Some early depth chart pondering

QB: Mitch Mustain OR Aaron Corp, Garrett Green, Matt Barkley (FR)
RB: Stafon Johnson AND Joe McKnight AND CJ Gable, Marc Tyler
FB: Stanley Havili, Adam Goodman, DJ Shoemate, Simione Vehikite (FR)
FL: Ronald Johnson, Travon Patterson, Brice Butler, De'Von Flournoy (FR)
SE: Damian Williams, David Ausberry, Brandon Carswell
TE: Anthony McCoy, Blake Ayles, Rhett Ellison
LT: Charles Brown, Tyron Smith
LG: Jeff Byers, Khaled Holmes, Martin Coleman
C: Kris O'Dowd, Michael Reardon, John Martinez (FR)
RG: Alex Parsons OR Zack Herberer, Kevin Graf (FR)
RT: Butch Lewis OR Nick Howell, Matt Kalil

bold - 2008 starter

Losses - QB Mark Sanchez, WR Patrick Turner, FB Matt Hillier, TE Jimmy Miller, OL Matt Meyer, OL Daniel Campbell

Does the bold mean that the player started at least one game in 2008? There's some liberal use of the word "starter" here, as you're returning 13 on offense according to this post.

As an example, Boom Herron started several games for OSU at tailback this year. Thus, his name would appear in bold in an OSU version of your table above. However, to imply that we are returning our "starter" at tailback next year would be beyond misleading.

The RBs were a special situation where they were all co-starters. Stafon Johnson had the most carries, but CJ Gable officially 'started' all but one game (McKnight started that one), and McKnight probably would've had the most carries were it not for his injuries. Few would consider Gable our top back. I think the more important point is that the position is filled by a returning starter, rather than what number started.

As for RG, Heberer started the first three games, missed three games with injury, and then returned in a backup role to Parsons. At RT, Butch Lewis started the first five games, missed a game with illness, and then came back as a backup to Howell before starting the UCLA game. Howell started six games.

Ronald Johnson started a game and was always heavily involved, but I didn't list him as a starter.

What's it like having that kind of depth along the offensive line?? :roll2:

Is there some relative confidence that Mustain will be the #1 QB going into the season? Is Corp a legitimate threat??

The oline depth is the brightside of various injuries the last two years. The QB competition is wide open, although each QB's fanboys will tell you otherwise (as clear from the discussion that got split off earlier). Mustain definitely had the lead going into last year, but I think Corp took better advantage of his chances over the course of the year (beginning with Sanchez's knee injury).

I would say Mustain is the favorite, but the race is much closer than it was in Booty-Sanchez or Sanchez-Mustain-Corp. It is as close as its been since 2003 when Leinart beat our Hance and Cassel. Of course, the 2003 race brings up the question of Barkley. Barkley is a freshman, but he is enrolled now and will participate in spring ball. My gut tells me that it is just too soon, but we'll see. I think Sanchez leaving early cost Barkley a year by bringing the competition before he has a chance to learn the system. We'll see.

From what I have been hearing, Terrelle Pryor has this game circled and is ready to put OSU back in the NCG talks again.

What do you guys project our offense to look like? I'm thinking lots of shotgun and lots of i-formations. USC admitted last year that a scrambling QB has been their kryptonite in the past, so I wonder how that factors in to our preparations.
Defensively, it will be interesting to see how our D-Line matches up with USC's offensive line. Their running attack scares the crap out of me. They pretty much lose nobody from that running game and we were completely punished by it last year. Do we put more speed in there to counter or do we simply load the box and make a new QB beat us? Either way, I don't like that matchup and I'm afraid we will have to depend on our offense to make it happen.

8pm start time may be past Tressel's bed time, but I'm positive that Buckeye City will be hoppin all weekend and the 'Shoe will be electric once more!!!:oh:
