SG Michael Redd (NBA All Star, Olympic gold medalist)

More minutes for Redd?
By Tom Enlund of the Journal Sentinel
April 6, 2011

Miami ? There?s a good chance that guard Michael Redd will play increased minutes when the Bucks take on the Miami Heat Wednesday night at American Airlines Arena.

Redd has averaged 7.8 minutes in five games since he has returned from a knee injury including a four-minute stint in Tuesday?s loss to Orlando. Coach Scott Skiles did not want to increase Redd?s minutes against Orlando since it was the first game of a back-to-back situation. But now, he sees an opportunity to play Redd more since the Bucks will have a day off before they play at Detroit Friday.

?With a back-to-back ?it kind of defeats the purpose of building his minutes up if I played him more minutes (against Orlando) and then less (against Miami),? said Skiles. ?So just try and keep it the same, and then (against Miami) turn him up. Then we?ll have a day off and then again (more minutes) over the weekend. So that?s kind of what we?re thinking right now.?

Kennedy: Michael Redd Vows He'll Return to Form
By: Alex Kennedy
Last Updated: 4/7/11

Michael Redd no longer takes anything for granted. He knows that every game could be his last and that's why he savors every minute of action. From the moment he puts on his Milwaukee Bucks' jersey to the moment he leaves the arena, Redd is enjoying himself and appreciating his surroundings.

That's what thirteen months away from the game will do to a player. After tearing his ACL and MCL last January, Redd underwent surgery and endured a brutal rehabilitation process. There were setbacks and critics wondered if he would ever step foot on an NBA court again, but he never had any doubts.

Now, after the grueling stretch, Redd is back on the floor for the Bucks. He's shaking off the rust that is bound to accumulate after more than a year away from the game, but he's contributing as a reserve. While his minutes have been limited, he couldn't be happier to be back.

"It's just phenomenal," Redd told HOOPSWORLD. "It's phenomenal just to be on the court, to be respected and to be back with my peers again. I love playing basketball and when it's taken away from you, you tend to appreciate it even more. Not to say that I didn't appreciate it before, but when you don't play for such a long time, you just miss it even more."

Rather than undergoing his rehabilitation in Milwaukee, Redd received permission from the team to workout with his personal therapist at Ohio State University. He felt that returning home would help him return to full strength and ensure that he didn't become a distraction to the team.

"Even though I wasn't here, I knew that I needed to get healthy for the betterment of the team," Redd said. "I knew I needed to be with my therapist and be in Columbus to get better. They all understood that and the organization was terrific. Everybody was supportive ? my teammates, management, coaches ? they all understood I needed to get right, especially this second time around. I needed to get my knee right."

Milwaukee's Michael Redd trying to regain form on rebuilt knees: Cleveland Cavaliers Insider

The Bucks' Michael Redd, left, guards the Cavaliers' Semih Erden during the first half Saturday in Milwaukee.

MILWAUKEE ? This is training camp for former Ohio State star Michael Redd of the Milwaukee Bucks.

After helping the U.S. Olympic team win a gold medal in Beijing in 2008, Redd missed the final 48 games of the 2009-10 season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and then missed the first 71 games of the 2010-11 season with a torn ACL in his right knee. He returned eight games ago.

"I'm in the middle of training camp for me, playing and getting used to playing again," he said before the Bucks played host to the Cavaliers on Saturday night in Bradley Center. "It's just a joy, it really is, to come back from two ACLs. To be part of this great league again is an honor.

"I was absent from the game for 16 months," he said. "Just getting used to the speed again. Trying to find your rhythm. Trying to find your way. Much as we all don't like training camp as much, you need it. I'm doing all that right now."

Redd said it will take time before he returns to form.

"The organization has been great, easing me back in -- five minutes a game, seven minutes a game -- getting me used to playing again. It's going to take some time. But if I get another off-season of training and then go through training camp next year, that would be great."

Redd said there was never a time he thought he wouldn't make it back.

"I knew I was coming back," he said. "I didn't want to end my career on that note. I went from two extremes. I went from being on top of the world winning a gold medal to being out of the league. It was back-to-back extremes for me. I fought through it, persevered, and I'm back. I'm blessed to be back."

He will be a free agent this summer, but he's not the least bit worried about that.

"My main thing right now is being healthy," he said. "Being healthy will take care of everything else. Free agency will take care of itself when it comes."

