SF LaQuinton Ross (Memphis Hustle - NBA G-League)

Very surprising, but great news!

Is he a legit 6'8"? I know OSU will need all the size they can get if Jared goes pro after this year.

Ross will be in the league at the same time as JS if not before, not to mention he doesn't play the post.

I'm not saying he's going to play "the post" (another one of my posts says I think he will be used at the 3/4 interchangeably with Deshaun), what I am saying is this team needs all the size it can get because if Jared is 1 & done, OSU appears to be weakest (by far) at the 5 position and it would be best to get as much size at the other positions to help pitch in. If you are saying Jared is not 1 & done, then I totally disagree with you there - he's going to be a lottery pick after this season, so he would only stay if he really wants to (and we OSU fans should know that very few basketball players stay in college when they can get drafted in the first round). I don't know if Ross would be much help in the paint defensively, but certainly there are a lot of tall wings out there that help out big time with rebounding & that's what OSU would need - hopefully Q has that ability.

Just further proof of how great of a recruiter Thad and his staff are. Its one things to capitalize on strong Ohio classes like in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2010(Cook, Lighty, Buford, Diebs, Mullens, Kosta, Sully, etc). Its another notch above that to grab great talents from surrounding midwest states(Oden, Conley, Turner) but in weak years for Ohio like 2011 and 2012 Thad is showing that he can recruit nationally with anyone.

Shannon Scott, Ross, and at least one top100 national big will make a great 2011 class and I have no doubts that Matta and Dickerson can pull it off in 2012 as well by dipping into Indiana again and going national for most of the rest of the class.

Then in 2013, we look to have another extremely deep Ohio crop, with Loving already in the bag, Hayes probably to follow and a slew of other top talents.

OSU men's basketball: Recruit hopes to fit mold of Turner
Tuesday, August 17, 2010
By Bob Baptist
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Evan Turner is gone but not forgotten.

Ohio State coaches have been selling the chance to be the next Turner to a number of recruits this summer. One of them bought in last night.

LaQuinton Ross, a 6-foot-8 wing from Jackson, Miss., who will be a senior this year at Life Center Academy in Burlington, N.J., told two recruiting websites that he has committed to sign with the Buckeyes.

"I like what they did with Evan Turner, and that was a big reason why I committed," Ross told Rivals.com, referring to the 6-7 junior guard who was the No.2 pick in this year's NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Ross Picks Ohio State

It wasn?t planned, but LaQuinton Ross verbally committed to Ohio State on Monday.

?Yes,? Ross, who averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds last season at Burlington (N.J.) Life Center, said by phone.

The 6-foot-8 Ross, a Murrah, Miss., native who last year transferred to Life Center, chose Ohio State over West Virginia and Baylor. He is the No. 14 small forward in the Class of 2011.

?He talked to Thad [Matta] and decided to commit. It was not planned,? said Life Center coach Wilson Arroyo. ?He told me it just felt like it was the right decision. He liked the way Thad will use him on offense, like a guard.

?He will bring versatility on offense because he can shoot the long ball, mid-range jumper or post up. Defensively he has the ability to guard the big guards, small forwards in the post. He will bring instant offense and Thad Matta knows how to utilize wing players.?

LaQuinton Ross - Yahoo! Sports

Not many players come along with Ross' length and skill set. At 6 feet 8, Ross is a great scorer with his ability to shoot from deep as well as slash to the basket. Capable of getting his shot off at will, Ross also has a great feel for passing. He is improving as a defender and rebounder as he continues to develop physically.

The fact that he plays on the same AAU team as Rodney Hood (Ross is originally from Mississippi) could be great news...

A little late to the party but welcome to the Buckeye nation LaQuiton :groove2: You certainly surprised a lot of people but that does not take any tarnish off of your verbal commitment.

I think he might be the only basketball The Ohio State University has gotten from the state of Mississippi.

I will have to check again but Ross at least had Ohio State on his list but the last one that I saw regarding Hood there was no mention of us:(

I will have to apologize to Wad for questioning his post about Cook's AAU teammate Hood. According to Rivals, Ohio State is the only school north of the Mason-Dixon line that is recruiting him by no other than Dave Dickerson:)

Shun Jenkins came from Itawamba Community College in Mississippi, although he was from Georgia originally.
