Source: Tennessee's Pearl dismisses Crews, Smith for failed drug tests

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee sophomore forward Duke Crews and sophomore guard Ramar Smith are being dismissed from the team.

A source close to the Vols' program told ESPN.com's Chris Low that multiple failed drug tests led to the pair's dismissal.

"They did a lot of positive things in two years, but we have very, very high expectations for student-athletes on and off the court," Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl said before the team's end-of-season banquet, which was not attended by the two players.

Pearl said the two players did not meet his expectations after they were given every opportunity to succeed and instead will transfer to another school, though he did not specify where.

Contd...

Good for Pearl. He always struck me as a Bobby Bowden type where Crews and Smith's only punishment would be coming off the bench against southwest Memphis State Christian academy of Sacred Heart.

I'm guessing multiple is more than 5 though.

considering they are athletes, and supposedly maintain a healthy body, it's surprising that they had traces in them during their test. That is assuming they didn't abuse.

what this means is that they were fat as a lineman with lots of stuff for the THC to adhere too, or they blaze all day every day.....

Pearl is still a scary individual.... regardless of doing the right thing!

I wonder how many times is multiple:(

This is the SEC so that is a fair question. Multiple offenses has to be at least four or more.

Re: Police did not charge Crews, but the News Sentinel reported at the time that he had failed a drug test. Saturday's News Sentinel said that Tennessee's substance abuse policy mandates dismissal after a fourth positive for marijuana.
