SEC (It just means more.. even its losses are wins)

SEC rights deal is a huge risk IMO. Especially if Disney wins out. Disney is banking on the fact that sports programming is currently undervalued and will see a boost from the streaming model that we are clearly headed towards. They have pushed their premium programming (CFP playoffs, MNF) to ESPN for a couple of reasons. The short term goal is to milk as much money as possible for as long as possible from cable companies, who subsidize these costs on the backs of non sports watchers by including the ESPN family of networks in basic cable packages. Long term, they - along with anyone else who is paying attention - knows that this model is going the way of the dodo. They are banking that they are going to generate the enough revenue from sports watchers willing to pay the unsubsidized cost of the programming to make up for lost cable subscriber revenue. I don’t see that happening. As someone else said, this is going to drive more people to piracy.

I think that we are at peak dollars for sports television rights. The networks are going to lose their asses as cord cutting continues. Next, the leagues are going to feel the crunch when they can’t get same dollars as before and subsequently in pro leagues CBAs will be highly fought after as players and owners fight over how to slice a pie that is getting smaller for the first time.

Disney is willing to subsidize sports as a loss leader because they are betting on the future. If the future they envision doesn’t come to pass they are going to jettison ESPN - no matter how much money their other IPs are generating.

Yup, and frankly, I'm totally with you. Linear TV as we have known it is a dying medium that has long been propped up by largely non-measurable advertising budgets. Now, because of the prevalence of addressable media, everything is being held to a higher standard. Advertisers are recognizing that they are way overspending in non-addressable TV and budgets are moving to more cost effective platforms.

If there's a sure bet here... it's betting against linear TV and any incremental revenues associated with expanding budgets for the media.

The mouse is playing with fire and going to end up getting burned if they push too many chips to the center of the table.

I swore I saw an ESPN/SEC lovers game day sign somewhere on BP, but I can’t find it. Greenies for anyone who can share this phenomenal sign....

Apparently, pushing a guy 10 yards out of bounds, throwing him down, ripping off his helmet then stomping on his face is the equivalent of targeting.

Tennessee’s Jauan Jennings suspended for first half of bowl game for sideline stomp

Well, I guess we wouldn't want to deprive the young man of the entire Who-Gives-A-Shit Bowl experience. After all, it just means more.

hey at least their consistent.
tossing bitch punches, grabbing a guy by face mask and throwing head first into a brick wall is the same penalty.
