Miami Heat: Can young players, such as Daequan Cook, crack lineup?

BY MICHAEL CUNNINGHAM

[FONT=Verdana,Arial, Helvetica]MIAMI -- There is some question as to whether Daequan Cook will be ready to be a regular contributor for the Heat.

Considering Heat coach Pat Riley's preference for veterans since the team added Shaquille O'Neal and aimed for championships, the real question might be if Riley will give Cook a real chance to do it regardless.

The Heat on Friday introduced Cook, its first-round pick in Thursday's NBA Draft. Though Riley hasn't relied on the last two first-round picks, forwards Dorell Wright and Wayne Simien, he insisted Cook and the other young players have a legitimate shot at cracking the rotation.

"They've got to be players," Riley said. "Be better than the players in the rotation and force me to play them. We have a lot of veteran guys, and when I stand up and walk down the bench I always lean to the guy I am more comfortable with.

Cook gives Heat outside shooter

By CHRIS PERKINS
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

MIAMI ? Heat rookie guard Daequan Cook left Ohio State for the NBA after his freshman year, a season in which he only started one game. Not only that, but also he averaged 9.8 points per game and wasn't particularly impressive in the second half of the season.
Yet the decision to leave school was an easy one. And Cook, the Big Ten's Sixth Man of the Year, claims it was based on his skill, and not an obligation to financially help his family.
"If I felt like I wasn't ready I was going to go back (to school)," he said at his news conference Friday.
Cook is 20 years old. But he's also 6-foot-5, 210 pounds and the man of the house as the eldest of Renae Cook's four children. While some might say the past few years have gone quickly, Renae said it's been the opposite.

Heat first-round pick Cook gets first taste of NBA play
By TIM REYNOLDS
AP Sports Writer

ORLANDO, Fla. - Daequan Cook believes his shot will always be working. So Miami's first-round pick is instead spending his offseason focusing on defense.
And after one summer league game - a glorified scrimmage, really - the Heat are already noticing Cook's commitment on that end of the floor.

Cook scored 13 points in 23 minutes Monday in Miami's 88-74 loss to the Charlotte Bobcats on the opening day of summer-league play in Orlando, but also earned high marks for his work guarding last season's No. 3 overall pick Adam Morrison, who went just 2-for-6 from the floor and had Cook guarding him most of the time.

"I felt comfortable out there," Cook said. "I missed a couple shots but I got in rhythm the second half. I competed. That's what I came out there to do. I felt like I played great defense ... felt like I had an all-around great game."

Cook learns 'D' first

Top pick Daequan Cook's assignment for his first summer-league game was defense on Adam Morrison, not his shooting.

BY MICHAEL WALLACE

ORLANDO --
Daequan Cook was acquired by the Heat in the first round of the NBA Draft primarily because of his long-range shooting. But it was Cook's defense that quickly came into question when he got his matchup assignment from Heat summer-league coach Erik Spoelstra before Monday's opener against Charlotte.

Heat's Cook gets first taste of NBA game

The team loves the upside of their hot-shooting rookie from Ohio State.
Kyle Hightower | Sentinel Staff Writer July 10, 2007 Two weeks ago when former Ohio State forward Daequan Cook heard his named called in the first round of the NBA draft, the first word that went through his mind was "fortunate."

That's because for all the success Cook experienced during his freshman year with the Buckeyes last season, in last month's draft he held the rare distinction of being a first-round draft choice despite a college season in which his minutes went down as the year progressed.

But in a league that is becoming more driven by potential, the Miami Heat definitely love the upside of the hot shooting 6-5, 210-pound guard. Continued....

cook should return, becuz he'll fall off and get sent to the free agents quick

#1 He can't return...he entered the draft, so that ship has sailed

#2 He got picked in the first round...could he have bettered his draft status had he come back next season, probably...but he went first round and has his guarenteed contract to do what he has always wanted to do in life. It's hard to blame him or second guess his decision after it worked out the way it did for him.

#3 Saying "he'll fall off" and sent packing is baseless speculation. Even if that's your opinion, then I doubt him (Cook) staying one more year of school would change that opinion you have of his work ethic / skill / development...so why wouldn't he go this year and make his guarenteed millions over the next 3 years anyway?

I think he had confidence in his abilities, gambled that he sneak into the 1st round and was correct...I'm thrilled it worked out for him.
