Entering his ninth year with the Bucks, Michael Redd is spending his summer rehabilitating his surgically repaired left knee at his alma mater, Ohio State

It's hard to believe nearly a decade has passed since a young player out of Ohio State was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round of the 2000 draft.

Now Michael Redd is approaching his 30th birthday this month, and he's facing a turning point in his career.

He is coming back from major surgery on his left knee after an injury that prematurely ended his season in January and helped push the Bucks out of the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

"It's amazing; it's been a fast journey," Redd said of beginning his 10th season with the Bucks this fall. "I'm looking forward to a new chapter after the injury. I'm ready to explode and have some fun."

But first there is more work to be done, more taxing hours of rehabilitation and preparation. Redd has been spending 2 to 2? hours each day working out at Ohio State University, his alma mater in his hometown of Columbus.

Redd has not played basketball yet or been on the court, and he admitted he's getting anxious for that moment.

"I'm just trying to get the leg stronger," he said. "I feel good. I really haven't had any breaks.

"I'm doing a lot of scar-tissue work, machine work and cardio. It's getting the scar tissue to heal. I'm making progress. The whole process is good because it's a chance to build your body up again."

Redd had a heavy year of basketball in 2008, playing more than 2,700 minutes for the Bucks during the 2007-'08 season and heading directly into training with the U.S. Olympic team.

Just one year ago, Redd was in Beijing with the U.S. "Redeem Team" as it made its unbeaten run to an Olympic gold medal.

Redd said he has not talked to anybody about a future role with the U.S. team, although he indicated U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski has contacted him several times to wish him well in returning from his injury.

"It's really not been on my mind, especially with the injury," Redd said. "Right now my focus is on getting healthy."

Bucks trainer Marc Boff has worked with Redd in Columbus to assist in the rehabilitation process.

"I have complete confidence he's going to come back 100%, as does Michael," Hammond said.

Redd said he is pointing to a successful return and is not concerned about any long-term effects.

"The doctors have told me that absolutely I will be able to come back stronger than I was before, if I rehab the proper way," Redd said.

Michael Redd: ?My Goal Is To Be One Of The Elite Guards In The League?
By Aron Phillips

redd_16_02.jpg

After making the All-NBA Third Team in 2004, Michael Redd got paid to the tune of $91 million over six years. Choosing to stay with the Bucks instead of heading back home to play with Cleveland and King James, Redd thought that Milwaukee was headed places other than the lottery. They might have been had he not torn the ACL and MCL in his left knee. But don?t worry Bucks fan, Redd will be back soon and he?s gunnin? to get back to the top.
?My goal is to be one of the elite guards in the league,? Redd said. ?More than anything, I want us to be one of the elite teams. That?s what I?m focused on right now.

?We have a new roster again, and guys have to get to know each other all over again. We?ll see what happens. Hopefully we can have some good news in mid-December or January. When January comes, we?ll see where we?re at.?

Unfortunately what Redd is talking about is that he most likely won?t be back in a Bucks uniform until the new year. And while Brandon Jennings will keep the team in the SportsCenter rotation, a potential starting lineup of Jennings and Luke Ridnour in the backcourt (they have no other viable two guard) along with some combination of Joe Alexander/Luc Richard Mbah a Moute/Hakim Warrick/Kurt Thomas and Andrew Bogut, won?t win too many games.

Keep in mind the Bucks only had five guys that played more than 70 games last year, and they have since gotten rid of three.

Redd making big strides in comeback
By Charles F. Gardner of the Journal Sentinel
Sept. 9, 2009

St. Francis - Michael Redd is back on the court, and that is good news for the Milwaukee Bucks.

The 30-year-old shooting guard is encouraged with his progress six months after undergoing surgery in early March, to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament and torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee.

Redd worked out with teammates at the Cousins Center on Wednesday and said he “could see the light.”

He suffered the injury in a Jan. 24 game against Sacramento and played in just 33 games last season. Redd underwent surgery on March 3. The Bucks were 17-32 without him in the lineup on the way to a 34-48 record.

"It was dark that first week after surgery, that first night,” Redd said. “I’ve been working hard every day, knowing there is more for me to explore, there’s another chapter in my career.”

