San Francisco 49ers (official thread)

The guy has lead deep playoff runs with Jimmy G and Brock Purdy as his QB's, so in that sense I'm willing to give him a bit of a pass. His ability as a coach is pretty evident. As a talent evaluator? Maybe a bit of a different story, but it was clear from his time in CLE, he was no fan of Manziel.

So I can't help but feel it's a wash for him. As for Lynch? Since he took over he's 2 -4-1 as a GM for 1st round picks. (still on the fence about Aiyuk) But his top 5 record is not good, including the Lance pick and surrendering future draft capital.
Lynch has his cheerleaders in the media…keep him from the slings and arrows other GMs dodge.

Fortunately for Lynch, he's done a nice job finding gems later in the draft. Take away the Lance idiocy, I'm very happy with him as GM. But the Lance deal is a doozy. Purdy needs to be the Dude or else his legacy will be one of the dumbest trades in NFL history. Purdy becoming a star at least mitigates it.

That was an incredible draft, too. Pretty much every pick after #3 until the middle of the round is a good player at worst. Any of those guys would have not only made more sense, but are better than Lance. Sadly though... they probably would have ended up with Mac Jones. lol

4) Kyle Pitts
5) Ja'Marr Chase
6) Jaylen Waddle
7) Penei Sewell
8) Jaycee Horn
9) Patrick Surtain
10) Devonta Smith
11) Justin Fields
12) Micah Parsons
13) Rashawn Slater
14) Alijah Vera-Tucker
15) Mac Jones
16) Zaven Collins

Yeah. I don't really want to think about that anymore.

I'm optimistic about Brock Purdy. Yeah, he didn't exactly go up against a murderers row during the regular season, but he didn't make the schedule and he was outstanding. What makes me feel better is that he played extremely well in the postseason and was excellent in pressure situations. Watching his film, he wasn't just lucky. He made some big-time throws and his mobility and ability to extend plays is real. Also, I don't recall many "wtf, man?" throws that Jimmy was notorious for. He seemed to really have that "it" factor and the rest of the team bought into him 100%.

All that said, I'm not ready to crown him. The list of NFL QBs who had one sensational season and then fell off the map is a very long one. I'm hopeful that he's the real deal and one of those really rare gems that is picked low and then just blossoms in the NFL. But, I'd be lying if I said I'm not a little nervous. It's not an understatement to say that the Niners season hinges on Brock Purdy. What he proves to be will tell the story. I have almost zero confidence in Sam Darnold if Purdy falters.

I know this ain't your father's Stillers team, but the Niners are looking like a Death Star.

9 straight regular season wins against the Rams. I'd say Shanny owns McVay.

Purdy is now 10-1 as a starter, and the 1 is when he got hurt after going 4/4 against the Eagles. I am curious how his stats compare to the rest of the league over his 10 healthy games, so I did some sports mathing.

In his 10 healthy games as a starter, including playoffs (this excludes some trash time and the playoff start, which would actually improve his stats overall):

10-0
147/220 66.8%
18 td 3 int
2280 yards
17 sacks
23 carries 59 yds 3 TDs

That, over the course of a season, translates to:
250/374
31 TDs 6 INTs
3876 yards
29 sacks
39 carries 101 yards 6 TDs

For comparison's sake, those passing numbers in 2023 would have put him at 10th in yardage, in between Trevor Lawrence and Jalen Hurts. 4th in TDs.

Not saying he's going to hit those totals, or he's better than Lawrence or Hurts. But it's insane that he's doing this as the last pick of the draft, and most of those numbers were accumulated a rookie. He's played like a top 10 QB since he took over, including the playoffs. I mean shit, his best game was in the playoffs, against the rival Seahawks no less.

EDIT: Had to fix a couple numbers

I'm convinced he's the real deal now. You watch these games, this isn't some guy that's simply being protected/sheltered and not losing games. He's making legit throws, he's smart with the ball, he's accurate and most importantly, they trust him to make plays when needed. He looks like that rare absolute gem found in the late rounds...as "Mr. Irrelevant," no less.