Fill in the blanks: Michael Redd

"I'm having so much fun!" Michael Redd said after returning from not one but two surgeries. / Associated Press file

The record books will show that during the 2010-2011 season, former Ohio State Buckeye Michael Redd played the fewest games of his career and scored at a lower rate than he had in any season since his rookie year.

What the numbers won't show is that the games Redd did play and the points he did score will be among the most enjoyable of his distinguished career.

In January, 2009, Redd tore the ACL and MCL in his left knee, forcing him to miss the rest of the 2008-2009 season. Redd returned for his 10th campaign with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2009-2010, but played only 18 games before tearing the same ACL and MCL again in January, 2010.

After 14 more months of rehab, Redd made his NBA return on March 28, 2011, and although he failed to score in a one-point loss, nothing could dampen his excitement about being back.

"I'm having so much fun!" said Redd, who kissed the court on his first day back at practice. "The other night was a heartbreaking loss for us, and I hate to lose, but overall, I'm just so happy to be back playing. The game is fun again. I think we all appreciate the game in our own way, but when you suffer two injuries like (I did), you tend to appreciate it a little more."

Redd's farewell to Milwaukee?
By Charles F. Gardner of the Journal Sentinel
April 11, 2011

Bucks guard Michael Redd is the only player selected in the 2000 NBA draft to remain on the same team that drafted him.

Redd, taken 43rd overall by the Bucks out of Ohio State, has risen from that second-round status to become an NBA all-star and a gold-medal U.S. Olympian.

And now Redd could be playing his last home game with the Bucks on Monday night as they conclude their disappointing season against the Toronto Raptors.

It's a bittersweet finish for Redd, who has missed most of the past three seasons after suffering two anterior cruciate ligament tears in his left knee. He was injured in January 2009 and tore ligaments in the same knee in January 2010 in a game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

After a 14-month recovery period, Redd returned to the Bucks lineup against Charlotte on March 28 and has played in the last eight games.

"I've seen it all, man," Redd said in an interview Monday morning. "Eleven years in the city. Obviously there was a love affair with the fans and myself. They've seen me grow up. They've seen me get married and seen me have kids.

"I've seen the playoff runs. It's very rare that a second-round pick sticks this long with an organization. I don't know if it's ever happened before."

Michael Redd says he can still play
Associated Press

MILWAUKEE -- Michael Redd knows his time with the Milwaukee Bucks likely will come to an end Wednesday night. He doesn't see the clock running out on his career anytime soon.

Despite two separate injuries to his left knee that have cost him large chunks of three straight seasons -- and playing only sporadically off the bench since he returned last month from the second injury -- Redd still believes he can be a regular contributor in the NBA.

"Absolutely," Redd said. "For me right now, these last eight, nine games for me were like a training camp-type experience. I never really had a rhythm, just tried to build on limited minutes. We wanted to ease my body back into it. But having another offseason training, getting stronger, then having a training camp -- which is so important, you need training camp and a preseason. So I'll be involved in that next year, wherever I'm at."

Redd is in the final season of a six-year, $91 million deal he signed in 2005. The Bucks aren't expected to re-sign him, so Wednesday night's season finale at Oklahoma City probably will be his last game in a Bucks uniform after 11 seasons.

?Redd I wouldn't trade anything. Just had a tremendous journey over these 11 years. [The Bucks have] seen me grow up, because I've been here since I was 20 years old. It's been an amazing journey. Some ups, some downs. But through it all, the fans have been great, the organization's been great to my family and it's pretty awesome.
? -- Michael Redd

In the Bucks' final home game of the year, Redd played a quiet 14-plus minutes and scored two points on 1-for-6 shooting in Monday night's victory over Toronto. He received a warm round of applause before the game and a small pocket of fans chanted for him late in the fourth quarter.

"It's been a glorious 11 years," Redd said. "I wouldn't trade anything. Just had a tremendous journey over these 11 years. They've seen me grow up, because I've been here since I was 20 years old. It's been an amazing journey. Some ups, some downs. But through it all, the fans have been great, the organization's been great to my family and it's pretty awesome."

Redd sounds ready to move on to another team, but is looking forward to spending some time with his family first. After spending the summer of 2008 playing for Team USA in the Olympics, Redd tore ligaments in his left knee in January 2009 -- then did it again in January 2010.

In all, Redd has played in 60 games, with 44 starts, since the beginning of the 2008-09 season. And after all that time rehabilitating injuries, Redd's ready for some down time.

Of course, there's a chance Redd -- and the rest of the league -- could have plenty of time to rest, as the NBA could be headed toward a work stoppage.