Bucks strength and conditioning coach Jeff Macy has worked with Redd this week and been impressed.

“He’s pretty much at an advanced stage of returning to play,” Macy said. “Physically, he’s very strong right now. He’s making the transition from machine-based conditioning. He’s more on his feet now.”

Redd is testing the knee, doing straight-ahead speed work and lateral movements, but is not taking part in basketball contact yet. He hopes to be ready for contact by the time training camp starts on Sept. 29.

“Hopefully this injury will be more of a blessing than it was devastating,” Redd said. “I’m working out on the court, getting my timing and my footwork together, my cardio. It’s starting all over again pretty much, learning how to cut certain ways, move certain ways, just trusting that leg.”

Redd will be starting his 10th season with the Bucks this fall. He ranks fifth all-time on the franchise’s scoring list with 11,295 points and is within 300 points of the No. 3 player on the list, Sidney Moncrief.

“My goal is to be one of the elite guards in the league,” Redd said. “More than anything, I want us to be one of the elite teams. That’s what I’m focused on right now.

"We have a new roster again, and guys have to get to know each other all over again. We’ll see what happens. Hopefully we can have some good news (as a team) in mid-December or January. When January comes, we’ll see where we’re at.”

But right now, Redd is focusing on his personal comeback.

"Strength, cardio, everything is getting better," he said. "We'll see how the knee responds through some different exercises. My goal is to be ready to go for training camp."

I'm sorry for Mike, but I don't see the Bucks going anywhere anytime soon, especially with all the good teams in the division. The way the Bucks trade away players maybe they would go for Z and Boobie or West for Redd and then cut Z so the Cavs could resign him. :p

Redd gives half a mil to practice facility project
Michael Redd has made a $500,000 donation to the construction of the Ohio State basketball teams' planned practice, office and hall of fame complex, the athletic department announced before the football game against USC tonight.

"It was the right time and obviously the right reason," Redd said in the press box before the game.

He said athletic director Gene Smith approached him about making a donation two years ago "and I said, `I'm all in,'" Redd said.

"I wanted to be a part of what they were doing. I wanted to have some legacy within the university. And, plus, I love Ohio State. It was a no-brainer. It was just a matter of having the resources to do it, and as soon as I signed my contract, I was able to do it."

Redd has two years left on a $91 million deal with the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks. He missed the end of last season and may miss the start of this season after having surgery in March to repair two torn ligaments in his left knee. He began preseason workouts with the Bucks last week in Milwaukee.

Before going to Ohio Stadium last night, he said he played golf yesterday afternoon at New Albany Country Club with Scoonie Penn and Mike Conley Jr.

"Beat 'em both," Redd said.

Fresh feeling: Bucks need to gel quickly, Redd says

Charles F. Gardner of the Journal Sentinel - Sept 22, 2009

"I'm anxious to see how we do in pre-season," Redd said. "We've got to develop chemistry quick, in training camp and pre-season."

That process has been helped by the early arrivals who have been working out informally at the team training facility for several weeks.

"We've had a very good summer, a much better level of commitment," Bucks coach Scott Skiles said. "A lot of guys are in working hard, and we're pleased by that. Now we just hope it translates on the court. In my experience, it usually does."

Redd is among the players who arrived in early September, and he is pleased with the progress he is making after suffering a serious knee injury last season.

"I'm on the court now, doing some running," Redd said. "I'm doing basketball drills, progressing as far as cutting goes. I've been shooting for a month.

"As long as I'm healthy on opening night, that's all that matters."

Redd referred to the Bucks' regular-season opener Oct. 30 at Philadelphia. His goal is to be in the lineup that night, which would mark a dream fulfilled after he sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament and torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee against Sacramento on Jan. 24.

"When you suffer an injury like this, the first couple weeks are really dark," Redd said. "It's been a really great summer for me. Body-wise, I'm in the best shape I've ever been in. And I'm hungry to play again, too. That motivated me all summer long."

Redd takes big step
Recovery seems almost complete
By Charles F. Gardner of the Journal Sentinel
Posted: Oct. 3, 2009

Michael Redd stepped back on the Bradley Center floor Saturday for the first time since Jan. 24, when he crumpled to the court after tearing ligaments in his left knee.

