with today's news, I think the Auburn coaching job falls to the bottom of the heap.

cheating can't even produce a winner there apparently, and with possible probation on the horizon, not sure any coach worth a shit would be willing to even touch this job.

crazy conspiracy theory warning:

What if the reason Auburn has sucked recently is do the the investigation payments to players who were promised payments/casino freebes have stopped.

disgruntled, uninterested, and offended players ticked off about not getting what was promised is leading to less effort and less concentration on the practice field and in the film room.

My fear is Hoke settles into lloyd carr 9-3 seasons with losses to Urban and OSU most years, so they go crawling to Harbaugh. Even with his criticism of the school you'd have to think he'd feel a pull back there. I feel we've gotten lucky on their last two hires that they didn't even seem to look at an excellent coach with roots at the school.

Name one successful NFL coach that has left the pros to go back to coaching in college. Harbaugh isn't leaving San Francisco. He has called the Bay Area home for a while now, and he's perfectly happy coaching in the pros, not having to deal with kids and recruiting. He isn't going back to ann arbor (the whore).

anything is possible in that place.

the moment Bama rose from the ashes of sanctions and began winning again, everyone knew it was only a matter of time before Auburn ramped up their cheating again to try and keep up.

my guess is that they just suck that bad. with or without payment.

and CheeseDick should be all but unhirable now.
24-37 without Cam

the guy before and the guy after him at Iowa St. were both more successful than he was.
Tubby was more successful at Auburn than him, and unless they dig up Curley Hallman, the guy who follows him will probably do better as well.

a combination of being the shittiest coach this side of Charlie Weiss and puting a school through 2 investigations for cheating ought to eliminate him from the discussion for a while.

now that the 4 have made their choices, how would you rank the hires?

personally i'd go:

  1. Butch Jones to Tennessee (i think this guy has potential to be a damn good one)
  2. Stoops to Kentucky (no i don't think he'll be great, but this is Kentucky 6 wind twice a decade will get him a statue on campus)
  3. Malazahn to Auburn (jury still out on him as a HC. he's a good OC, but without Cam, that O was average at best even when he was there).
  4. fatboy to Arky (i honestly thought they would get someone closer to Petrino's coaching style. that's what this team is built for and easiest path to winning again)

Personally, I am not blown away by any of the hires. Had Strong gone to Tennessee, then that would have definitely helped your conference. But because of that miss, meh.

None of them is a home run. I think Bielema has the makings of a train wreck in Fayettenam, and I think Mark Stoops could surprise everyone in Kentucky. Malzahn is a cipher; how do you know after only one year as a D1 head coach?

Safest hire IMO was Butch Jones. He's been competent, never spectacular, everywhere he's been.

Agreed. Tennecheat needs someone who can get them back to going 9-3 before they can take that next step anyway. Jones is the guy to do that I think.

Stoops has a low standard, I think he'll get there. Bulimia and Malzahn won't be employed at the same school in 4 year or so.

I'd rank them like this:

1 - Malzahn (Ark St was much better late in the year)
2 - Stoops
3 - Jones (he's basically an 8-5 coach at Cincy, which should make him a 5-7 coach at Tennessee)
4 - Bielema (because he's a classless idiot that will reap what he sows) yes, that that can be pronounced "soes" or "sowz"

Right now I'd agree with that order, if only because I think Butch is the safest higher of the group. His ceiling isn't as high as Malazahn or Stoops, but there's less potential for disaster.

I think Burt to Arky is going to be a dumpster fire and oh so much fun to watch.
