SG Jordan Sibert (Atlanta Hawks)

I was pleased with Siebert's showing tonight. Shot %50 overall (4-8) and from 3pt (3-6), with 5 Rebs in 19 mins. Looked smooth and showed good effort. Favorite sequence was when he blocked an alley-opp pass, got down the floor for a back door offensive rebound, and put up a shot that was tipped in by another player. Looks like he's got a good understanding of the game. The fact that he hasn't gotten much playing time to this point is a good indicator of how much talent is on this year's team.

Sibert, who had played a matter of seconds in the two previous games, had no doubt that defense was what was expected of him. He ran down a meaningless breakaway in the second half and was called for a foul after blocking the shot out of bounds.

"I could have just relaxed, but I felt I wasn?t going to let them get an easy layup or an easy dunk," he said. "It?s just making the extra effort, and I think we?re all starting to do that. It?s starting in practice."

Matta "knows nobody?s perfect. He doesn?t expect anybody to be perfect," Sibert said. "He just wants us to play hard. I think as long as we show we can play hard and give it 110 percent every time we go out there, we?ll get more and more playing time as the season goes on."

Matta said Sibert is "coming. He's practicing well."

"I felt like today we were telling him what to do and he was doing it. We?ve just got to get it (to be) instinctive, that he knows, 'Hey, I?m in here, I?m going to get up, I?m going to use my athleticism, I?m going to push up, pressure, I?m going tip-deflect.'"

You can tell Matta wants him to be a part of the rotation, along with Thomas, but still does not trust them yet in close games. I sort of understand since I don't think either are complete players yet, but they have huge upside. Hopefully they continue to learn and they can turn this team into an eight man rotation (which is perfect IMO).

Who's the new guy? Sibert provides big spark

The minutes column on Jordan Sibert's stats sheet could be a row of ugly, little scars on his psyche.

Two minutes against Wisconsin. Three minutes at Penn State. One against Illinois. One at Minnesota. None at Northwestern. The only games in which the Ohio State freshman has played a significant number of minutes - the 11 he played against Purdue on Jan.25, for example - were blowouts whose outcome had been decided for so long that half the crowd was already home.

Yesterday, then, was Sibert's coming-out party. The former Cincinnati Princeton star, who was probably the third-ranked player in a lustrous freshman class headed by Jared Sullinger and Deshuan Thomas, suddenly found himself on the floor with 9:46 remaining in the first half and Ohio State nursing a 16-12 lead over Michigan.

Thomas had already gone in for Aaron Craft when he picked up his second foul, and now Sibert was replacing Lighty, who had been called for his second. Three minutes later, Sibert stole the ball from Stu Douglass at midcourt and went in for a spectacular two-handed slam.

The pressure was off. His defense improved. The stiffness that Sibert sometimes shows when he is given two minutes during garbage time melted away.

"That felt amazing," Sibert said. "People don't really realize how deep it is when you just sit on the bench for a while and you watch, and then you get out there and the only thing you're programmed for is, 'You wanna shoot.' But when you get out there and get a steal and do something as powerful as dunk the ball, it makes you feel like, 'Hey, now I'm playing. Now, I'm in the game.'"

Nice to see Sibert step up and do the job when his team needed him. That's not easy to do when you rarely play. Who says we have no depth? :)

I was very curious yesterday to see how well Jordan played and I wasn't disappointed. I thought he shot in rythym and stuck to his defense very well.
For not playing much this year I thought he was in sync with the team while he was in.
Between Him and Thomas we should have a smooth transition next year.

Lighty quote from Buckeye Battle Cry Sibert preview:

Last season his teammates saw the talent he possessed as a freshman, including David Lighty, who thinks Sibert will be a key part of the Scarlet and Gray future.

He?s going to be a special player. All freshmen kind of go through these things. You can ask all the guys who?ve been here, from Will (Buford) sitting the bench a lot his freshman year, me sitting the bench a lot my freshman year, to Dallas (Lauderdale) and Jon (Diebler). We always tell him, ?We?ve been through it.?

2011 Basketball Preview: Jordan Sibert
October 16, 2011, by Joe Dexter

There is no doubt that Jordan Sibert?s accomplishments on the court as a freshman were heavily overshadowed by the solid seasons of fellow teammates Deshaun Thomas, Jared Sullinger, and Aaron Craft.

Every time the young guard made his way to the court though, he made it count. Despite only scoring double digits once last season, the*Cincinnati native looks to work his way into the rotation* with an even more important role in the upcoming 2011-12 season. He might not be the a starter when the season begins, but should be a key contributor off the bench and play some significant minutes at both the shooting guard and small forward positions.

Hometown: Cincinatti, OH
High School: Princeton HS
Position: Guard (2/3)
Year: Sophomore
Height: 6-4
Weight: 180

High School Awards:

- 2010 Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Ohio (2010).
- 2010 First Team All-Ohio.
- Associated Press Southwest District Division I player of the year (2010).

