I am painfully new to Simcity. I played sparingly 15 years ago and dabbled rarely ever since.

How do you guys get started with roadways? It sounds like traffic is a major challenge. Is there one type of road you prefer to use that is easily upgradeable later to a six lane avenue?

Do you try to avoid having intersections on your main Avenue to the highway? It seems like it would help traffic flow to have occasional avenues running perpendicular to your primary one, then have those cross street avenues connect to your city blocks and smaller roads.

From what i have read, there isn't a good solution???

there are two types of roads, avenues and roads. Each has 3 versions (low, med, and high density for roads and med, high, and one with trolley tracks). Road cannot be upgraded to avenues and avenues cannot be downgraded to roads.

The key is using avenues a fair amount, especially where you think there will be high traffic and places you actually want big buildings (road type determines max density). You also don't want too many intersections. I was able to improve traffic by eliminated some intersections.

As for an intersection out of town, I didn't have an issue because that first intersection took people to either a subdivision (it actually turned into my ghetto because I didn't built any parks there at first) or the industrial area. Commercial seems to drive a lot of traffic, so I guess as long as you don't built commercial on the edge of town I don't think that first intersection is a big deal. Either that or don't make an intersection that feeds to the middle of your town (in other words, arced road that ends up going through the middle).

To this, as I stated earlier, you will get traffic jams eventually no matter what you do. The best thing to do is a fair amount of avenues and limit the intersections, especially in commercial areas. You will also want to place fire, police, and medical away from traffic jam spots. Of course if there is an issue at that specific spot, there isn't much you can do about it but just hope (there are also preventative measures for health, fire, and police that can help reduce issues in the town so you won't need them to respond to problems as much).
