Redd seals return to court with a kiss

Michael Redd runs a drill in his return to practice. Redd hasn't played since January 2010.

St. Francis - Michael Redd said he was so happy to be back at the Cousins Center on Monday that he planted a kiss on the practice court.

After more than 13 months away following surgery on his left knee, Redd rejoined his Bucks teammates and took part in the first portions of practice.

The Bucks returned from the all-star break and went through a spirited session with everyone in attendance, according to coach Scott Skiles.

"It's one of the happiest days in my career," Redd said as he toweled off after practice. "To be on the court again is a blessing.

I told coach Skiles, 'I kissed the court when I came back to the gym.' You just treasure it. I haven't played in a year and a half. Just to get back out here and play and be with the guys, it's the greatest feeling in the world."

The 31-year-old Redd, in the final year of his six-year contract with the Bucks, suffered torn anterior cruciate and torn medial collateral ligaments in his left knee in successive seasons. He first hurt his left knee in a January 2009 game against Sacramento, then injured the same knee in a January 2010 game against the Los Angeles Lakers at the Staples Center.

"After the second injury I was really down a couple days," Redd said. "I was just down about it. But I had a good supporting cast around me. My wife was incredible, my parents and obviously my faith in God was the main thing that kept me afloat. It kept me saying, 'You can do it again.'"

Skiles and Redd declined to speculate on when the Bucks guard might be able to return to the floor.

But Redd said he had no doubt he would be able to do it as he progresses with more basketball drills. He had been working out diligently in the past months at Ohio State University, in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.

"I'm transitioning from training and therapy to now, basketball," Redd said. "I got some contact a little bit in drills. The more I get used to it, the more comfortable I'll feel.

"I'm doing some 1-on-1 right now. It will be soon."

REDD RETURN: Skiles said the Bucks are targeting veteran Michael Redd's return around March 21, which would give him three more weeks to prepare.

Redd has not played since suffering anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligament tears in his left knee more than 13 months ago, when he was injured in a game against the Los Angeles Lakers at the Staples Center.

He suffered the same injury to the same knee the previous year, so he is trying to come back from successive major surgeries at age 31.

Skiles said he has no idea what Redd's role will be in the final four-plus weeks of the season.

"I don't know how are we going to be at that point," Skiles said. "Are we going to win seven out of eight and get back into this thing? Or are we not?

"I would root for anybody. He's put a lot of effort and determination to come back from the same injury twice. But most guys would. He's trying to come back and extend his career. Michael's not an old player. Michael's still a young guy and can be effective. It's just a matter of being healthy."

Redd's return still raises questions

Michael Redd says he is about two weeks away from being able to play for the Bucks.

Washington ? Michael Redd is making steady progress as he prepares to play in his first National Basketball Association game in 14 months.

Redd is about two weeks away from returning with a target date of around March 21. That might put the 31-year-old Milwaukee Bucks guard back on the court for a home game against Sacramento on March 23 or perhaps a March 25 game at New York.

The moment he steps back in the arena is sure to be an emotional one for the veteran shooting guard, who has suffered two major injuries to his left knee in successive seasons and undergone two surgeries. Both times he sustained torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments.

But exactly what Redd's role will be when he comes back is something of a mystery.

Even Bucks coach Scott Skiles admitted he couldn't say for sure how he will use Redd in the last few weeks of the season.

"We'll see where we are; we'll see where he is," Skiles said. "Those are the main two things.

"The most important thing is where we are at that moment. If that moment comes and we're right there (competing for a playoff spot), and every minute, every moment is crucial, and we can only play Michael 7 minutes or something to work him back in, I don't know.

"I'll talk to Michael and everything when we get to that point. Michael has put in a tremendous amount of effort. We'd all like to see him come back and get in games."

The Bucks' playoff hopes are fading with each defeat. Following their 89-83 loss at home to Boston on Sunday night, they still trail the eighth-place Indiana Pacers by 3? games, and Milwaukee (23-38) has just 21 games remaining.

Next on the schedule is a back-to-back set at Washington on Tuesday night and at home against Cleveland on Wednesday night.

