Smith in ring of honor?

If ---i mean when Smith wins the heisman and lets say we win the N.C game should tOSU put his name in the ring of honor. I think he should get his name put up there as soon as possible. What does everyone else think?

Ring of honor?

You mean the retired jersey numbers, that are displayed in the stadium?

The university has set rules on who can have their jersey retired. The main stipulation is the player had to have won the Heisman. This is true with all numbers that have been retired, with the exception of Chic Harley.

If/When Troy wins the Heisman, he will have his number retired. But another stipulation is the player can't have his number retired until 5 years after he leaves the school.

So assuming he does win it (We know he will, but I'm just saying), he won't have his number retired until atleast 2011, at the earliest.

The university will wait 6-8 years.

How many years was Eddie in the NFL before they retired his number?

Eddie had his retired in 2001

I was a little off on what the player had to win, I thought it was just the Heisman, I guess these other awards count too...........

To have a number retired, a player must have graduated from Ohio State, or have been in good academic standing upon departure from OSU, in the case of leaving early for a professional career. He also must have won the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, the Walter Camp Award, the Associated Press Player of the Year Award, the Football Writers Player of the Year Award, or the American Football Coaches Player of the Year Award.

Smith deserves to be there eventually. Eddie quite frankly doesn't. He had one great year and got the Heisman. Orlando Pace was amazing for 3 years and possibly one of the greatest OL ever to play college football. As was Jim Parker. Jack Tatum was also 10 times the player Eddie was.

Your joking right?

He makes valid enough points, though barbed a bit more than most of the board's liking, as per usual. To think Eddie George desrves to be up there more than Orlando Pace, Jack Tatum, or Jim Parker is a farce. Naturally, it was because Eddie played a skill position and won a high-profile award.

No. You can think of 5 Buckeyes easily who had greater careers than Eddie. Eddie just happened to play a position which allowed him to win a Heisman. He wasn't even the best player on that 1995 team.

From a prely football standpoint you are quite right. That said, tOSU would run out of #'s if they retired every legendary players jersey upon the completion of an amazing career. The Heisman seems as good a criterion as any to limit the # of retired jerseys. O-linemen are the unsung heroes of football-they get worked the hardest, screamed at the most, and appreciated the least for their accomplishments.
