SF LaQuinton Ross (Memphis Hustle - NBA G-League)

Ohio State men’s basketball: Ross can help with more consistent play, Matta says
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
SUNDAY OCTOBER 13, 2013

  • KYLE ROBERTSON | DISPATCH
LaQuinton Ross, right, came into his own late last season, especially in the NCAA tournament, when he averaged nearly a point a minute.

After coming off the bench to score 53 points in 61 minutes in three NCAA tournament games last spring, and soaring onto the radar of NBA draft mavens, LaQuinton Ross quelled Ohio State fans’ fears by saying he would return for his junior season.

It wasn’t an easy decision, though.

Leaving “definitely crossed my mind,” Ross said during the Buckeyes’ preseason media day last week. “But I had to sit down and talk to my (family and confidants) and figure out what was best for me.

“I did have a good tournament, so I think I probably would have had a pretty good chance of (being drafted). I don’t know what number that would have been, but I think I would have had a good chance.

“But I decided to come back thinking I could have an even better year and add on to that.”

Ross will have to play more than last year, and surely his production will increase significantly as a result, but after watching the practice I'm not sure he will start this year. He still has some of the same struggles as last year in terms of problems finishing through contact in the paint and as a result throwing up some wild layup attempts. DT was very good at taking a bump and powering through it - that is an element that OSU probably lacks this year since Q isn't that kind of player and neither is Amir or Trey really. With Shannon Scott coming on and playing really well, Matta might opt to put him in the starting lineup instead. I liked that Ross wasn't turning it over in practice, I think he should be improved in that category and he might shoot the 3 better this year as well.

Ross’ hand looks healed
Today was the first time in about a week that LaQuinton Ross’ right hand was out of a cast, coach Thad Matta said after the Buckeyes’ exhibition over Walsh.

Ross made good use of it, scoring 15 points to share team scoring honors with Lenzelle Smith Jr.

Matta said he did not know what caused the injury, and Ross was not made available to the media.

“Something in his right hand on the top,” Matta said. “There was nothing on the MRI, just some inflammation, and it’s obviously gone down. I thought he looked pretty decent offensively today, but it’s been kind of a challenging week for him.”

While Ross was decent on offense, he has to “continue to lock in on his defense and not only see what is happening but what is going to happen," Matta said. "That’s one of the biggest things I’m constantly on LaQuinton about.”

The junior also needs to communicate better.

“You could hear him out there today (calling) ‘Screen,’” Matta said. “Well, is it screen left or screen right? Those are the little things” he has to pay attention to.

6. I want to see LaQuinton Ross take a game over, even for a short spurt. A lot has been said about his role as the guy who will do the most work in replacing Deshaun Thomas’ scoring, but he hasn’t yet shown me flashes of having the ability to put Ohio State on his back. I have seen spurts of athleticism when it comes to taking it to the rim off the dribble and his pretty shot stroke, but I can’t be the only one who thinks Ross has been a little underwhelming so far this year.

Q can score more when they run more stuff for him. He is not quite like DT, a guy who could just create his own shot at almost any time. Q needs more help from his teammates to get in position where he can attack the basket or get an open shot. Right now it looks like they are happy with the offensive balance against the teams they've played so far and don't feel like they really need to get Q to go off to win these games, so they have him playing within the flow of the offense like everybody else.

After reviewing the OU game, it is apparent that Q will need step it up big time on the defensive end in future games if OSU is going to come close to reaching their goals this season. Many of the breakdowns where OU got an easy shot in the second half, Q was largely responsible for letting it happen. Gotta be engaged and into the game on both ends of the floor. I don't think all the NBA early entry buzz in the offseason was a good thing for Q with the way he has started out, but I will say it looks like he will be a lot more consistent offensively this year and he has cut down on his turnovers dramatically.

Q has been on fire the past few games. Hopefully he will bring that the rest of the season. Although IMO he got the benefit of a few questionable calls/no calls that helped him put up 6 or 7 more points than he probably should've gotten against CCSU.

that is all right that he got away with some fouls with little pushoffs. He still shot the ball very well from the outside but I agree I hope it continues.

Guess I'll be the first to comment on LQR tonight. He's too often the invisible man and becomes a liability. For someone with all the talent and ability that he has, he just doesnt seem to have that superstar drive. He really has to find a way to get his head right and become a leader. He wont pass Craft as a leader on this team but he has to find that quality from somewhere inside. He's too damn good to have games like tonight.

Captain obvious obviously states, we really need Q to turn it on.

He is the difference maker. You know pretty much what you are going to get from guys like Craft, Scott, and Amir. Smith's game can be helter skelter as well, but Ross has the ability to take a game over, but he has to stay menatlly engaged on both ends for that to occur and some days he has it and somes days he doesn't. Hopefully there are more games when he does have it.

Played extremely soft last night. I would have thought that he would have learned from last year that when you play the big boys you have to match their intensity. He really needs to pick his entire game up in conference play or his minutes will diminish quickly.