A four star recruit out of high school last season, Sibert was ranked as top ten guard of the 2010 class nationally by Rivals.com and the best incoming shooting guard in the Big Ten heading into his first year as a Buckeye. A teammate of Jared Sullinger and Aaron Craft at the AAU level, Sibert committed to Ohio State almost immediately in 2008, after visiting the campus for the first time. Considered the best pure shooter of the 2010 Big Ten class, it became clear early last season that the youngster had some talent in the back court. But in short time, it also became clear there are parts of Sibert?s game he needs to work on.

His minutes per game are more than likely to double this season, as the Buckeyes look forward to the challenge of replacing David Lighty and Jon Diebler. With Shannon Scott in the mix, this team now has a true point guard. That gives Sibert an even better chance to spell William Buford at points and Aaron Craft when he is off the basketball. In his short minutes last year, he provided a huge spark in ball games with big plays and top notch energy. It wasn?t until March though, when we saw his full potential. Seeing an increase in playing time due to foul trouble, Sibert put together flashes against Michigan on March 12th. Sure he only scored 2 points in 11 minutes, but his defensive ability on the court kept the Buckeyes in front heading into the locker room at the half. And it was his electrifying dunk with 6:45 remaining in the half off a steal out of the hands of Tim Hardaway Jr. that really set the tone to the future. Last season his teammates saw the talent he possessed as a freshman, including David Lighty, who thinks Sibert will be a key part of the Scarlet and Gray future.

Watching Sibert grow on the court will be one of the most enjoyable experiences of the upcoming season. He has the talent and drive to become the next great Buckeye guard, and with Thad Matta, Chris Jent, and Jeff Boals teaching him the game, the sky is the limit.

2010-11 25 8.36 2.08 29.0 25.0 53.3 0.56 1.0 0.04 0.4

Strengths:

The one thing that sticks out for Sibert is his ability to shoot the basketball. An excellent spot up shooter, number 2 also knows how to find the basket by slashing past defenders on his way into the paint. He also has shown since he broke his leg in high school, that he can slash and dish ? drive to the hoop and pull up for the inner perimeter jumper or find the open man on the screen. Sibert brings an offensive energy to the court that nearly matches that of Aaron Craft.* A lot of that has to do with his explosiveness with the basketball in his hands.

This year though, his focus could be on filling the void of graduating senior Jon Diebler. Sibert has the range to be an effective three point shooter, and comes off screens pretty well. He will still need to work on his jump shot with Chris Jent, to become more consistent, but he could figure into the outside game a lot more than fans anticipate. The beauty though of Siberts strengths is while he can make that shot, he is one of the more better open court players in this recruiting class. That gives the offense options, and allows Sibert to take what is given to him. As he works his way onto the court more, it will be imperative that he uses his ability to create opportunities for his teammates.* Something he has a lack of experience doing at this level of basketball.

Weaknesses:

The one thing that Sibert struggled with in limited time last season was his presence on the defensive side of the floor. Whether it was in zone or man-to-man, at times the freshman looked stiff and uncomfortable covering other guards on the floor. A lot of that has to do with the adjustment of speed in the game from high school to college, and a lot of it simply has to do with not getting enough repetitions against top tier talent. No matter what was saw on the court, practicing with the like of David Lighty last year as well as Aaron Craft and Jon Diebler could only improved his timing and on the ball skills. Those battles will continue into practice before the season, and it wouldn?t be surprising to see the sophomore come off the bench in defensive situations.

If he molds himself into the defensive player Thad Matta demands on the court.

William Buford has raved about Sibert?s defensive ability this off-season. If he can put that together completely, it will be hard for this coaching staff to keep him off the floor. There is a lot of talent in this back court. Jordan Sibert could be the spark plug that the Buckeyes need, but weren?t expecting coming into 2011.

I wasn't very impressed with his shooting last year. I know he's a great shooter, but it never really showed in the games. Call it inconsistency, call it "not clutch"... he just didn't have "it". Lighty was right on in that he was only a frosh, so he has a lot of room to grow and get better, but theres no doubt this team is going to miss Diebler and his consistent shot. I hope what we're all hearing about Sibert is right on, but I'm going to keep my expectations on Sibert fairly low going into the season because Diebler's shoes are going to be awfully hard to fill.

I think a lot of his inconsistent shooting can be explained by him sitting on the bench for so long and coming in stiff and not having his touch. Starters and players right off of the bench get to go through the warm-ups and then immediately get out there with a feel for their shot.

I can only give partial blame of his inconsistency to that though. At this level you have to be ready to go whenever you are called upon.

The encouraging thing about Sibert is that he shot similar as a freshman than Deibler did as a frosh. If he works hard, he should develop into a very solid role player this season and a starter for the next two.
