So you're telling us that these kids smoking pot in the dorms never drive anywhere while impaired. They don't ever get the late night munchies and drive to maybe Taco Bell or Hound Dogs. I find that very hard to believe.
if you live in a dorm on campus, and you have a car, the only place where you can park it is way over on west campus. getting to your car is a half-hour ordeal, sometimes longer. you have to walk to the bus stop, wait for the bus, then sit there as the bus sloooooooowly meanders its way through campus, before eventually stopping at the west campus parking lot, which is far away from everything.
conversely, there are many restaurants located within a five minute walk from the dorms. when these kids get the munchies, they simply walk to the taco bell.
kids in the osu dorms rarely drive anywhere, unless it is to go home or to visit friends at a different college for the weekend.
if you drink alcohol, it's possible that you might drive drunk. does this mean that drinking alcohol should be illegal? no, because simply consuming it is one thing, and engaging in dangerous behavior under the influence of it is another. if skeete was driving around high and got caught, i would have no sympathy for him whatsoever. hell, even if he got caught simply with possession, i wouldn't have any sympathy, because while i don't agree with the law, i agree that you have to be prepared for the consequences. but when you get duped into doing something that the overwhelming majority of students would've done, even the non-smoking ones...i think it's unfairly harsh.
i also don't think that doss will really care if people are "dissapointed" in him. he worked hard and gave his soul to the Buckeyes. if he chose to occasionally partake in an activity which didn't harm anyone else, who are these others that can cast their moral indignation upon him? he also might not even admit to it, as he's probably well aware of the trouble that could land him in.
i agree that athletes only have themselves to blame if they are caught using it, and should be prepared to deal with the consequences, even though i disagree with the law. however, you can't expect athletes to be totally isolated from it....it is such a common thing in college that unless you hole yourself up in a wall, you will be around it and you will know people that use and/or sell. Even if you are a good person that stays totally clean, you will be around it, and you can be just as easily duped as Skeete was.