Skiles has been using starter John Salmons for major minutes in recent games and going with veteran Keyon Dooling in reserve at the shooting guard position.

Of course, Redd is eager to play again and prove to NBA teams that he can be a valuable addition next season. His six-year, $91 million contract signed in the summer of 2005 is due to expire at the end of the season, and a possible lockout could complicate Redd's attempts to sign a new deal.

It appears unlikely the Bucks will be interested in signing Redd, who has played all 11 of his pro seasons with the franchise. They signed Salmons to a five-year contract worth as much as $39 million during the past off-season, when Salmons was an unrestricted free agent.

Redd ranks fourth on the team's all-time scoring list and is just 85 points away from passing Sidney Moncrief for the third spot.

The former Ohio State guard has achieved all-star status (in 2004) and Olympic gold (in 2008 as a member of Team USA) since being chosen by the Bucks with the 43rd overall pick in the 2000 draft.

"I'm getting back into playing basketball again, getting back into a rhythm," Redd said. "The guys ask me every day, 'When are you coming back?'

"I want to play with them so bad and just contribute to this team. I can't wait to play again."

REDD PROGRESSING: Skiles said guard Michael Redd continues to progress in his comeback from knee surgery. The 31-year-old Redd rejoined the Bucks after the all-star break and has been working closely with assistant coach Bill Peterson.

The Bucks have set a target date of March 21 for his return, and the first game after that date is a March 23 home game against Sacramento. Milwaukee also has a Sunday home game against the New York Knicks on March 20.

"He looks good," Skiles said. "We're still targeting the 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, somewhere in there. We're trying to get him some live work, which is hard right now. Hopefully we can get a day in there where he can minimum go 4-on-4 and get up and down the floor.

"The schedule is not great right now. We're suddenly behind teams in games now and they're going to start coming."

Bucks' Michael Redd works toward a return
Mar 13, 2011
By A. Sherrod Blakely
CSNNE.com

BOSTON ? The sweat is pouring off the forehead of Milwaukee Bucks guard Michael Redd like a leaky faucet . . . and he couldn't be any happier.

Missing 103 games (and counting) plus the playoffs a year ago will make any NBA player -- especially a former All-star -- eager to get back on the floor.

And when he returns, Redd is eager to show that the high-scoring shooting guard that used to be the face of the Fear the Deer movement is back which, truth be told, was very much in doubt.

Shortly after surgery to repair a second torn ACL and MCL injury to his left knee just a year apart from each other, Redd had a bunch of questions for the attending physicians.

There was just one that truly mattered.

"I asked them, 'Would I be able to come back and play my game?' " Redd recalled to CSNNE.com prior to Boston's 87-56 win over Milwaukee on Sunday. "That was a determining factor for me. If I wasn't going to be able to play my game, I don't know if I would have come back. The doctor said you should be able to do everything you did before the injury."

The first chance of that happening will be later this month.

Redd told CSNNE.com he's targeting March 20 against the New York Knicks or March 23 against the Sacramento Kings -- both home games for Milwaukee -- to make his return to the court.

The fact that Redd is even thinking about playing basketball still is amazing when you consider he has suffered a torn ACL and MCL injury in his left knee twice.

"I've had one [torn ACL injury]," said Celtics coach Doc Rivers. "That's all you need. You don't need more than one in your lifetime."

After the first one in 2009, Redd simply chalked it up as being one of those things.

But to suffer a second torn ACL and MCL injury a year later, had him asking a lot of questions that, truth be told, there are no answers forthcoming.

"The question did cross my mind, 'Why me?' " Redd said. "I worked so hard."

Pro basketball: Redd returns to Bucks after 13-month injury setback
Feb. 21, 2011
Written by The Associated Press

MILWAUKEE -- Michael Redd rejoined the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday with a new perspective for the game.

Redd last played 13 months ago when he tore both the anterior cruciate ligament and the medial collateral ligament in his left knee on Jan. 10 against the Lakers in Los Angeles. He was away from Milwaukee with the club's permission, opting to rehabilitate back home in Columbus, Ohio.

"It feels great," Redd said after participating in practice. "It feels great. One of the happiest days of my career to come back and be a part of practice. To be on the court is a blessing, man. I kissed the court."