The occasion was only an intrasquad scrimmage for the Milwaukee Bucks, not a real game.

But it still was a huge step for Redd, who scored 18 points while showing little rust as the Bucks players performed for an enthusiastic crowd of 5,864.

"I was a little nervous, to be honest with you," Redd said. "I felt comfortable and just played. I'm a little sore right now, which is natural, but I felt good playing again."

Redd scored the first two points for the White team, converting a layup off an assist from Ersan Ilyasova, and ended the first quarter with a long three-pointer, giving him 11 points.

He ended up playing 12 productive minutes while hitting 7 of 9 shots, including 2 of 4 from three-point range.

"People kept asking me, 'How are you going to be?' I'd rather just show it rather than say how I'm going to play," Redd said.

It also marked Andrew Bogut's first game at the Bradley Center since Jan. 31, when he was shut down for the rest of the season due to a stress fracture in his lower back.

The 7-foot Bogut had five points and five rebounds while playing 8 minutes.

"You walk away from a day like today and say a few positive things happened out there, but nothing more positive than seeing Michael Redd and Andrew Bogut on the floor," said Bucks general manager John Hammond.

Hands Off Redd: Stop dreaming of Michael Redd. That's the vibe coming from inside the Milwaukee Bucks. Redd took the floor for the first time in almost a year in a competitive NBA game environment yesterday playing 17 minutes, going 2 for 4 from the field for 7 points.

For weeks there has been speculation that Milwaukee would explore moving Michael this season, especially after he proved he was healthy and could return to the form that earned him his $17 million salary this season. Redd has one more "player option" year next season and will be a free agent in 2011 if he stays in his current deal.

Sources this weekend said that suggestions of Michael's demise in Milwaukee are way off base, saying that Redd is almost untouchable in the eyes of the GM John Hammond and head coach Scott Skiles.

The sources said that while no one is ever truly untradeable, there is no interest inside the team in moving Redd now or in the immediate future. The belief is now that Richard Jefferson is in San Antonio Redd is their anchor offensively and with his contract coming off the books soon, unless someone really blew them away with an offer that guaranteed the playoffs Redd would likely finish the season in Milwaukee. Things are always fluid in the NBA, but moving Redd further down the wish list seems like a smart play.

Redd leads Bucks past Rockets
By CHRIS DUNCAN, AP Sports Writer

HOUSTON (AP)?With every shot in the preseason, Michael Redd(notes) feels a little more like himself again.

Redd scored 18 points, Carlos Delfino(notes) added 16 points and eight rebounds and the Milwaukee Bucks beat the Houston Rockets 96-92 in a preseason game on Monday night.

Redd says he?s still moving cautiously after undergoing knee surgery in March. He hit 7 of 10 shots in 21 minutes in Houston, a solid step forward in his recovery.

?I didn?t worry much about my knee,? Redd said. ?I wasn?t thinking about it. I?ve been working hard, man, trying to get my rhythm. I?ve been trying to find it in practice, extra shooting and it went well.?

"I?m happy where I am right now, whether I?m making shots or not,? Redd said. ?Just to be on the court, moving without any pain, that means a lot.?

Redd remains one constant on ever-changing Bucks

Michael Redd didn't hesitate at what was supposed to be a challenging test of memory. Asked how many teammates he could remember from his rookie season -- way back in 2000-01 -- the Milwaukee Bucks guard started rattling off names instantly.

"Ray Allen. Glenn Robinson. Tim Thomas. Sam Cassell,'' Redd said after a preseason game against Chicago last week in Green Bay, Wisc. "Uh, Lindsey Hunter was on our team. Scott Williams. Mark Pope. Ervin Johnson. Jason Caffey ... Jason Hart. Joel Przybilla. That team was tight, so I remember.''

Redd didn't mention Rafer Alston, Darvin Ham or Jerome Kersey so technically, he gets a B (12 out of 15 correct). But then, the Jeopardy! music hadn't run out, so he didn't use his allotted time.

