SG Michael Redd (NBA All Star, Olympic gold medalist)

Michael Redd uses season with Suns as stepping stone for future
Posted by Kevin Zimmerman on June 7th

The return of Michael Redd to an NBA basketball court was one of the under-publicized feel-good stories of this season after two crushing tears to his ACL cost him more than two full season?s worth of games.

Nobody expected Redd to return to his All-Star form from his Milwaukee days, but his signing with the Phoenix Suns in late December was beneficial to both the 32-year-old and the organization. The fledgling relationship between he and the Suns was expected to provide head coach Alvin Gentry with another bench option and give the talented scorer an opportunity to find his legs.

Both missions were accomplished.

In a season that went at a breakneck pace, it wasn?t fair to expect that Redd would ever hit 100 percent in basketball shape, and even youngsters like Marcin Gortat and Markieff Morris admitted the season wore on them physically. Simply put, there wasn?t the time in the training room nor enough time to recover in between games for Redd to completely find his old self.

Yet that, and the fact that Redd remained healthy in his knees and otherwise, only gives hope that the former Ohio State Buckeye hasn?t shown just how big of a contributor he can be for the Suns or any other NBA team.

Redd ended the season with averages of 8.2 points and 1.5 rebounds per game, shooting 40 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from three-point range.

In playing just 15 minutes per game in his return while under the guidance of the Suns? well-respected training staff, Redd had a decent PER of 14 and was Phoenix?s most prolific scorer in terms of points per minute played. Redd?s 19.5 points per 36 minutes in 2011-12 is nearly on the same pace as his 20.9 points per 36 minutes in the beginning of the season before his first ACL tear in January of 2009, according to Basketball-Reference.com.

And he became a key cog in the second unit that gelled after the All-Star break for Gentry, acting as a streaky gunner and consistent shooter from mid-range, especially coming across curl screens on the wing.

After the game I caught up with Scoonie?s former running mate in that lethalist of Buckeye backcourts to see how things were with Michael Redd these days.

?It was great being a part of it today, I had a great time,? Redd told me about being on the sidelines for the game. ?It was good to see Cleveland and Columbus get together for a great game, and it was a competitive game, so it was a lot of fun.?

Tristan Thompson went for 27 and 10 for Team Cleveland. Juby Johnson added 20 points and Chet Mason finished with 12 on 6-of-8 shooting for the visiting squad. Evan Turner had 17 and 7 for Team Columbus, Ron Lewis threw in 18, and Terrance Dials, Jon Diebler and Brian Brown added 12, 11 and 10 points respectively for the winning side. The game came down to the last possession, with Team 614 getting the defensive stop to seal it.

?It was great to for me to see guys like Scoonie again, see him out there playing, and just being able to hang out with him. Different guys like Antonio Daniels, Samaki Walker, Damon Stringer and Keith McLeod too, it was good to see all those guys you played with through the years; I hadn?t seen them in a while so it was good to see everybody.?

As far as what team Michael Redd may be suiting up for next year, he told me he hasn?t narrowed his decision down just yet.

?There isn?t anybody we are targeting in particular right now,? Redd said. ?We have teams calling, and we?re going to negotiate from there. But I?m leaving all that to my agent right now. It?s still early for us, once we get more into those talks, I?ll figure out where I want to go from there.?

I asked Redd, who came back last season to appear in 51 games for the Phoenix Suns and average 8.2 points in 15.1 minutes per game, how he?s feeling right now.

?I feel real good man. I feel terrific. Last year, coming back with Phoenix I had a blast, and right now I feel real good. No set-backs, no pain, and I feel great.?

So Ron Lewis was the leading scorer on the winning team. Sounds familiar. Wish someone would give him a look in the league. The Mavs could use some players after this summer's exodus.

Free-agent profile: Michael Redd
By Mark Medina
July 23, 2012

Player: Michael Redd

Former team: Phoenix Suns

Type of free agent: Unrestricted

Positives: The Lakers remain in dire need of acquiring a quality shooter at a bargain-bin price. Redd appears to be the perfect candidate. In relative terms, the 6-foot-6 guard/forward had a resurgent season in Phoenix, averaging 8.2 points per game a year after averaging a career-low 4.4 points during an injury-riddled campaign. It's clear that Redd is unlikely to replicate the 19 points per game he's averaged in his career, but that won't be a problem for the Lakers for two reasons. He'd only be asked to score off the bench, which lightens the load, and his low market value would make any Lakers interest more attractive to him. Redd has proven that he can still play when healthy, and considering the Lakers' superb training staff, he might very well maximize his play in Los Angeles.