Redd has averaged 20.2 points in his 10-year career and was a gold-medal winning member of Team USA at the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship and at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, but has appeared in just 51 NBA games since.

"You really start to treasure things when you can't do them anymore," Redd said. "I missed the last two years of my career due to injury. Not that I didn't appreciate it before, but I appreciate it even more because I did miss it."

Injured guard Redd joins practice with Bucks Redd, 31, missed the final 48 games of the 2009-2010 season and was out nine games from Nov. 3-21 with a strained left patella tendon. Then, it was seven more from Nov. 28 to Dec. 9 with left knee soreness.

His sore left knee cost him a considerable portion of the 2008-09 season. He played in 33 games and led Milwaukee in scoring for the sixth consecutive year at 21.2 points per game, but missed the last 35 games after tearing the ACL and MCL in his left knee on Jan. 24, 2009, against Sacramento.

Redd's first step will be to work out with team trainers to determine his next step.

Plenty of unknowns loom as Redd nears return from injury
Posted Mar 17 2011

No one can ever say Michael Redd didn't work hard enough to get himself back, all the way back, as a productive, valuable NBA player.

No one can say at this moment, though, just how successful he will be. Now or ever.

Redd, the Milwaukee Bucks' veteran shooting guard, has been largely absent the past three seasons (appearing in 51 of 231 games, none since Jan. 10, 2010). Anyone who wants to see him on a court better show up early, for that's where Redd logs his minutes. Long minutes, lonely minutes, because even with cheerleaders stretching out at midcourt, photographers on ladders for that final camera adjustment and teammates warming up nearby, what Redd goes through, he goes through alone.

Sweat drips off him as he takes pass after pass from a Bucks assistant, cutting, stopping, launching jump shot after jump shot. It has been 14 months since Redd shot one of those for real, an 0-for-4 night at Staples Center that ended early when his left knee crumpled beneath him -- the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments shredded -- for the second January in a row.

One year earlier, against Sacramento, he had torn the same ligaments, same troublesome knee, banishing him to the rigors of rehab he has come to know -- and loathe -- so well.

"I'm on the brink, man," Redd said, his court work down, catching his breath on the Bucks bench an hour before tipoff against Orlando Wednesday. "Words can't describe. What I've been through over the last year and a half, two years, to be healthy -- healthy healthy -- it's a blessing. It's an incredible story, actually."

Two surgeries, either of which might have been enough to end many athletes' careers, did more than jeopardize Redd's playing career. They put him in awkward territory with the Bucks and their fans. His plush salary -- $18.3 million this season, at the end of a six-year, $91 million contract -- was alive and well, complicating Milwaukee's salary-cap considerations, keeping his name in play for trade rumors. And as the Bucks' other injuries have undermined their ambitions for 2010-11, Redd has taken blame even while he's been out of sight, out of action.

Guilt, criticism, pressure -- they've been tough to deal with, too, right there with every little twinge in his left knee.

"My faith in God has been the main thing," Redd said of his endurance. "The first time when it happened, you think, 'I'm going to bounce back. No problem.' Second time it happens kind of devastates you. But I've relied on my faith, the Lord, and also on my wife and parents, my family. The Bucks organization has been terrific, just supporting me.

"One of the challenging things this time around has been mentally. Being mentally prepared to go through rehab again. It's rigorous, it's hard but it's worth it."

Chris Mannix>INSIDE THE NBA

BOSTON -- Michael Redd could have quit. He could have walked away from the game and no one would have thought less of him. As he lay prone on the Staples Center floor last January, the ACL and MCL in his left knee shredded for the second time in less than a year, Redd had few reasons to pick himself back up. He had earned more than $100 million in his career. He had made an All-Star team and won an Olympic gold medal. By anyone's measure, Redd's career had been a success.

But he didn't quit. He got up (again), had surgery (again) and put his body through a sometimes-painful, often-grueling rehab (again). For 2? hours a day, five days a week, Redd, 31, worked with trainers at the Ohio State Medical Center, pounding his legs with squats and exploding drills and running his body ragged.

