Matta not talking about the X-factor
Ohio State could face Xavier in second round

COLUMBUS - Top-ranked Ohio State got just about everything it wanted Sunday. Coach Thad Matta did not.
Moments after winning the Big Ten tournament title, the Buckeyes picked up a No. 1 seed and found out they would have to travel only 160 miles from campus to play Central Connecticut State in Lexington, Ky., on Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
But what could be an uncomfortable matchup might await Matta in the second round.

XU well aware OSU on horizon
But first they must handle BYU, fend off selection critics
BY DUSTIN DOW | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Justin Doellman said "you could hear a pin drop" at Sean Miller's house Sunday night while Xavier waited about 45 excruciating minutes for its name to be called as one of the NCAA Tournament teams.
When it finally happened, everyone in the room realized immediately the magnitude of where the Selection Committee placed Xavier in the 65-team bracket.
The No. 9 seed Musketeers (24-8) need only to beat No. 8 seed Brigham Young in Lexington Thursday to potentially force a second-round game against their former coach, Thad Matta and No. 1 seed Ohio State Saturday.

Oden and Buckeyes, roaring Tigers highlight South

Last Update: Mar 12, 2007 12:39 AM

Ohio State hasn't been to the national title game since 1962, but freshman sensation Greg Oden may have something to say about that.
Oden, who has been a force inside all season for the Buckeyes, has helped Ohio State (30-3) already to the Big Ten Tournament title and now the top seed in the South.

Although fans have encouraged Oden to return for another season, it's likely he'll make the jump to the NBA. However, before then he'll try to help Ohio State to its second national title, joining the 1960 team that featured John Havlicek.

The Buckeyes, whose 1999 Final Four appearance was stricken from NCAA records due to rules violations under head coach Jim O'Brien, will tangle with Northeast Tournament winner Central Connecticut State on Thursday in Lexington.

Overall, OSU still happy
Big Ten tourney titlist doesn't feel slighted by NCAA committee

March 12, 2007
BY LACY J. BANKS Staff Reporter
In rolling through the Big Ten tournament, top-ranked and top-seeded Ohio State looked like a No. 1 team in every sense -- except, apparently, to the NCAA tournament selection committee.

While the Buckeyes secured a No. 1 seed with their 66-49 victory Sunday over Wisconsin at the United Center -- adding the school's first conference tournament title to the regular-season championship -- they were ranked third among the four No.1s, behind defending NCAA champion Florida and North Carolina.

Four things I think about . . .

Monday, March 12, 2007

THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
1. Ohio State wasn't named the overall No. 1 seed, coming in as No. 3 behind Florida and North Carolina. But the Buckeyes couldn't have asked for an easier bracket. Clearly, there were six top teams - Florida, UNC, OSU, Kansas, UCLA and Wisconsin. The Bruins and Badgers wound up as No. 2 seeds, but neither joined Ohio State in the South. Georgetown, with a huge and athletic frontline, is another scary No. 2 seed, but the Hoyas wound up in the East with Carolina. That left the Buckeyes with No. 2 Memphis and No. 3 Texas A&M as their main challengers. Virginia, probably overseeded at No. 4, and No. 5 Tennessee, a one-point loser in Columbus, are the likely Sweet 16 matchups. That's a very workable road to Atlanta.

No doubt about it: Buckeyes are Big Ten's best

March 12, 2007
By Tim Cronin Staff writer
CHICAGO -- Ohio State is among the more unassuming dominant basketball teams in recent Big Ten history.
Unlike Illinois' crew of two and three seasons ago, there's little bluster or color in its game.
Unlike Tom Izzo's title squads at Michigan State, there's not a sense of entitlement when the Buckeyes walk onto the court.
Ohio State just gets the job done. Time after time -- all but three times this season to be exact -- the Buckeyes have prevailed. Sunday at the United Center was no different, as the top-ranked Buckeyes scored a 66-49 victory over third-ranked Wisconsin to capture the Big Ten Tournament title and, as it turned out, the top seed in the NCAA's South Region.

Ohio St. takes fresh approach
Monday, March 12, 2007

Favorite: Ohio State. Although the top seed in the South Region may lack experience, the Buckeyes make up for that with plenty of talent, including sensational freshmen Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr.
The 7-foot-1, 280-pound Oden is a dominant force at both ends of the floor while Conley averages 6.4 assists. Senior shooting guard Ron Lewis provides the veteran leadership. And it's not as if freshman-led teams haven't won this event.

What is everyone thinking about Louisville in this bracket...

They good a pretty good draw with playing Stanford at 1240 in the morning...That is 940 on the west coast and Stanford could still be sleep walking at that time.

They also get to play in Lexington which is in the same state, so expect them to have a huge following there...

Then they will more than likely get aTm...Most seem to like them to go to the elite 8 and maybe a final four after a match up with us, b/c they will be in SA. But here is the thing, it will basically be like a home game for the Ville' and once they got healthy they have been playing great basketball. They have a frosh pg just like a ton of teams this year in Edgar Sosa. They have some good size with Padgett, Clark, Character, and Williams...They have a great coach with Pitino...Also Juan Palacios should be back for the tourney as he hasnt played the last couple games due to injury...

I really don't think it is out of the question that we might see Louisville in the elite 8...

I don't like Louisville and I don't like Pitino. Also, I don't care what time it is on the West Coast, the guys from Stanford are smart enough to figure that out. I just have a strong distaste for Pitino and it will probably cost me points on Yahoo.

They also talk about Louisville being so close to Lexington but not much was said about UT being a fairly easy drive to Lexington.

have you ever played a sport? its very easy to come out flat after a long trip, especially if you are playing in the morning.

There isn't much difference between driving to Lexington and flying to San Antonio. It isn't like they are taking the red eye to LA or anything like that. I'm sure they will travel the afternoon before the game and have a good night sleep before the game.