Although it isn't at the top of his mind, Redd clearly is aware of the labor situation.

"Obviously, it's a concern for all the players and parties involved," Redd said. "I'll side with the players and want to make sure everything's right for us and fair for us. But I haven't worried about it too much."

Redd Ready For Next NBA Challenge

April 15, 2011
Michael Redd could have become a free agent years ago and latched on with an NBA contender. Instead, he re-signed with the organization that drafted him, the Milwaukee Bucks, and talked about staying with them for the rest of his career.

That?s not going to happen now. Redd has battled two separate nasty injuries to his left knee in the last two years and the Bucks have moved on without him as youngsters such as Andrew Bogut and Brandon Jennings now at the forefront of the franchise.

But Redd?s decade-long run in Milwaukee did not end with a whimper. In the team?s final regular-season finale at Oklahoma City on Wednesday, he came off the bench to log a season-high 29 points, hit 5 of 10 shots, and logged 11 points, three rebounds and two assists. More important, he sparked a late rally with a three as the Buckeyes posted a 9-0 run in the final 86 seconds of regulation to tie the game and eventually win it in overtime, 110-106.

Still just 31, the Columbus native and former Ohio State star was selected in the second round of the 2000 draft by Milwaukee and played in just a handful of games his rookie season. However, the 6-6 lefty worked diligently on his game, specifically his long-range jumper and went on to become one of the most dangerous outside shooters in the game.

Redd's return not ruled out
By Charles F. Gardner of the Journal Sentinel
April 27, 2011

One of the interesting items to come out of general manager John Hammond's news briefing Tuesday was this: Michael Redd still might be an appealing option for the Bucks.

It's difficult to know what will happen in free agency and with the lockout that could begin July 1. Redd is a free agent and will be able to consider offers from any teams.

But the way both parties ended the past season allows the possibility of Redd's return. The 31-year-old worked hard to get back in shape and was able to play in the final 10 games of the season.

And Redd appreciated the way coach Scott Skiles made an effort to get him back into the lineup as a reserve, even when the Bucks were still fighting for an Eastern Conference playoff berth.

It's thought there will be some interest in Redd around the league, as a shooter who can come off the bench and give the team an offensive boost. Clearly the Bucks could use that, too.

One has to look no further than Tracy McGrady and Grant Hill to see examples of veteran players who have overcome injuries to remain productive players. Redd is coming off back-to-back anterior cruciate ligament surgeries so he faces a daunting task.

But he is determined to prove he can play at a high level and has stated he doesn't want to end his career due to injury.

Redd handled his rehab in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio and worked closely with the Ohio State physical therapist and athletic trainer Chris McKenzie. The Bucks guard returned to the team following the NBA all-star break in February and worked his way back into basketball form before returning to the court on March 28 at Charlotte.

He played in the Bucks' final 10 games and was able to play 29 minutes while scoring 11 points in the season finale at Oklahoma City on April 13.

"There were questions earlier in the year like, 'Why is Michael not here. Why is he not in Milwaukee?'" Hammond said. "We answered them. We said it's because he's where he needs to be. He's getting himself ready; he's getting himself prepared.

"And I thought when he came back to Milwaukee he showed that. He was in great shape physically. His leg was in good shape. I thought he finished the season fairly well. To get thrown right in the mix and perform at game speed, it's not easy."

Good in Green? Michael Redd
July, 10, 2011
By Chris Forsberg

Continuing our offseason look at players that could be of interest to the Boston Celtics once a new collective bargaining agreement is achieved with a look at shooting guard Michael Redd:

The skinny: One of the league's elite scorers until knee injuries interfered in recent seasons, Redd averaged 21 points or better from 2003-2008 before suffering tearing the ACL and MCL in his left knee in January of 2009. Redd returned nine months later for the start of the 2009-10 season, but re-tore both ligaments less than a year after the original injury, sidelining him for the next 14 months.

2010-11 season: Redd returned to action for the first time since the re-injury on March 28 in Charlotte and played in the Bucks' final 10 games of the regular season, averaging 4.4 points on 40 percent shooting (just 23.5 percent beyond the arc) over 13.4 minutes per game. Redd earned $18.3 million in the final year of a six-year, $90.9 million contract he inked in August of 2005.

ASK IRA: Does Michael Redd set up as a Heat option?
by: Ira Winderman July 7th, 2011

Q: Michael Redd, Allen Iverson, Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter were all superstars once upon a time, and none have yet to really show an ability to effectively step back and contribute in a supporting role. These are each highly unlikely options for the Heat, but just for fun, who do you see having the best chance to somehow land in Miami? Humor me, Ira. ? Lance.