Today, the hard work has paid off. Working out before Milwaukee's game against the Celtics on Sunday, Redd moved fluidly, cutting and pivoting without any hesitation. His 6-foot-6 frame looked solid -- he weighs a career-low 214 pounds -- and the polished jump shot that made him one of the most dangerous shooters in the game appeared sharp.

"I just wasn't going to go out like that," Redd said. "It's not about money. It's about ending my career on my terms. I don't want to end my career limping off the floor. That motivated me, it pushed me through the physical therapy, the training, everything."

Redd close to being part of action with Bucks

Michael Redd hasn?t played since his knee injury on Jan. 10, 2010.
Guard could return Wednesday night
By Charles F. Gardner of the Journal Sentinel
March 17, 2011

St. Francis ? The countdown is getting shorter for Milwaukee Bucks guard Michael Redd.

If he can get a full-contact practice early next week, Redd could be cleared to return against Sacramento on Wednesday or possibly later in the week. The Bucks play at New York on March 25 and return home to meet the Chicago Bulls on March 26.

One of those dates appears to be a Redd-alert for the 31-year-old guard to be back in a Bucks uniform.

It will be the first time he has performed in an NBA game since he tore ligaments in his left knee on Jan. 10, 2010, against the Los Angeles Lakers at the Staples Center.

Redd also missed the last 35 games of the 2008-'09 season after suffering torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in the same knee.

Redd has persevered through nearly two years of rehabilitation to get to this point.

"Rehab is brutal; it's grueling," Redd said. "I love to train, though. I wanted to see my body transform. In order for that to happen, I had to go through a rigorous rehab session every day.

"It was tedious, over 180 visits to therapy. But my body feels great, and I'm glad I went through it."

Redd has taken encouragement from other NBA players who have suffered serious injuries and returned to play at a high level, including the Phoenix Suns' Grant Hill.

"The individual person has to love the game and work through injury and not get frustrated with it," Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers said about Redd's comeback.

"There was nothing Michael could do, nothing Grant Hill could do. It's bum luck. The fact Michael still wants to play . . . ACL injuries, I've had one. It's all you need. You don't need more than one in your lifetime.

"The rehab is far tougher than the injury. The fact he's hanging around and still wants to do this tells you he loves the game."

Redd could play Friday or Saturday for Bucks
By Charles F. Gardner of the Journal Sentinel

Michael Redd has not played in a game since Jan. 10, 2010.

St. Francis ? Michael Redd passed a major test Tuesday as he practiced 5-on-5 for the first time in 14 months.

The 31-year-old Milwaukee Bucks guard said he will not play against Sacramento on Wednesday night but could make his return against the Knicks in New York on Friday or at home against the Chicago Bulls on Saturday.

When he does put on a Bucks uniform again, it will mark a major milestone for Redd, who is coming off two surgeries for anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligament tears in his left knee.

He has not played since injuring his knee in a game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Jan. 10, 2010 at the Staples Center. The first ACL injury occurred on Jan. 24, 2009 against Sacramento.

"Just coming back, period, whether it be there (at Madison Square Garden) or at the Bradley Center, just coming back to play will be awesome," Redd said of his long-awaited return.

"For me, there's no pressure to do anything but just go play and have fun and count my blessings."

How much Redd will play over the final dozen or so games is uncertain, particularly with the Bucks battling for the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

Milwaukee (28-41) trails eighth-place Indiana (31-40) by two games.

"On one hand, it's very simple," Bucks coach Scott Skiles said of working Redd back into the rotation. "We have to try to win the game that night.

"It's not easy to make decisions, necessarily. We're not in a position right now where the priority is working a guy back in. The priority is winning the game.

"If we feel a player or two players can help us be productive and win the game, those will be the guys that play."

Skiles praised Redd's conditioning and hard work to put himself in a position to return.

"Michael is in very good shape," Skiles said. "You can't tell that he's missed any time at all with regard to his conditioning.

"During the whole rehab process, he's done a lot of working out. It's just a matter of getting his timing back, things like that, kind of relearning the things we're trying to do."

The former Ohio State star said he is learning some new wrinkles in the Bucks offense while also trying to refine the basketball skills he has not been able to rehearse for so many months.

