Bucks' Redd to give 150 dinners to families

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? Bucks guard Michael Redd will start the NBA Cares' season of giving when he hands out 150 Thanksgiving dinners to Milwaukee families on Thursday.
Redd is purchasing and distributing 2,800 pounds of turkeys along with all of the traditional fixings and will hand them out at a Milwaukee community center.

Redd's effort is also being supported by several other Milwaukee companies and more than 2,400 individuals to give more than 1,500 dinners to deserving families in the area.

Redd targets Friday for return
By Charles F. Gardner of the Journal Sentinel

St. Francis - Bucks shooting guard Michael Redd went through non-contact drills in practice Tuesday and was encouraged with his progress.

Redd, who has been sidelined since Oct. 31 with a left patella tendon strain, said he hopes to be able to go through a full practice Thursday and possibly return to the lineup for the Bucks' home game Friday night against Charlotte.

The 30-year-old Redd has missed six games and will be out for a seventh game Wednesday when the Bucks host the New Jersey Nets.

"I was just running up and down, just making sure I can cut and run and sprint a little bit," Redd said after the Bucks workout at the Cousins Center. "I'm going to try to give it a go Thursday in practice. They're throwing me to the wolves Thursday."

Redd said he is eager to return to a Bucks team that has posted a 5-3 record thus far, including a 115-113 overtime loss to Dallas on Monday night. The Bucks rallied from an 18-point third quarter deficit but fell on a buzzer-beating shot in overtime by Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki.

"We could have stolen that game," Redd said. "We had a great opportunity to finish the game off. You learn little things when you're watching."

Redd said he was elated to see Brandon Jennings' 55-point performance against Golden State on Saturday. The 20-year-old rookie fell just short of Redd's single-game franchise record of 57 points set in 2006, and Redd said he thought his record was going to be eclipsed.

"Yeah," Redd said with a laugh. "In practice two days before, he was like, 'Mike, what's your career high?' He said, 'Dang, how'd you do that?'

"I said you've got to be on. It's funny, the next couple days he's on. And we talked about it the next day, that at least we won when he scored 50 points. I didn't win.

"I was just proud of the effort he put up. The dude was unconscious, man. It was great to see a performance like that. It was marvelous."

The Bucks lost to Utah on Redd's 57-point night in November 2006, and they dropped a 126-121 overtime decision to Chicago in March 2007 when Redd scored 52 points.

Redd joked that he didn't even score 55 points his rookie year. He played in only six games in 2000-'01 under coach George Karl and had a total of 13 points in 35 minutes.

"For him to have the guts and the fierceness to take the team on his shoulders and do what he did was magnificent," Redd said.

Redd should be able to blend in upon return
Posted: Nov. 19, 2009

The perception out there is that the Milwaukee Bucks have something good going on and Michael Redd would somehow ruin it when he returns.

The reality will be different.

Yes, the Bucks are one of the NBA's best stories right now. And however spectacular Brandon Jennings has been, the overriding theme has been their team play. They are, the popular thought goes, running smoothly without a guy who needs a lot of shots and impedes the flow by monopolizing the basketball.

Truth is, at 6-3, the Bucks have won the games they were supposed to win. They are just now hitting a real NBA schedule. As much as the national media is playing a mulligan for its preseason designation of the Bucks as the second coming of the 1972-'73 Philadelphia 76ers, they aren't exactly the Los Angeles Lakers. Questions abound.

One is scoring. While Bucks have created more options with Jennings and his ability to get scorers the ball where they need it, they are in the NBA's lower half in points per game.

Even with Jennings averaging almost 25, Andrew Bogut giving the impression that his long-awaited breakout season has arrived and the bench being, for now, better than anyone had the right to expect, the Bucks remain offensively challenged.

So you're telling me this evolving team would be better off without a guy who's scored more than 20 a game rolling out of bed for the last six years?

"It's a good problem to have," Bucks general manager John Hammond said.

Michael Redd's(notes) return to the starting lineup didn't exactly work out on the stat sheet for him (22 minutes, 8 points, 3-of-9 shooting) or Brandon Jennings(notes) (30 minutes, 12 points, 3-of-11 shooting, 3 assists, 3 turnovers), but plenty of credit should be given to Redd's rust level and the excellent pair of perimeter defenders that they faced (Thabo Sefolosha(notes), Russell Westbrook(notes)). Let's give it a bit more time before we start drawing any conclusions.