The next logical challenge would have been unfair: Name every teammate you've had since arriving in Milwaukee as the No. 43 pick (second round) in the 2000 NBA Draft. That's not quite like Madonna trying to list each of her conquests, but it still would require more RAM than readily accessible to mere mortals. We'll end the suspense: Redd has had 79 of them through the years, as researched by the club's media department. And that doesn't include the wannabe-Bucks who showed up at various training camps and summer leagues.

This season, Redd faces more changes still: There are seven new players among the 15 in camp. Richard Jefferson, Charlie Villanueva and Ramon Sessions -- pals and, in particular, offensive helpers from last season -- are gone. That makes it, whether he wanted one or not, another fresh start for Redd.

The Bucks' shooting guard has renewal issues of his own, coming back from left knee surgery on his ACL and MCL that wiped Milwaukee's final 35 games off his schedule. And he already had missed 14 games in November with a right ankle sprain. He was good when he played, averaging 21.2 points and 36.5 minutes. He just didn't play enough; Milwaukee was 17-15 in the games Redd started last season, 17-33 when he did not.

So far in the preseason, Redd -- along with center Andrew Bogut, recovering from a stress fracture in his lower back that limited him to 36 games -- has looked and felt good. He passed one test this week, scoring 22 points in Houston and 15 in Chicago in back-to-back games. That had coach Scott Skiles talking about boosting Redd's minutes in remaining tune-up games. "It seems like he's 100 percent,'' Skiles said, "so there's no reason not to turn it up a little bit and get ready for opening night.''

Bucks' Redd ready to roll
He's resting his sore back before opener

Michael Redd drives past Detroit?s Jason Maxiell at the Bradley Center last Friday. Redd strained his lower back during the game. .

St. Francis ? Michael Redd has waited a long time and worked quite hard since his last regular-season game.

That was Jan. 24, when he crumpled to the Bradley Center floor after tearing the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee in a game against the Sacramento Kings.

So the Milwaukee Bucks guard doesn't intend to miss the season opener in Philadelphia on Friday, despite sitting out practice the past three days with a strained muscle in his lower back.

"We've been cautious about it, to try to get ready for Friday," Redd said after the Bucks' workout at the Cousins Center on Wednesday.

But could the injury, which he suffered in the final preseason game against Detroit, force him to miss the opener?

Redd frowned and said, "No. Put me in a wheelchair and I won't miss the game. I'm excited about playing again. I've been playing in the preseason but looking forward to a regular-season game."

In fact, Redd played in all eight preseason games, and he had a team-high 23 points in 37 minutes against the Pistons at the Bradley Center on Friday.

But when he tried to practice Sunday, he knew something wasn't right.

"I couldn't move," Redd said. "There were certain moves I couldn't do, so I just scaled back and said, 'Let's treat it.' Now I can move and bend over when I couldn't do it Sunday or Monday."

Veteran Charlie Bell has been practicing with the first team for the last few days and could be inserted in the starting lineup if Redd is unable to play.

"If he (Redd) can't go again (Thursday), we'll be prepared to go on and move in another direction for the game Friday night," Bucks coach Scott Skiles said.

"If I feel we have to change that spot because Michael can't go or Michael hasn't practiced enough this week, that's the way we will go (with Bell)."

The 6-foot-3 Bell, starting his fifth season with the Bucks, said he anticipates Redd will be able to play.

Milwaukee Bucks guard Michael Redd shoots over Chicago?s Taj Gibson during a preseason game Oct. 10. Redd is ready to lead the young Bucks team that is projected by many to be one of the worst teams in the NBA this season.

..MILWAUKEE - Entering his 10th season with the Milwaukee Bucks, Michael Redd has taken on his share of challenges during his professional career.

As a rookie in 2000, few NBA observers gave Redd, a lowly-regarded second-round draft choice, a chance to make the Bucks' roster.

Then, after making the Bucks roster as a backup guard, Redd wasn't given much of a chance of becoming a full-time starter.

And, once Redd moved into the starting lineup, he wasn't given much of a chance of becoming an All-Star, which he did in 2004.