Negatives: Forget about Redd's limitations with his defense and conditioning. The Lakers' interest in him focuses on a very specific skill set. But even when healthy last season, Redd shot only 40%. In four of the past five season's, Redd's three-point shooting has hovered around the mid-30% range. Redd, who turns 33 next month, used to be able to score in bunches, but he only reached the 20-point mark in three games last season.

It's also impossible to discount his injury history.

Redd has played in only 111 games in the past four seasons, and his shooting hasn't been the same since. Redd averaged at least 21 points per game from the 2003-2008 before tearing the ACL and MCL in his left knee in January 2009. Redd returned nine months later, only to reinjure both ligaments less than a year after the original injury. He remained sidelined for 14 months. Though the Lakers could tolerate Redd's dropoff in scoring, they can't absorb Redd missing 15 games as he did last season.

Verdict: It really depends on Redd's health. That's why it wouldn't hurt if the Lakers invited Redd for a workout. But it's understandable if L.A. seems reluctant in hoping to rekindle a shooting flame Redd lost seasons ago.

Report: five teams express interest in Michael Redd
Kurt Helin
Aug 22, 2012

As teams finish rounding out their roster, they tend to go with one of two kinds of players for spots 11-15 at the end of the bench ? young players with potential they think might develop, or a veteran they think can provide a little help on the court and be good in the locker room.

Michael Redd is the latter. He will be just 33 next season but his knees are much older than that. Last season in Phoenix he gave them 8.2 points per game in 15 minutes, but the once feared sharpshooter hit just 40 percent of his shots and 31.8 percent from three. He?s not efficient anymore. Notice the Suns (not exactly an NBA contender) are not bringing him back.

However, there are teams interested in Redd, reports Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio.

Apparently no interest from Cavs on Ohio guy Michael Redd, but teams mentioned as possible suitors include the? Wizards, Nuggets, Grizzlies, Bulls, and yes, Thunder, who still have a spot available in the backcourt after Derek Fisher?s departure.

Take this all with a grain of salt, this likely comes an agent or someone in the business of promoting Redd. Also know that he would get a veteran?s minimum deal only so long as the GM in question is sober.

Some team will grab him, likely close to the start of camp. That list could expand a little if a team suffers an injury at guard and is suddenly looking for depth at the spot, but basically he is not going to be a guy you want on your fantasy team anymore.

Source: Timberwolves interested in bringing guard Michael Redd to camp
by Darren Wolfson

SportsWire Daily

As if the Minnesota Timberwolves don't have enough players with knees being a central storyline, they're trying hard to bring free-agent shooting guard Michael Redd into camp according to a league source.

But so far, he's declining their overtures.

Redd, who played for Team USA in the 2008 Olympics, spent last year with Phoenix where he averaged 8.2 points per game in 15 minutes, but he made just 31.8 percent of his three-point attempts.

In his prime, the 33-year-old Redd was one of the best scorers in the NBA, at one point averaging 27 points per game with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2006-2007. But he tore and re-tore his left ACL and MCL over a one year period from January 2009 to 2010 and hasn't been the same player.

Jeff?s Weekly Sports Rapp: Redd-y For A Return Engagement
By Jeff Rapp

It was a circus sideshow without the circus.

In fact, Michael Redd didn?t even crack a smile and his feat wasn?t met with applause. But that made it no less spectacular.

The former Ohio State star and Columbus native had agreed to a workout before representatives of the Minnesota Timberwolves last week and the Schottenstein Center, a building he helped christen, was selected as the locale.

A 6-6 lefty now known for his sharpshooting skills, Redd has not played in the NBA this season after making a comeback from two nasty knee injuries and toiling for the Phoenix Suns last year.

There is expectation of his eventual return to the top level of the game but also plenty of reason for doubt ? his age (33), his injuries, time away from the league. No one would have been surprised if Redd was a little rusty as he began to flit about the court and fire up shots from all angles.

But that wasn?t the case.