REDD SITS: Michael Redd knew he wasn't himself in the Bucks' 108-90 loss at Oklahoma City on Friday night.

So he told Bucks trainer Marc Boff that he needed more rest and recovery time as he returns from a left patella tendon strain suffered four weeks ago.

Redd did not play in the Bucks' home game Saturday night against Orlando and could be out for a few more games. He scored eight points in 22 minutes Friday, his third game since returning from the injury.

The veteran shooting guard did not experience the same problems in the preseason, when he was returning from anterior cruciate ligament surgery in March. But he has not been able to shake the effects of the latest injury.

"When you play in game motion, you really find out if you're ready or not," Redd said in the Bucks locker room before Saturday's game. "Explosion is not there yet, and it's obvious. Just not finishing, not getting above the rim.

"I noticed it last night and I was able to tell the trainers, 'We need to get this right before I get back.' We're going to work toward it. Let's get it stronger and get it right."

Redd suffered the injury when he dunked in the Bucks' home opener against the Detroit Pistons on Oct. 31. He missed nine games before coming back and playing 11 minutes against San Antonio on Monday. He then played 30 minutes but struggled to 4-of-16 shooting against New Orleans on Wednesday.

Redd was in the starting lineup against the Thunder but was ineffective.

"I knew it wasn't right," he said. "Even on my layups I was switching to go off this (right) leg in the open floor and I couldn't run the way I wanted to and get out. I couldn't move. I won't play like that."

Adam Thompson 2 Cents Worth: Time to do something with Redd
November 30, 2009

The Milwaukee Bucks are hampered by lingering injuries to three starters, and yet are 8-7 at this point in the season.

The most significant statistics for Milwaukee aren't the Rookie of the Year numbers of Brandon Jennings, but this: When Michael Redd doesn't play due to lingering knee issues, the Bucks are 7-3. When he does suit up, they are 1-4.

Coincidence? I'm starting to think not.

I've been a Michael Redd backer for a while, but clearly he's not ready to get out there and perform. Either his knee won't allow him, or age is catching up to him, because he's been a non-factor in most of the games he has played in.

Trading Redd for anything of substance is going to be tough because of his crazy $18 million salary, with player option for 2010-11.

Milwaukee must simply sit its shooting guard until there are no doubts he can do everything. We've learned already that sitting Redd is better for Milwaukee than playing a hobbling Redd. That wasn't the case a few years ago.

Bucks guard Michael Redd still out with sore knee
(AP)

MILWAUKEE ? Bucks guard Michael Redd is not traveling with the team on a two-game trip because his left knee continues to bother him.

Redd strained a ligament in his surgically repaired knee in Milwaukee's win over Detroit on Oct. 31. Redd missed nine games, returned for three and has missed the previous two after soreness returned following a loss at Oklahoma City on Nov. 27.

REDD IMPROVING: Bucks coach Scott Skiles wouldn't speculate on when Michael Redd would return, but said the veteran guard was able to go through the Bucks' entire practice session on Saturday.

"He got through it, and I thought he looked really good," Skiles said. "I assume he'll practice tomorrow (Monday)."

Redd has missed the last five games after a brief attempt to return from his left patella tendon strain. He suffered the injury in the second game of the season while making a dunk against the Detroit Pistons.

Redd has missed a total of 14 games and the Bucks are 8-6 in those games.

Redd eager to play Saturday

Michael Redd drives to the basket last December. He hasn?t seen much action since, due to injury.

St. Francis ? Michael Redd is ready to try again.

This time the Milwaukee Bucks' 30-year-old shooting guard believes he is fully recovered from a left patella tendon strain, an injury he suffered in the second game of the season Oct. 31.

He missed nine games and briefly attempted a comeback in late November, but he lacked explosiveness and found it hard to jump. Redd went back on the inactive list for the last seven games.

But he will play off the bench in the Bucks' home game Saturday night against Portland after going through a full practice Friday at the Cousins Center.

"I went through a couple practices," Redd said of his regimen, which also included a full practice with his teammates Monday. "I had a lot more time to train and work on my leg, get it stronger.

"I'm not thinking about it (being idle so long). I'm just going to go play basketball and try to help this team win. I'm not going to worry about the timing. Just go play."

Bucks coach Scott Skiles said Carlos Delfino would start at shooting guard against the Trail Blazers, who will be ending a four-game swing in Milwaukee.

