara to the Mexican Border; and for 5 years people looked at me like I had 3 heads whenever I brought up college football, even if it was October or November.
And not to belabor the point, but others had this experience too. SanClementeBuck and others could testify. We would watch every Buckeye Game at the National Sports Grill (location since moved to Dave & Busters). Everyone there would report the same experience. The only people you could find that cared about college football were transplants who still cheered for their alma mater, most of those being fellow Buckeyes at the Game Watch.
All things considered, I loved living in Orange County. It is a great place to live. But when USC isn't a juggernaut, you cannot find a fan there.
They don't come close to Da U or Notre Dame for the world-championship of bandwagon fan bases; but the true fans are truely hard to find.
