I really like Tate's chances to earn a role as a freshman. Just seems like the type of guy Matta loves to play and will give a lot of minutes to, maybe not right away but eventually. He's like Lighty and Craft in the sense that they aren't necessarily particularly skilled players offensively when they come in as freshmen but Matta has to find minutes for them because of their energy, toughness, and athleticism. Tate will probably be the perfect type of freshman to bring in off the bench and help give somebody a rest - probably will have a role like Lighty had in '07 from the get-go.

My daughter's boyfriend just got diagnosed with a torn labrum. The orthopedist told him the surgery would be for a repair and the recovery time with rehab would be 6-9 months.

Hopes to a speedy recovery Mr. Tate.

Sorry to hear that especially when tournament games are just about to begin. I guess on the bright side he is young and in good shape so hopefully he will heal a little quicker than the average guy and be ready by October at the latest. Just a bad way to end a really good sense.

I've had surgery for a torn labrum. The labrum is a piece of cartilage that helps resist the shoulder from popping out of the socket. If you hold your arm straight out away from your body, and then move your arm back (while keeping it straight) while keeping your relatively torso still, your should joint presses forward a little. If you place your hand (from the arm that isn't straightened) at the joint, you can feel the joint press forward. The labrum is helping to resist the shoulder from popping out of joint during that motion.

You will often see a wide range of recovery times for labrum repairs. There is a great reason for this. One of the tendons from the bicep actually ties into the labrum, and it is common for the tear to happen at that point. (as seen in the image below) If that happens, the tendon is cut and reattached at the bone. Tendons take around a month to attach to the bone, and until they do, they are very fragile. This surgery is the one that takes 6-9 months to heal from. This happens a lot in basketball when you stick your arm out to brace your fall. If the tear is in a location where there is no need to bother with the bicep tendon, the recovery time is much faster. I've seen players in the NBA be out only a couple weeks with a torn labrum.

I think Matta is falling in love with him and his effort.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Thad Matta couldn't help but grimace a bit. That's probably the best facial expression to make when describing Jae'Sean Tate's game.

Tate is tough. He's physical. He's not afraid to get to the rim ... Better to just let Matta explain it.

"He's got a pretty good feel, a knack for angles," Matta said. "He's pretty explosive too. When he gets the ball down there, something is going to happen. He's going to get fouled or he's going to get a good shot on the rim ... You like what he brings to the table."

Has trouble finishing around the rim and needs a little work on his shot, but his energy on the boards and cleaning up near the rim is fun to watch. And to wit, we have plenty of shooters so I am not too concerned...it will come. Huge amount of potential and his effort is off the charts. Really excited for this young man's future.