"In the last 60 Bucks games or whatever it is, he hasn't played in many of them," Skiles said, referring to the anterior cruciate ligament surgery that kept Redd out for the final 35 games last season. "We'll bring him off the bench and see how it goes."

Redd showed during the preseason he had recovered from the ACL and medial collateral ligament injuries he suffered in January.

But the patella injury was similar to one he suffered in January 2007, and he struggled when he returned last month against San Antonio, New Orleans and Oklahoma City.

"I'm playing healthy and moving," he said. "You can't play at this level being 70% or 80%."

REDD'S RETURN: Redd was back on the court for the first time since the Nov. 27 game at Oklahoma City.

Skiles said he didn't think it would be too difficult to work Redd back into the rotation.

"If we were 15-5 and looked like a cohesive unit every game, I might say, 'Hey, it's a little bit of a concern,' " Skiles said. "Michael's a good player, and we're happy to have another good player back.

"We hope it was maybe just some timing issues or whatever, and if he can get back on the court and get his feet back under him, he can shake out of it."

Michael Redd put together his finest game of the season, dropping 25 points and even finding Andrew Bogut and Ersan Ilyasova for baskets in overtime. Whether or not Redd could mesh with the new-look Bucks has often been a topic of debate for fans this year and there were signs against the Lakers that this could work out.

Redd's back in the game Not a starter, but he contributes
By CHARLES F. GARDNER

Michael Redd is back on the floor for the Milwaukee Bucks but not in the starting lineup.

Bucks coach Scott Skiles said Wednesday night that Redd's role would be determined by his play in upcoming games, as the veteran guard works his way back from a pair of knee injuries.

Carlos Delfino started at shooting guard for the third straight game as the Bucks played the Los Angeles Lakers at the Bradley Center.

"Playing in a game is progress," Skiles said of Redd playing 29 minutes against Portland on Saturday. "I thought the other night was a step forward. If he continues to play well, we're certainly open to putting him back in the starting lineup. And we're not opposed to bringing him off the bench as well."

Redd missed the final 35 games last season after tearing the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee.

He made a determined comeback from that injury and was playing well in the preseason. But in the Bucks' home opener on Oct. 31, Redd injured his patellar tendon while dunking the ball against the Detroit Pistons.

Redd missed the next nine games and returned for three in late November but was ineffective. He went back on the inactive list for seven games before returning against the Trail Blazers in the Bucks' double overtime victory.

He entered the game Wednesday with 3:55 left in the first quarter and immediately defended Lakers forward Ron Artest.

Top 10 NBA Draft Picks of the Decade
By Adi_Joseph
Wed, 12/30/2009

As the final hours of 2009 come upon us, NBADraft.net has taken to listing off the best picks of the past decade. The list is based on the value a player provided at his given pick spot in the draft. For instance, an All-Star picked 15th is more common than a starter picked 50th

mredd01.jpg

Michael Redd

1. Michael Redd - 43rd pick in the 2000 draft by Milwaukee
Career stats: 20.3 ppg, 19.8 PER, 1x All-Star

The merits of some of the other players on this list may be greater than Redd's, but the former All-NBA third-team shooting guard lasted all the way until the middle of the second round of the worst draft in the lottery era. The bottom line is this: when healthy, Redd is one of the league's best sharpshooters. Without injuries, he could have followed right in line behind his mentor Ray Allen for the Bucks. But even with the injuries, the former Ohio State star was clearly the best player in the 2000 draft, an absurd and arguably unprecedented feat for such a low pick. Redd was a gold medalist for Team USA in 2008, one of just two players not selected in the first half of the first round to represent America in the games, joined by another player on this list. Injuries have slowed Redd down dramatically in 2009, but he still serves as a shining reminder of how valuable a second-round pick can end up being.

Top 10 NBA Draft Picks of the Decade | NBADraft.net

The Redd Conundrum: What should the Milwaukee Bucks do with guard Michael Redd? He's on the books for a ton of cash - $17 million this season, $18.3 million in 2010-11 – but he just hasn't been healthy much. In fact, Redd has played in more than 53 games just once in the last four years and already missed 16 games this season.

And now Coach Scott Skiles sees him as a player he can bench at will.