A: Redd, by far, and I think he would be intriguing. He already has experience on the national-team level with some Heat players, and with all his time lost due to injury, I would think winning would be a priority. Seeing Redd at the 3-point line certainly would inspire more confidence than what Mike Bibby provided in the playoffs.

Free agent profile: Michael Redd
July 27, 2011

This is the 24th post in a series of free-agent profiles that analyzes a particular player and how he might fit in with the Lakers.

Milwaukee Bucks shooting guard Michael Redd

Type of free agent: Unrestricted

Positives: Redd has proven to be a solid three-point shooter with a career 38.3% mark. Redd may not provide much on defense and athleticism, but his arrival would fill an immediate need in the Lakers' backcourt, which would then make it easier for Kobe Bryant to find open looks and for the likes of Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum to receive better post touches. Because he's 32 and coming off three seasons where he's been plagued by injuries, the market value could be pretty low.

Since the Lakers are strapped financially because of an uncertain collective bargaining agreement and long-term contracts on their core players, finding an effective shooter at a cheap rate would be a realistic option in bolstering the team's lineup.

Negatives: As mentioned with his previous injury history, Redd has played in only 61 games over the last three seasons, and his shooting has dipped ever since his return to the court. Redd averaged at least 21 points per game from the 2003-2008 before tearing the ACL and MCL in his left knee in January 2009. Nine months later, Redd returned only to reinjure both ligaments less than a year after the original injury and remained sidelined for 14 months. In the Bucks' final 10 games, Redd averaged only 4.4 points on 40% shooting and 23.5% from three-point range. It's unlikely Redd can ever restore his pre-injury shooting levels, and that's assuming he stays healthy.

Verdict: This would be a good move depending on what Redd is actually looking for in free agency. There are plenty of contending teams, including the Celtics, who are looking for a quality three-point shooter at a basement busting price. But because the market for quality shooters remain high, Redd could find himself with long-term and pricey offers. The Lakers can't afford to get in that race, but they're able to sign Redd at a discounted sale, then he's definitely worth it.

Pray For This: Michael Redd Should End Up With A Contender

By Sean Sweeney
Michael Redd

It?s been a long road for Michael Redd. From somebody to nobody to somebody to nobody to forgotten, the man once described as the missing link for Team USA may still have a few years left in him. Two devastating knee injuries have limited him to just 61 games the past three seasons, and have had the public wondering for close to two years whether they were career-ending. Now the man who twice averaged over 25 points a night just wants to get back in where he can, and hopefully win some games.

Gery Woelfel of the Racine Journal-Times writes:

I?ve heard Milwaukee Bucks management approached Michael Redd before the lockout about returning for another season, although my impeccable sources insist he?s going to wind up with one of the Eastern Conference?s title contenders.

Miami Heat ?Free-agent Focus?: Michael Redd
by: Ira Winderman September 6th, 2011

(When the lockout ends, the Miami Heat will be limited to no more than the mid-level exception to spend in free agency, which should fall somewhere in the $5.5 million range. That?s if it exists at all in a new collective-bargaining agreement. Otherwise, there might only be the veteran minimum to spend, which would be roughly $1 million for 2011-12. This is the seventh in a series of evaluations of potential free-agent targets.)

2010-11 salary: $18.3 million.

The case for: For all the shooters the Heat had on last season?s roster, there didn?t seem to be particular confidence in any, from James Jones to Eddie House, and eventually to Mike Bibby. When healthy, Redd can not only be an elite shooter, but an elite scorer. And the price could be right.

The case against: The one thing Erik Spoelstra has shown is limited inclination to play shooting specialists who stand as little more than that. Plus, with the Heat?s limited resources, is taking on a player coming off so much missed time the right move?

We say: This is where bargains can be found, with a player trying to prove he is back, particularly one who has spent so many years away from a winning situation. The shame is the lack of an offseason evaluation period due to the lockout.

Michael Redd will be resuming his pro career this season but, for the first time since entering the NBA in 2000, it won't be with the Bucks.

Redd, an unrestricted free agent, is a cinch to join another team when the signing period begins Dec. 9. Redd, who has had two major knee surgeries in recent years, is drawing keen interest from a slew of teams, including some NBA-title contenders.

According to some league officials, Chicago, Boston, New York and Miami all have Redd on their radar.
