Daequan Cook was drafted by the Miami Heat largely for his shooting ability. But that doesn't mean the NBA rookie is done learning that craft.

Cook, a Dunbar High grad and former Ohio State basketball player, attended former pro Mark Price's shooting camp near Atlanta. So did his young Heat teammates Jeremy Richardson, Marcus Slaughter and Devin Green.

CONFIDENCE BOOST
First-round draft pick Daequan Cook said his confidence is growing with each preseason game. He led the Heat with 10 points in Saturday's loss to the Bobcats.
But Cook said he still has plenty of work to do to gain coach Pat Riley's trust and earn a spot in the rotation. Cook is a long shot among the candidates to fill in at shooting guard until Dwyane Wade returns from offseason knee and shoulder surgeries.
''Coach is giving me a lot of time and a lot of looks and I'm just trying to show what I can do,'' Cook said.
``It's intense for me right now because I want to show that I am capable of playing this season.''

RealGM: Wiretap Archives: Heat Rookie Cook Destined For D-League?

October 14, 2007 - 9:24 am

Miami Herald - Pat Riley said last week that rookie Daequan Cook -- a long shot to crack the rotation -- "is not making a lot of shots in practice or games", and indicated he eventually might send him for a 20-game stint in the NBA's developmental league.

Cook spent one season playing college basketball for Ohio State.

Butterflies aside, Daequan Cook still shooting

By Ira Winderman | Staff wrier October 21, 2007 MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Grizzlies guard Mike Conley laughed at the comment, if only because he knew better.

Among the reasons Heat coach Pat Riley said first-round pick Daequan Cook got off to such an uneven start this preseason was because he arrived as "a little scaredy cat."

Conley, who teamed with Cook last season in Ohio State's backcourt, found that hard to believe.

"He's a real confident guy," said Conley, who was selected fourth in the June draft, 17 picks ahead of Cook. "He's a guy who can bounce back."

No matter the roots of the transformation, Cook has grown into a far more confident prospect as the Heat closes out the preseason.

Heat aquire forward Davis: How it affects Daequan Cook

From Wire Reports

How the trade affects Daequan Cook
Where does Miami's acquisition of Ricky Davis put former Dunbar and Ohio State star Daequan Cook?

Well, Cook was drafted to provide perimeter shooting but he struggled in the Heat's exhibition games. Then over the last three games, he improved. Cook's 34 attempts over the past three games are the most by anyone on the team.

By Mark Gokavi

Daequan Cook is officially an NBA player.
The former Dunbar High School and Ohio State basketball standout made the Miami Heat's 15-man roster Monday.

"I worked hard and I feel like it's paying off," Cook said. "Coach (Pat Riley) made cuts (Sunday) and said this is the team he was going with."
The 6-foot-5 guard practiced Monday morning and then went to Subway to get Alonzo Mourning a sandwich (a cold-cut sub, barbeque chips and two oatmeal-raisin cookies).

His year here will have dented his self-confidence a little. Some people judge Cook unfairly, forgetting that he really helped in the recruitment of Oden and Conley. I, for one, really hope he does well in the NBA.

Dressed in his No. 14 Miami Heat jersey, the thought struck Daequan Cook when he saw good buddy Michael Conley Jr. in a Grizzlies uniform.
During the Oct. 20 preseason game in Memphis, the friends chuckled about their NBA dream coming true.

"He came out for shoot-around and we looked at each other like, we couldn't believe it," Cook said. "Playing against each other was kind of funny, too."

Cook knows role for NBA opener

By Mark Gokavi
Staff Writer

Thursday, November 01, 2007

Called a "scaredy-cat" by Miami Heat coach Pat Riley early during the NBA preseason, Daequan Cook had to shake the nerves.
"I had to just be more aggressive and attacking," said Cook, a rookie. "That's what I was doing at times during games and practice. Then I broke out of my shell."

The former Dunbar High School and Ohio State guard knows his role: "Playing hard, playing great defense and making open shots."