There was a time when Redd would be on the floor no matter what, when his presence was integral to a Bucks victory. Unfortunately for the Bucks and their fans that time seems to mostly be before Redd signed his six-year, $90 million contract back in August of 2005. That first year of the contract Redd averaged career-highs of 25.4 points (eclipsed the next year) and 2.9 assists, then the next season – injury-shortened to 53 games – Redd poured in his career-high of 26.7 points.

Since then Redd had still been productive when he played, but he hasn't seemed his same self. He was a step slow on drives and while his shooting is still deadly it just hasn't been as effective.

This year Redd has played only 13 games, scoring 11.5 points a game on a paltry (putting it lightly) 33.6% shooting from the field, and only 26.7% from three-point range.

Then, last night in a loss to the Charlotte Bobcats, both Redd and center Andrew Bogut weren't taken off the bench the entire second half. True, the Cats were up by a decent amount, but the team did claw back without their perceived stars.

"I was real surprised," said rookie guard Brandon Jennings. "I thought once we got it down a little bit, we were going to bring them back in, you know Bogut and Redd and them."

Ostensibly this was because neither Redd nor Bogut were giving much attention to defense, something that is a serious crime on a Skiles-coached team. For Bogut it's a crime anyway; he's a decent defender. For Redd? Perhaps not so much, since he never has been considered even a passable defender.

Not playing defense is not what got Redd benched; not making shots is what did it. If Redd, a player who made his name and earned his contract on the basis of being a dead-eye shooter with the quickest trigger around, cannot make shots he's not worth the Bucks having on the floor. He's never been a great passer, isn't much of a rebounder, and doesn't play defense.

In short, if Redd isn't making shots, he's a $17 million liability. So what do the Bucks do with him if they don't think he's worth playing? Is someone going to trade for him at those dollars if he isn't hitting jumpers? Highly doubtful.

Yes, Redd COULD become a free agent after this year. He has an Early Termination Option on his contract after this summer, meaning if he exercises it he would be bypassing $18.3 million for one season in favor of free agency. Think that's going to happen? Yeah, probably not.

The Bucks may very well just be stuck with Redd and hope he can somehow return to the form that earned him all the money in the first place.

Guard struggles since returning from injury
By Charles F. Gardner of the Journal Sentinel

"I've been in funks before, but this is a little different. I'll find my way out of it," - Bucks guard Michael Redd. .

Michael Redd never thought he would simply jump back into the lineup and start scoring 25 points a game.

The Milwaukee Bucks guard knew he had work to do after suffering different injuries to his left knee during the past year, including anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament tears that required major surgery in March. Then he strained the patella tendon in the same knee in the home opener Oct. 31, providing a fresh setback.

But the 10-year veteran never thought it would be like this, either.

"I've been in funks before, but this is a little different," Redd said. "I'll find my way out of it."

Redd is hoping 2010 will prove to be the year he returns to health and is able to play again at a high level. The Bucks desperately need him to do it, and at age 30 he faces a critical time in his career.

He has seemed slow and often tentative on the court since returning from the patella injury Dec. 12. Redd has played in the last nine games and been up and down, with the highlights being a 25-point night against the Los Angeles Lakers and a 32-point effort against Washington.

But in the last three games he has hit just 5 of 25 shots, including a 3-for-12 outing against Orlando in the Bucks' 117-92 loss Wednesday night.

"I hate to put any excuses on it," Redd said. "We all know what I came back from. I'll keep fighting; I won't dwell on the negative.

"I've just got to keep playing, keep playing, keep playing, and it will click. My confidence is never hurt. I have to stay in the gym, work my way out of it. And in the games I have to continue to find my way through our offense."

Redd scores 27 as Bucks top Thunder 103-97 in OT

MILWAUKEE (AP)?Michael Redd(notes) doesn?t feel like he?s back at full strength since undergoing surgery on his left knee and missing Milwaukee?s final 35 games last season.

Redd appears to be awfully close after scoring six of his 27 points in overtime Saturday night to help the Bucks snap a four-game losing streak with a 103-97 victory over Oklahoma City.

?You know what, even though I don?t think I?m basketball-ready yet ? I love the end of the game,? said Redd. ?I want to take the big shot always. I thrive on it.?

AP - Jan 2

Redd had scored only 14 points combined in the previous three games, and Milwaukee generally has played poorly when he has been on the court. He has missed 16 games with injury this season, and the Bucks are 4-11 when he plays and 9-7 when he doesn?t.

?I?m getting used to playing basketball again. Period,? Redd said. ?Tonight was a good night. A good step for me.?