With the Bucks ready to open the 2009-2010 season Friday night on the road against the Philadelphia 76ers - Milwaukee's home debut is Saturday night against the Detroit Pistons - Redd is poised for some more daunting challenges.

One of them is trying to successfully rebound from anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament surgeries in March. Redd injured his right knee Jan. 24 against Sacramento and missed the Bucks' last 35 games.

For the 30-year-old Redd, returning to All-Star form is almost an obsession.

"I want to have my best season ever," said Redd, who has led the team in scoring the last six seasons. "I'm on a mission."

But Redd has another lofty goal: leading Milwaukee to the Eastern Conference playoffs. That will indeed be challenging because the Bucks' roster is saturated with new players.

Redd to miss at least two weeks
By Chris Sheridan
ESPN.com

Michael Redd of the Milwaukee Bucks will miss at least two weeks after experiencing soreness in his surgically repaired left knee.

Redd underwent surgery in March to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament, and he left Saturday night's game against Detroit during the third quarter because of discomfort in the knee. He underwent an MRI on the knee on Sunday.

The nine-year veteran scored only 26 points in Milwaukee's first two games, shooting a combined 8-of-25 (32 percent). Carlos Delfino and Charlie Bell are expected to see an increase in minutes during Redd's absence.

The 30-year-old Redd signed a maximum deal after the 2004-05 season, but has struggled staying healthy since, missing 90 games over the last four seasons, primarily related to his left knee.

He has a player option for $18.3 million in 2010-11.

Redd injures knee
Strained tendon nothing serious
By Charles F. Gardner of the Journal Sentinel
Posted: Nov. 2, 2009

St. Francis ? Another dunk resulted in another knee injury for Michael Redd.

The Milwaukee Bucks shooting guard will be out for at least two weeks after he suffered a strained left patella tendon against the Detroit Pistons on Saturday night.

But Redd's latest setback was not related to the major injury he suffered in January, when he tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in the same knee.

Instead, it was eerily similar to an injury he suffered in January 2007, when he dunked late in a game against Cleveland and also hurt his left patella tendon. This time he injured the knee while making a right-handed dunk early in the third quarter of the Bucks' 96-85 victory.

"It's not severe," Redd said. "Good news. I just aggravated an old knee injury I had a couple years ago. I'm going to Chicago to check it out with my doctor, but the MRI showed up pretty positive.

"I'll wait until the swelling goes down, and I'll be back out there playing. We knew that was in there from the (ACL) surgery, but we didn't touch it. They didn't clean that out."

Redd wants to play by end of homestand
By Charles F. Gardner of the Journal Sentinel

Associated Press
Michael Redd has been out since straining the patella tendon in his left knee during the Bucks? home opener against Detroit. .

St. Francis ? Michael Redd likes what he sees from a young Milwaukee Bucks team early in the season.

But the veteran shooting guard would rather be watching less and playing more.

That time could come as soon as next week, Redd said Friday, if he continues to make progress after straining his left patella tendon two weeks ago.

"That's my goal, to get back out there and play," Redd said of returning during the six-game homestand. "We'll have some practice time maybe Sunday or Tuesday."

The Bucks are 3-1 in Redd's absence, and they will be without him again Saturday night when they meet the Golden State Warriors at the Bradley Center. But it's possible he could return to play against Dallas on Monday or New Jersey on Wednesday.

"I'm still training, still trying to get it right," Redd said. "Pretty much the same story.

"I'm doing a lot more dynamic movements, testing it and putting it in positions I would be if I was playing."

Bucks athletic trainer Marc Boff said Redd would continue to be evaluated on a regular basis by the training staff and team doctor Michael Gordon.

The good news is Redd's latest injury is nothing like the severe left patella tendon strain that sidelined him for six weeks during the 2006-'07 season. That injury came after Redd went up for a dunk late in a game against Cleveland, and the Bucks sagged to a 3-17 record while he was gone.

This time he injured his patella while making a right-handed dunk in the home opener against Detroit on Oct. 31.

"My legs are in better shape than they were then," Redd said, "and they received this easier than they did last time. It's a huge difference."

Redd also is coming off anterior cruciate ligament surgery on the same knee, but he had already passed that test by playing in all eight preseason games with no ill effects.