"The shot is there; it's just short or long," Redd said. "One of my coaches teased me today and said, 'You made the hard ones today and you missed the easy ones.'

"When you miss time, 14 months of playing, you've got to find that rhythm again. It's one thing doing individual workouts, but you need to play 5-on-5 to get that rhythm.

"This was a huge step. We'll see how the knee responds. I won't play (Wednesday). I think we're targeting maybe Friday."

REDD RETURNS: Michael Redd sat in front of his locker with the No. 22 hanging behind him.

Yes, the Bucks guard was suiting up again Saturday night, for the first time since he tore ligaments in his left knee more than 14 months ago.

"I'm pretty excited about it, a little nervous," Redd said of being active for the first time since he was injured Jan. 10, 2010 against the Los Angeles Lakers at the Staples Center.

"No disrespect to the Olympics but I might be more nervous than for the gold-medal game (against Spain in 2008). I'm just blessed to be back. I'm always nervous before a game, but this is a little different."

Redd has been working out with the Bucks since Feb. 21, when he returned to the team after the NBA all-star break. He has made steady progress since that time and went 5-on-5 in practice for the first time Tuesday.

"I think it's just to have a game ball in my hand and a jersey on and my shoes on," Redd said of his nerves. "To go through the national anthem, just all the buildup. Once I get out there, I'm sure I'll be fine."

Redd did not play against the Bulls as coach Scott Skiles went with an eight-man rotation and relied heavily on his starters.

Redd said he had a good discussion with Skiles about his role over the final 11 games of the season, with the Bucks fighting for the final Eastern Conference playoff berth. The Bucks trail the Indiana Pacers by two games for the eighth spot.

"I told him, 'It's about the team.' If I play or I don't play, all I care about is the team being successful," Redd said. "And I'm working my way back in and I'm just glad to be back."

Redd is trying to come back from successive knee surgeries. He also tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee in January 2009 and missed the rest of that season.

He played just 18 games last season before tearing up his knee again.

Redd Back In Business
By: Derek Page Last Updated: 3/30/11

After a lengthy rehabilitation and recovery following surgery to repair two torn ligaments in his left knee, Milwaukee Bucks' guard Michael Redd relished his opportunity to be back on the court Monday night against the Charlotte Bobcats.

Two seasons ago, playing against the Sacramento Kings on Jan. 24, 2009, Redd sustained a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee that put him on the shelf for the remainder of the 2008-2009 season. Less than one year later, against the Los Angeles Lakers on Jan. 10, 2010, Redd's surgically repaired left knee gave out on him once more. Over 14 grueling months later, Redd is finally back in a Bucks' uniform.

After being listed as active for the first time all season Saturday against the Chicago Bulls, Redd got his first taste of live-game action Monday night in Charlotte.

"This is probably one of my greatest games ever to come back from two [major knee injuries]... Just to be on that court tonight," Redd said. "This is one of the proudest moments of my career.

"I had a blast out there with my teammates."

Redd, who wasn't sporting a brace on that left knee, resembled Usain Bolt more than a basketball player upon his return to the court with 9:53 left in the first quarter against the Bobcats; sprinting to the scorer's table to check into his first game action in 442 days.

"John [Salmons] picked up two quick ones tonight so it was the perfect opportunity to get Michael out there early in the game and get his feet under him a little bit," Bucks' coach Scott Skiles said after the contest.

After that long of a lay-off, Redd was understandably jittery before the coach called his name off the bench.

"I just wanted to calm down, make sure I didn't trip over my warmups," Redd said with a smirk after the game. "But it was a great feeling to come back."

BUCKS BANTER: Michael Redd sank the 1,000th three-point field goal of his pro career and his first basket in more than 14 months when he delivered from the left wing with 8:10 left in the second quarter, giving the Bucks a 38-34 lead. Redd also scored early in the fourth quarter on a post-up move against Leandro Barbosa and finished with five points, one assist and one rebound in eight minutes. "Mike got a real good look at a three and put it right in the middle," Skiles said, "and he had a really good post-up move. We're trying to watch him early on right here. Otherwise we would have left him out there."
