San Francisco 49ers (official thread)

Maybe Saleh really likes Trey Lance and the Jets want him. Because Brock Purdy is the best QB on the roster. Honestly... he's looked as good as Jimmy ever has in SF from what I've seen. Has some really good mobility too. Really good feel for how much time he has to throw the ball. Super impressed. He's not just playing the system, he made big plays today that directly resulted in TDs. They're getting playmaking from the QB position and not just a game manager. We're seeing what this team's ceiling is, and they're hot at the right time. Pumped to see the Niners play the Bengals in the Super Bowl. (Bengals haven't lost since October)

Two of Brock's TDs would have been sacks if Jimmy was out there. He just can't evade like we saw today. Not really even trying to shit talk Jimmy. Brock Purdy is just passing all the eye tests, stat tests, everything. Dude has it.

EDIT: Also just found this story on ESPN with some pretty cool tidbits:

First rookie QB to win a playoff game since Russell Wilson in 2012
Youngest player in NFL history with 300+ passing yards and 3+ TDs in a playoff game (passed Marino)
Third player ever with 300+ yards and 4+ TDs in his first playoff game (M Stafford, K Warner)
7 consecutive games with multiple TDs ties Justin Herbert for the most in NFL history for a rookie (also tied Steve Young for second longest streak in SF history)
First player picked last to score a TD, ever

He's got the cliché "it factor." Helps when his vet teammates are totally buying in on him, too. Watching him over 6+ games, I actually count him as a strength on this team...which given his story, is remarkable. He rarely looks like a rookie, let alone a rookie last guy picked in the damn draft. Seems like a super humble kid, too.

I've been critical at times of Shanahan but man, yesterday he was absolutely ridiculous in terms of play design and play calls. On almost every play there was someone wide open. Purdy didn't even play that well and had monster stats. Doesn't hurt they have all the weapons they have but he gets credit for that too

Shanny is equal parts evil genius and bottomless frustration. When he's on, he's the best game planner/play caller in the league...if not the sport. Other times he seems to buy into his genius label and tries to show he's the smartest guy in the room and it bites him in the ass. He's a savant at finding assistant coaches. He's maybe as good at identifying under the radar players that he squeezes crazy production out of. I get so hyped for him as a HC, then he goes out and has a game that makes you wonder if he was drunk. Take the good with the bad I guess. I'm just hoping we don't see the bad again til next fall.
Purdy> Jimmy G.
I say this as a Jimmy G defender and fan...Brock Purdy is 100% the better alternative to lead this team. Jimmy has his moments, but they're peppered with too many "wtf" moments in between. Purdy has been nothing short of a revelation. Maybe he has a stinker coming up, but he's playing like a savvy veteran and has the playmaking ability Jimmy has always lacked.

I agree that Purdy is the better option or at least no worse but...I do think that McCaffrey really unlocked something in this offense and Jimmy basically didn't get to play with him. Who knows how he'd look now with him

That's definitely fair. I said when they acquired CMC that, if he could stay healthy, he could definitely unlock some truly explosive aspects of the offense. Agree, who knows how Jimmy would have performed given the opportunity to build chemistry with CMC. That said, one dimension Purdy has unlocked is the ability to extend plays with his legs. On multiple occasions Saturday, he ended up hitting wide-open receivers after extending the play by moving around in, or rolling out of the pocket. I'm not sure most of those plays would have been there with Jimmy at QB. Purdy isn't likely to pick up a lot of yardage with his legs, and he's not a threat with his legs along the lines of Josh Allen, but he's proving very adept at avoiding pressure and giving his receivers time to get open by moving around when necessary.

Given how poorly the OL played at times, him protecting the ball and not turning it over at all was incredibly impressive. And he’ll get better as he gains experience.
When he rolled left and launched downfield for Ayuk early on, I knew he was dialed in. Wasn't a completion but he was only about 2 feet off from 50 yards out. Kid has skills
