Seantrel Henderson (Buffalo Bills)

Guess who I ran into in the elevator while at the Marriott City Center in Minneapolis????

Looks like USC is in town to talk to Mr. Henderson, although if the visit was today it might have not gone as well as Mr. Kiffen would have liked. 7:30 and back into the hotel (changed his clothes) as he was not in a suit and up in the concierge lounge pouring himself a drink. I can only assume the other guy he met up in the lounge was Ed O.

The latest video (sportsillustrated. cnn.com/video/si) of Cretin-Derham Hall offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson's experience at the Army prep all-star game in San Antonio, by local multimedia producer Vince Muzik, has received some 25,000 views on SI.com. That's 20,000 more than SI.com's NFL insider coverage during the same period.

This week, new Southern California football coach Lane Kiffin will visit the 6-foot-8, 335-pound Henderson at his Minneapolis home. Florida already had a coach in this week, and Henderson will leave Friday for a final recruiting visit to Miami.

Where will the prospects go a week from today?

A week from today, dozens of the country?s top college football prospects will announce their college choice on national signing day.

One exception will be Sporting News Top 100 RB Lache Seastrunk, who will go a bit earlier, announcing today at 5:15 p.m. ET at his high school in Temple (Texas). He?s expected to choose Auburn, LSU or Oregon, though Cal, Texas, UCLA and USC haven?t been eliminated.

When sent a text message Wednesday morning, Seastrunk responded to Sporting News saying that he won't have any hats in front of him for tonight's announcement, and he declined to say which schools are his finalists. Seastrunk playfully added that he didn't know what the celebration plans would be after the decision was made public.

Here?s a look at the best five prospects available on or around National Signing Day.

OL Seantrel Henderson, Cretin-Derham (St. Paul, Minn.)?Like Seastrunk, Henderson hasn?t publicly eliminated any schools, but Ohio State and Florida are two strong candidates, while Minnesota, USC, Oklahoma, Iowa and Miami are other contenders. He?ll announce on signing day.

Henderson, Jeffcoat and more battles

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

With signing day so close, it's time for the weekly (every Wednesday) top 10 list. This time out: the most intriguing player chases.

1. Seantrel Henderson, OT:

In the mix: Florida Gators, Minnesota Golden Gophers, USC Trojans, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Miami Hurricanes, Ohio State Buckeyes

The nation's No. 8 prospect -- and top O-lineman according to ESPN -- plays for a tradition-rich prep program in Minnesota that has been a pipeline to Notre Dame in recent years (WR Michael Floyd was ND's biggest catch from Cretin-Derham Hall), and initially many expected the agile 6-foot-8, 320-pound Henderson to head to South Bend.

But things have been chaotic with Henderson for months and have been especially wild since two of the schools that figured to be among his top options, Notre Dame and USC, have undergone coaching transitions. And, somewhere in the mix of all this turnover was Urban Meyer's uncertain month and subsequent leave of absence. Home state Minnesota also has had some staff shake up on offense, although his coach told the Star-Tribune that "the U's back in it." (Henderson is actually taking his final official visit to "The U" down South this weekend.)

"We haven't seen anything like this and we've had some big-time players come out of this school," Cretin-Derham coach Mike Scanlan told Shandel Richardson here, also pointing out that Cretin-Derham is home to pro stars such as Joe Mauer (Minnesota Twins), Heisman Trophy quarterback Chris Weinke and tackle Ryan Harris (Denver Broncos). None garnered as much recruiting attention as Henderson, who is generally regarded as the nation's top prospect.

Richardson makes the point that Miami could have at least one built-in advantage when the big OT comes to South Florida. "Henderson is expected to attend Sunday's Pro Bowl, (which) will be filled with several former UM players. In fact, a record 10 Hurricanes were selected to play."

My hunch is that with so much uncertainty, you'd think it would help Ohio State's chances to land Henderson since things in Columbus appear rock steady with Jim Tressel. But don't count out the Irish or the Trojans. Henderson met with ND's O-line coach Tuesday and is expected to get visits from new USC coach Lane Kiffin and Tressel later this week. Henderson also will meet with UM coach Randy Shannon in Minnesota when he visits the Cretin-Derham Hall campus Thursday.

My guess: Ohio State.

Ask Jamie: Which prospects will land at USC?
January 27, 2010
Jamie Newberg

How do you see USC finishing out? The Trojans only have 14 commitments to date and seem to be kind of all over the place.
- Billy from San Diego

USC is recruiting several big-time prospects such as five-star offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson, five-star wide receiver Markeith Ambles and five-star linebacker Christian Jones. The Trojans have a real shot with Henderson

Ask Aschoff 1/27

...
What about Seantrel Henderson. Do we have I legit shot?
? robf

From the beginning, I honestly never thought Henderson would be in Florida?s class. When he told me over the summer that he hadn?t ?spoken to anyone? from Florida, it just seemed like the staff knew from the start that he was a long shot. I was told earlier this week by another source that the general thought is that Florida?s staff started to back off Henderson ?weeks ago? because the chances of getting him were so slim. He showed interest after finally getting on campus in December, and defensive end commit Ronald Powell reportedly worked him very hard at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio. But Urban Meyer?s health issues might have scared him. Those concerns might have pushed him away just enough to put Ohio State and USC at the top of his list.
This one was tough for Florida from the beginning, and I think the staff was smart enough to court him for as long as they could. There?s no point in investing everything in a prospect that a staff doesn?t have a great feeling about.

Will BT coaching stability help recruiting?
January, 27, 2010 Jan 273:14PM ET
By Adam Rittenberg

...
For example, take a guy like Seantrel Henderson, the coveted offensive lineman from St. Paul, Minn. Henderson has Notre Dame, USC and Florida in his final pool of choices -- two programs that underwent coaching changes and another that did and then didn't. He's also looking at two Big Ten programs, Ohio State and Minnesota. Both programs retained their head coaches, and in the case of Ohio State's Jim Tressel, he's in no danger of being dismissed any time soon.

Stability is a reason why colleague Bruce Feldman predicts Henderson will end up as a Buckeye. Feldman writes: "My hunch is that with so much uncertainty, you'd think it would help Ohio State's chances to land Henderson since things in Columbus appear rock steady with Jim Tressel."

Henderson's father recently told Scout.com: "We are very concerned about stability within every program. Coach [Urban] Meyer is very personable and we liked him a lot, but that off-and-on retirement definitely shook up Seantrel. He had formed relationships with players going to Florida, and same with USC, and then it seemed like he had to start all over. Florida, and USC, are both great schools, and it remains to be seen how the coaching changes will effect things."

The coaching changes could steer a few more elite prospects toward the Big Ten.

man..i really hope the Henderson's see through Lane Kiffin's song and dance

My sentiments exactly... Kiffin in nothing but trouble. I think the guy would do anything to get his way, no matter who he had to screw over in the process. I would love to hear Bob Knight's opinion on Lame Kiffin...it has to be comparable to his opinion of Calipari. If Seantrel (and his dad) value the opportunity of playing under a coach with class then that bodes well for the good guys and not so good for USC.

Cretin-Derham Hall tackle Seantrel Henderson, named the offensive player of the year in the country by USA Today, will make his final college visit this weekend, going to the University of Miami (Fla.). Henderson had visitors from Southern Cal in his house this week, when new Trojans head coach Lane Kiffin and his father, defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, recruited him. Former Gophers and Redskins center Ray Hitchcock, who coached the Cretin-Derham Hall line and accompanied Henderson to the All-American Bowl in San Antonio, believes Henderson is giving the Gophers serious consideration.
