Say, whatever happened to...?

I can see it as the beginning of the end... when the only contributors are electing to leave... you lose a couple dozen more and it's over

You can't sign in without 3 or 4 threads in the poli forum staring at you.. same posters... same stuff... same approach... same bullying...

create a Facebook group you folks can go to... cuz you're ruining one many of us used to love

PS don't believe it's simple to segregate feelings and attitudes from one forum to another... read jlb's input again... he didn't get those views in the football forum

I say again, if the poli board is ruining BP for you, stay away from the poli board. I mean, I don't think anyone is demanding anyone else go in there and participate. As I said in my prior post, the reason the board has remained open over the last ... what.. 13 or so years is so that politics doesn't boil over onto the other forums. I know, as a mod, we've always been very strict about keeping the other boards free of politically motivated posts, and I'll be frank - I don't see any spillage even today. Now, I can't speak for jlb or anyone else, but for me it is that easy... I disagree with your politics, for example, but when you're talking about what you've learned about Rutgers, as an example, I don't give two good goddamns what your politics are.

If the poli board dies its own death, so be it. Shutting it down would be a mistake, which is, again, something we have discussed at length multiple times over the years. And.. not going to the board isn't that fucking hard. I took a good 4 or 5 years off the board cuz I was tired of the right wing circle jerk present at the time.

There are a number of members since the resurgence that occurred in 2004.. when Vanilla Gorilla hung it up...
members for 13 years... same members continue to be responsible for most of the major financial contributions

Three of the major contributors have either taken sabbaticals or left (TBD)
A number of other LONG standing contributors very rarely post any more... which should be of concern..

BP has $677 to date... and 15% of that was Mili...

I'm not a heavy poster but have been a BP loyalist forever. I can't stand the poli forum and don't really engage in it. But it has changed my BP habits tremendously. I made a smart-a$$ comment in there a few months ago about it and I think a comment was made about removing the poli from Spy, maybe it was in jest as well? I use to read BP for hours a day, I bet I don't spend 20 minutes on it now. And when I do I have to sift through the majority of posts that are political.

I am not advocating for closing the poli forum down, just saying it's changed my BP consumption.

Why are you so worried about people's donations?

Who made you the site accountant?

Maybe make the Poli boards "opt-in" like the H&HG (or opt-out for Spy readers), so that we don't have to always be so aware of and see these endless conversations are dominating the collective psyche of BP. Someone gets too political on the regular boards, an admim gently nudges him into a nice padded room with the other poli loons.

Great post. I agree.

(seriously)

Or, you could quite simply move the Poli from this forum to the bottom of the page of forum lists. There would be no reason for anyone to see even the most recent post topic unless they chose to deliberately scan down the forum lists and go there. Otherwise, it would be pretty easy to completely ignore its existence. If someone keeps going there and reading the posts and being offended, well, whose fault is that? Don't read the posts there if they bother you.

And, btw, if there are members whose attitudes are off putting to you (with the exception of staff) there's a simple solution to that, too: Ignore them.

I think a lot of posters use Spy to scan all the BP channels at once, and it's pretty hard to ignore an active conversation there. Same thing for a "New posts" reader like myself: new posts pop up top regardless of forum.

I do agree about making use of the Ignore feature as needed, but I wonder, does the forum software also allow for some sort of "Ignore thread/forum" option? Just a thought.

That's where ignorance gets me--I've never used Spy.

Forum Ignore is a really good idea, though.

I come here to escape the reality of life for a few minutes at a time and just indulge in my guilty pleasure of focusing on something as stupid and pointless as football at the, temporary, exclusion of the things that really matter in this world.

IMO, we lost a lot of that as more and more people started getting into the poli forums. I venture into them now and again but generally try to keep it respectful/lighthearted or just bust balls.

What I can't believe is how nasty it gets in there. People take that [Mark May], and themselves, much too seriously for my taste. It's mostly a right vs left, good vs evil world view where people can't just agree to disagree without it getting personal.

There are people to the left of me like @kinch, @OH10 and @ExpatAkronite whom I disagree with mostly in terms of politics and social outlooks but whom, as individuals, I respect and enjoy hearing from. Likewise there are folks like @MililaniBuckeye, @BoxCar_Willie or @buckeyemania11 who are equally far to the right of my particular views but whom I feel the same way about. (If I left anyone out it isn't a personal slight, I am just grabbing names off the top of my oft befuddled head).

The perspective I try to keep is that we are all Buckeyes and that is what matters. I am willing to put aside pretty much anything I don't care for real world, for short periods of time, to keep it socially normal with a fellow Buckeye. This is why I have zero patience for scUM fans on here (or the fact they draw breath in general but I digress).

If we lose that, or if we have lost that, then I'd personally have to reconsider what BP is all about to me. I can just go to work or turn on the news (fake or not) if I want a face-full of the issues of the day.

Worrying about recruiting, depth charts, the upcoming schedule and wishing hate on tsun, these are the things that matter & why we are here. If we can't all do those things together because somebody is carrying a grudge form the poli forums then what the fuck are we doing here? I enjoy Mili's contributions to football talk as much as I enjoy @jlb1705. If we lose either guy because of bad blood from poli forums then we are all worse for it imo.
We need to eliminate the fucking off-season...not the poli board.
