This. To add to it- which league was infamous for roster management back in the scholarship era? Which league went first and guaranteed the kids all 4 years ?
I don't often get hung up on the gray area of morality but there is a right way to treat the players and there is the way the SEC does it (and apparently Cignetti would like to-sleazy uncle vibe giving off motherfucker that he is).

I sense sarcasm, but in case you're sincere, I think there's a difference between 2025 high schoolers and college departures battling all spring/summer...
And the guy they replaced suddenly returning. Technically you're taking reps away from a returning guy with a transfer but he's not automatically benched the way he would be if an NFL guy comes back (even a fringe one )
I think it makes sense for Caden Curry to be able to stay 5 years if that's more stable. I just think Caden, his replacement and his position coach should know that rule going into the spring. That's the biggest problem hefd.

My original thought was that the more you restrict where people come from to join your team, the fewer people would want to join your team. If you tell them that if they leave, that door will never be re-opened, it might tell new nerds to stay away.
But your point was really good and I hadn't thought of it. You can tell a player that he's still welcome to come back, just not as a player. You can say that when he chose to move on, he was also saying that he can be replaced.
I think I was assuming there's infinite room for infinite nerds. But infinity isn't a real thing in this case. There is a limit, and teams should be encouraged to protect the ones who made the commitment to be here through the spring and summer, rather than the ones who left after the bowl games. (Or before the bowl games.)
