Smith in ring of honor?

Win or lose the national championship game, Troy's number is going up there. It should be up there just because of what he did on the field. But he also became a leader off the field, graduated, and became everything you want an Ohio State Buckeye to be when he leaves the university.

He is the greatest Buckeye in the history of The Game.
He is a Heisman Trophey winner (along with likely many other awards).
He is a Senior Captain.
He broke many OSU QB records and even without what happens on Jan 8, he at very least had the best season an Ohio State QB has ever had, if he isn't the best Ohio State QB ever.

I was born in 1982, and I think he's the best Buckeye in my lifetime...and we still get to see him play one more time!

I agree with a lot of this but I wouldn't look for his name up there for a few years. Nor should it be right away

I agree that #10 will go up there in a few years, and with all your comments.

I had to read your post carefully, in order to make sure that your words still allowed Archie to be at the top of the list of all-time Buckeye football players. I see that they do, since I can tell in the first statement that you mean the best overall career performer in tOSU-TSUN games.

Ring of Honor? I thought the stadium was a Horseshoe? How do you get a "ring" of honor from that? :wink2:

One of the interesting things about a place like Ohio State is that you can rattle off probably 50# guys that have come through this program that would have their numbers retired at 90% of the other programs. I know an honor like this has to be very exclusive, but it is a shame that a players that don't play "skill" positions get left out by these criteria. Players like Tatum, Parker, and Pace were players that helped revolutionize their positions.

Eddie had his retired in 2001

I was a little off on what the player had to win, I thought it was just the Heisman, I guess these other awards count too...........

To have a number retired, a player must have graduated from Ohio State, or have been in good academic standing upon departure from OSU, in the case of leaving early for a professional career. He also must have won the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, the Walter Camp Award, the Associated Press Player of the Year Award, the Football Writers Player of the Year Award, or the American Football Coaches Player of the Year Award.

Well, I guess if he just wins all of those, there won't be any doubt, eh?

Smith will have his name up there, that is almost a lock.

I think that Pace should have the same fate. How many lineman in their careers finish 4th in the heisman, win 2 Lombardi awards and an Outland trophy? Did I mention that he is the only the 2nd OSU lineman to ever start his first game as a true freshman? That resume is impressive enough for me.........

If Troy leads the Bucks to an NC win over Southern Cal, you can bet the house that they'll retire his number when the Trojans come to the Shoe - regardless of any "five year rule".
If they waive any rule they have , IMO that would be a great disservice to the others already there or to come.
