Ohio State's Jae'Sean Tate was ruled out for the season Feb. 23 after suffering a torn labrum in his left shoulder. He missed the Buckeyes' final seven games of the 2015-16 season and Ohio State missed the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2008.
Tate is on track to be full-go and completely cleared for all basketball-related activities by August, he said Thursday, but in addition to the labrum injury which he has been rehabbing now for months, Tate also recently underwent a different operation on his right ankle to remove what he called "a loose piece of cartilage" that bothered him for nearly all of last season.
It was a minor procedure, but currently has Tate in a walking boot for another week or so, he said. Athletic trainer Vince O'Brien said Tate had the minor surgery three or four weeks ago and this particular injury won't affect his rehab for the shoulder injury.
Tate fully intends to be full-go within the next few weeks when August rolls around.
“It was just an ongoing thing throughout the season,” Tate said of the ankle procedure. “It wasn’t like I needed it, but it was annoying. I’m not able to be full contact until August, so I might as well get both of them knocked out in the summer. I think it was just good to do it now since I wasn’t able to practice.”

As Ohio State played the final seven games of its turbulent 2015-16 season, Jae’Sean Tate sat on the bench and watched with his left arm in a sling.
Tate had surgery to repair a torn labrum in late February — he also tore his right labrum as a high school senior — and could not be on the court as the Buckeyes attempted to make a late-season push for a NCAA tournament berth. But without him, Ohio State simply wasn’t the same team and the Buckeyes stumbled down the stretch to miss the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2008.
It was difficult, no doubt, for Tate to sit and watch. But as it turns out, Ohio State’s emotional leader gained a totally new view of things watching from the sidelines.
“It sucked, it did. But looking back, it also had some plus to it,” Tate said Thursday at Big Ten Media Day. “I got to see the game from a whole different perspective than I ever had before. I saw things sitting on the bench that I don’t see when I was playing and I tried to help my teammates along with what I saw to help them.
“It hurt just because we were probably one or two games away from being in the tournament, that hurt a little bit, but it also made me and my teammates hungrier for this year.”

Almost everything Holtmann has said so far seems like a joke to me....I'm sorry. I am having a hard time taking this guy seriously. Maybe he isn't in over his head, maybe he'll become a great recruiter/coach, whatever. To even suggest you might play Tate at the 1 this year? That would lead to one of the ugliest products on the court I've seen in some time. Tate has minimal handle, a flat jumper, and excellent rebounding skills...so let's have him run the offense up top?
Suggesting Tate might play some 2 to get the other bigs on the court at the same time makes sense, so I'll concede that much.

I think Tate at PG would only be a couple mins here and there of him bringing the ball up court if CJ needs a break, foul trouble, etc. No different then him running a fast break off a rebound as he'll just run up court like the picture above then pass the ball to a wing in the half court set. I image KBD would pick up the pg on defense.Holtmann throws out the idea of Tate as a PG.

Yeah I don't see Tate being the 1 bringing the ball up consistently. He was always an outlet to bring up the ball when other teams pressured the inbound. He seems to fit the mismatch that the other team would sag off of during inbounds plays. Hell Shaq would bring up the ball because you're not gonna have a big pressuring that far away from the basket. That's how I view his stance. Just get the team into an offensive set.

habanero, you may want to take a chill pill. holtmann has been running the program for not even three weeks. i'm not going to hang the guy already for spitballing. the returning starting point guard is a juco transfer who started not even a third of the games last year. his other point guard is an unheralded 5'10' true freshman who had only one high major offer. i like cj and braxton, but let's be realistic here. holt knows that the strength of the team will be the wings, so he's searching for ways to exploit whatever advantage his personnel may have. that's going to take some imagination. i mean, seriously... the team went 17-15 last year and lost 3 of its top 4 scorers. holt needs to make a bomb, but all he has is a gum wrapper, paperclip, and match striker.
holtmann putting tate at the point would be like when ohio state faced tennessee in the '07 tournament. despite osu having conley and butler, the volunteers' full court press was killing us. so what did matta do? he brought oden up to tennessee's foul line for the inbounds pass. was that conventional? no. was that situational? yes. did it work? absolutely.

That's what I was thinking too. It will most very likely be only a situational/emergency type deal for maybe a couple of minutes a game tops.
If they had Tate out there running the point for like 10-15 minutes a game THEN I would start to question the coaching and what the heck they were thinking.

There's advantages to having him play PG as well....namely, if he can protect the basketball enough to minimize turnovers he becomes an instant mis-match offensively, while now allowing us to play with more length defensively.
The other thing it does, is it likely gives us a huge rebounding advantage on both sides of the court, and judging by how Butler plays, extra possessions are critical.
Listen, I'm not calling Tate, Scottie Pippen.....just saying there's nothing wrong with a "point forward". Can he shoot from the outside? No...but neither can Shaun Livingston or Ricky Rubio.
I don't think it's prudent to EVER question outside the box thinking in basketball. It often leads to the best results.
