Not down on last nights performance at all.

There was an expectation that he would have a Conley type of year.
But, Mike Conleys are few and far.
David had a normal freshman type of year.
Play defensive minutes and learn the college game.
I haven't seen anyone express disappointment with Lighty this year. And at the risk of getting too far off-topic, I don't think many people expected Mike Conley to have the kind of year's he's had as a freshman. I know I didn't.

People were expecting big things from the TEAM.

Lighty really asserted himself out there on both ends of the floor. His whole demeanor is different the much of the rest of the team - he's more intense. And, in a game where the rest of the team came out very flat, his intensity finally caught on.

Huge minutes, and a great sign. I think Lightly will be a leader of this team as early as next year just because of his intensity and on-court work eithic. He'll be a great example to Evan Turner.

David Lighty's Tournament Thoughts

Saturday, March 24, 2007

Ohio State freshman David Lighty, a Villa Angela-St. Jo seph grad, is periodically letting us in on his first NCAA Tournament experience. Friday, he spoke of his two crucial shots against Tennessee in Thursday's 20-point comeback and 85-84 win - a 3-point play off a drive to end the first half and his 3-pointer that tied the game at 79 with 2:50 to play.
I knew time was running out on the [first-half] drive, so when they kicked it to me, they were kind of in my face, so I tried to get to the rack. I think that was a real big momentum booster because we came out in the second half and had a 12-2 run that got us right back in the game.

Beautiful first half by Lighty yesterday... awesome to see him progressively get better from the beginning of the year to playing his best ball in the tournament!
Well said and just when we need all of them to play big.

Bob Hunter commentary: Name the need and Lighty's right there to satisfy it for Buckeyes

Thad Matta likes to talk about a conversation he had with freshman forward David Lighty during one of Ohio State's first practice sessions. "I went to him and said, 'I don't know how we're going to shake out here, but the one thing I do know is that we're looking at you as a versatile guy positionwise,' " the OSU coach said. " 'And I've watched you for two days here, and if you continue to embrace defense, I think you'll be one of the greatest defenders ever to play at Ohio State.' "

David Lighty, freshman forward

On his defensive mindset

"If you go in and think you are going to be beat, you will. You have to have a defender's mentality going into a game to be a good defender. I know I have to be focused this weekend because it's a business trip."

On Ohio State

"Early in the season, we noticed we had something special as a team that could take us far if we played the way coach (Thad Matta) wanted us to. Everybody wanted to go to the Final Four. That was our dream. It just shows hard work pays off."

Tell Gregg your opinion!

ATLANTA -- The most important player in the Ohio State locker room is being ignored. The media is in here Friday and they have Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr. surrounded, leaving a vast emptiness in front of the locker of David Lighty.
Nine days out of 10 -- or, more accurately, 37 games out of 38 -- Lighty isn't the most important Buckeye. Or the second-most important. Or one of the top five or six.
But this is Ohio State's 38th game of the season, and this one is against Georgetown, and Georgetown's best player is either too big or too quick -- or both -- for every OSU defender. Every OSU defender but one, that is.
David Lighty is the only Buckeye who has a shot at stopping 6-foot-9 Hoyas forward Jeff Green. I'm not saying Lighty can stop Green. I'm just saying that Lighty, a 6-6, 215-pound defensive specialist, is the Buckeyes' best shot.

MEN'S FINAL FOUR
David Lighty's Tournament Thoughts

Saturday, March 31, 2007

Ohio State freshman David Lighty, a Villa Angela-St. Joseph grad, is periodically letting us in on his first NCAA Tourna ment experience.
"Earlier in the week, there might have been some moments like, 'We're in the Final Four,' but it settled down, and now it's just preparing for Georgetown and trying to get a win. None of us care if we're an underdog, because we believe in ourselves. I think we're always loose and always having a good time, but at the same time we know when to get serious and get ready for our opponent.
"I don't have to score for this team to win, and as long as I shut my man down, that can give us an edge. I most likely will play Jeff Green, there's a good chance I will, and I'll be ready for it. He's probably the toughest matchup I've seen because he's a big man who can go inside and outside. He can step out and hit the 3, and he's 6-9, so he can post you up, and he's strong. And you saw the game-winning shot he hit against Vanderbilt, so he's versatile. Brandan Wright from North Carolina was tough, but he doesn't have as much outside game as Green has.

FOX has a nice article on Lighty & Cook:

Don't overlook Buckeyes' Cook, Lighty

ATLANTA - They were a part of the Thad Five, but Daequan Cook and David Lighty have almost become The Forgotten Freshmen.

Early on, the 6-foot-5, 205-pound Cook was averaging about 25 minutes per game and going for 20-plus points. He scored 22 in his first collegiate game against VMI and had 22 a week later against Eastern Kentucky.
But his playing time started to decrease as the season wore on, primarily because of his defense. When he's not making shots, it's been difficult for Matta to keep on the floor.
"That's the main reason why I'm not playing as much," Cook acknowledged. "I'm making some mistakes defensively ? things we've gone over a thousand times in practice. I'm still making them." Cook is averaging 5.2 points in his last six games, but didn't log a single minute in the second half of the Buckeyes' Sweet 16 win over Tennessee. He was, however, a key contributor against Memphis with nine points and two steals in 16 minutes.
"We don't win the game without him," Ohio State assistant coach John Groce said of Cook's performance against the Tigers.

Despite his inconsistent play, Cook is the team's most prolific 3-point shooter. He's making shots beyond the arc at a 42 percent clip, and Matta will need Cook against the Hoyas.

Lighty's role may be even more important. While Ohio State will almost certainly play quite a bit of zone defensively, Lighty could be assigned to the task of having to try and contain versatile junior Jeff Green when the Buckeyes go man-to-man.
Lighty, who averaged 25.5 points a year ago at Villa-Angela St. Joseph High in Cleveland, has gone from a scorer to a defensive specialist. He understands it and doesn't mind a bit. ``It really doesn't matter," Lighty said. "As long as I'm happy, that's all that matters."

Defense not to be taken Lighty

ATLANTA -- Shortly after the team assembled in the fall, before playing time was divided and roles were sorted out, Thad Matta couldn't help but be impressed with David Lighty's defense. He sometimes gets lost among the hustle of Greg Oden and the bustle of Mike Conley Jr., but not back then, two days into team practices.

''If you continue to embrace defense,'' Matta told him in the fall, ''I think you'll be one of the greatest defenders ever to play at Ohio State.''
