Smith in ring of honor?

Whoa! Time out. A lot of you want to put Troy in the ring of honor right now or after the NC game? That isn't right at all.
Not taking anything away from Troy at all. He isn't the best player we have ever had even.
Archie had two Heisman's and never lost to tsun in 4 years. Look how long it was before his was retired. The ring of honor is for people who have made tremendous contributions.
If we start resorting to "instant" gratification by inserting players as soon as their career is over, or without letting time decide a players full contribution we could be reducing the value of the honor. As well as possibly dishonoring those who have already been honored.
Are Troy's contribution's equal to Archie's ? Or Woody's? they and the others were not inducted because of the awards they won alone, but of their total contribution to tOSU.
Only time will tell.

when to put a player in is totally a matter of judgment. in my judgment, if Troy wins the Heisman and QBs us to a natl title he's in. that dishonors no one -- it says he's one of the greatest Buckeyes ever. who can argue with that?

others judgment may vary, and that's okay. but I'll take him as soon as the final gun sounds on Jan 8. that is what a national championship + 3 beat downs of scUM + a Heisman + his character mean to me. if the ring is for those who have made "tremendous contributions" and what Troy has done isn't a tremendous contribution I'd like to know what is!

Are we really going to talk about the amount of time that passed between a great player's last game and the moment their number was retired? If so, the only person worth mentioning in the discussion is Chic Harley.

It's a pointless discussion anyway. We did not start retiring numbers until well after any of our current Heisman winners had moved on. We have no system, policy or even precedent that requires or even suggests that we wait a certain amount of time before a player's number is retired.

Now that we are going to have a player win the Heisman after we have started retiring numbers; if the University wants to establish a set waiting period, now is the time to decide on it. Whatever precedent (or new policy) they set with Troy will be what we can expect in the future. No existing precedent applies in any meaningful way.

The reason it took so long to put Archie up there is because we didn't even start retiring numbers until what, '99-00? The other four Heisman winners were done shortly after.

Interesting stuff from Chic's Wikipedia page:

Ohio State began honoring players by retiring their numbers in 1999. Jersey numbers were more fluid in Harley's era, changing from game to game, but the University decided to honor Harley by retiring the final number he wore for Ohio State, #47.[6] The ceremony was held at halftime of a game on October 30, 2004. Ironically, that number was worn by Harley in the only collegiate game he lost. Many believe it would have been more appropriate to retire #10, which was the number Harley wore while defeating Michigan.

I move that we do not retire #10. :p

Putting Troy in the ring of honor, however, is another matter entirely.
